Chapter 10: Making a Scene
The street office staff looked at Song Yue with a serious expression, ready to reprimand her. “Comrade, your behavior is very—”
A colleague beside him suddenly interrupted, “Song Tiezi?”
“Who’s looking for Song Tiezi? He was here just yesterday, right before sunset. He came with his father and mother.”
Hearing that “the whole family” had been here the night before, an ominous feeling crept up in Song Yue’s heart.
She turned to the staff member who had spoken and asked, “Did they come to sign me up for the countryside relocation?”
The staff member was momentarily stunned and then looked at Song Yue. “Comrade, how did you know?”
So it was true!
One plan failed, and they immediately came up with another!
That family really was something!
Song Yue pressed her lips together. “I’m Song Yue.”
The staff handling her registration: “!”
The staff who had misspoken: “!”
One glance at Song Yue’s expression, and the staff could tell she hadn’t known about this at all.
Fearing that she would make a scene, he quickly tried to persuade her with a patient tone. “Comrade, once the registration is confirmed, it can’t be changed. You—”
Song Yue smiled and cut him off. “Don’t worry, Comrade. I’m not changing it.”
“Can you tell me where I’m going? When do I leave? And how much is the resettlement fee?”
The staff was taken aback for a moment before answering her questions one by one. “Comrade Song, you’re being sent to the northwest. The train leaves in five days.”
“The resettlement fee for Hei Province is one hundred yuan, but for the northwest, it’s two hundred.”
Song Yue asked, “Can I switch to Hei Province? I’ll refund a hundred yuan.”
“That…” The staff hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. “No, you can’t switch.”
Song Yue remained silent, simply looking at him.
The staff had a bad feeling, already bracing himself for her to throw a tantrum—rolling on the floor, crying, and making a scene.
After all…
That kind of thing happened a lot.
What they hadn’t expected was that nothing of the sort happened.
The young woman in front of them remained extremely calm, nodding in acknowledgment and even thanking them.
“Alright.”
“Thank you.”
“Sorry for the trouble.”
After saying that, Song Yue turned and left.
For the first time, the staff witnessed such a reaction. Especially seeing how composed she was, something felt… off.
The staff member who had misspoken stared at her departing figure and muttered, “Comrade Song is kind of… eerie.”
The one who had handled her registration shivered. “A little.”
…
Not long after Song Yue left, a young man pushing a bicycle entered the office.
He parked his bike in the corner before striding toward the staff.
The staff greeted him with a smile. “Hello, Comrade. How can I help—”
Before he could finish, the young man pulled out an ID badge from his pocket. “Comrade, I need to see your director.”
The staff’s face changed instantly when he saw the badge. He straightened his posture and said solemnly, “Comrade, please follow me.”
He led the young man to the door of a small office, knocked first, then pushed it open.
“Director Liu, this comrade is here to see you.”
Before Director Liu could even speak, the young man strode inside and flashed his ID.
“Director Liu, hello. This is my work badge.”
The moment Director Liu saw the badge, his expression shifted dramatically. He immediately reached out for a handshake.
“Comrade Liu, hello, hello.”
He then shot a meaningful glance at the staff by the door.
The staff understood and closed the door behind them.
Comrade Liu sat down and got straight to the point. “I’m here today to inquire about reports of women in your jurisdiction being trafficked to Shan Province…”
Trafficking?
Director Liu’s eyes widened to the size of copper bells. “!”
…
After leaving the street office, Song Yue found the nearest bus stop and took a ride to her high school classmate Yang Duo’s house.
Back in school, the original owner of this body had been closest to Yang Duo, who often shared good things with her.
Yang Duo was a premature baby and had always been in poor health. The original owner took care of her a lot.
Over time, they became inseparable. Whenever the original owner suffered grievances at home, she would come to Yang Duo’s house and had even stayed over a few times.
Yang Duo’s parents knew about her situation and treated her well.
Today, Song Yue came to see Yang Duo for one reason—she wanted to sell her job to her.
Yang Duo was an only child. Both her parents were still employed and had not yet reached retirement age.
Since Yang Duo’s health wasn’t bad enough to be exempt from the countryside relocation, she was also on the list.
Her parents, unwilling to let her go, had been delaying the process while secretly pulling every string they could to find her a job.
But jobs were scarce, competition was fierce, and prices were soaring.
From the original owner’s memory, Song Yue knew that before she had been sold off, Yang Duo still hadn’t managed to secure a job.
She was here to check if Yang Duo’s job situation had been resolved.
If not, she would sell hers to her.
As for her scumbag brother?
Not a chance!
With that thought, Song Yue had already arrived at Yang Duo’s doorstep.
She raised her hand and knocked. “Knock, knock.”
A moment later, Yang Duo’s voice came from inside.
“Who is it?”
