Chapter 411 – Are You Satisfied Now?
Jiang Hong noticed his wife suddenly fall silent again. He quickly turned his head, and upon realizing the reason, his expression turned serious as he looked at Hong Shuo, who was watching the drama unfold.
“It’s late, you must be tired. Go back and rest. Whatever it is, we’ll talk tomorrow.”
Hong Shuo looked at the couple and grinned like a fool. “I’m not tired. You guys go ahead, just pretend I’m not even here.”
Hearing that, Jiang Hong’s face darkened with anger. He raised his left foot, clearly intending to kick him, but before he could land it, Hong Shuo dodged out of the way.
“I knew you were gonna kick me. Fine, I won’t get in your way anymore. I’ll head back to my room. You two have a nice chat.” With that, he turned and walked toward another room up ahead, smiling as he went.
Only after he’d gone did Jiang Hong turn back around, grab his wife’s hand, and stride quickly out of the educated youth compound.
It was pitch black outside. As soon as Li Yiyi stepped out, all she saw was darkness. Instinctively, her legs followed the man in front of her.
Before she could adjust to the night, she suddenly bumped into something solid, like a steel wall. Her nose crashed into his back, and she immediately felt like it had been flattened.
Jiang Hong, walking ahead, heard a soft yelp of pain behind him. He instantly realized something had bumped into his back. When he connected the dots with that pained yelp, he quickly understood what had happened.
Worried, he turned around and held her shoulders. “What happened? Did it hurt? Where did you bump yourself? Let me see.”
It was too dark around them. She could only hear his voice but couldn’t see his face at all.
Seeing the situation, Li Yiyi quickly said, “Wait a second, let me get the flashlight I brought.”
As soon as she said that, she secretly pulled a flashlight from her space supermarket and turned it on. With a beam of light, they could finally see each other’s faces clearly.
Jiang Hong looked at her with concern. “Where did you hurt yourself? Let me take a look.”
Li Yiyi pointed at the tip of her nose, both amused and exasperated. “Here. You suddenly stopped without a word—my nose is practically squashed.”
Under the light, Jiang Hong saw that her nose was indeed a little red.
“I’ll make it stop hurting,” he said.
Li Yiyi looked at him curiously. “How?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, her vision went dark for a second—and the next thing she felt was something soft and warm lightly tapping her nose.
She quickly raised the flashlight and shone it at him, catching him with a mischievous grin that looked like he’d just gotten away with something naughty.
“Well? Does it still hurt?” he asked softly by her ear.
Li Yiyi chuckled, lifted her hand, and gave his chest a light pat. “Pervert.”
Jiang Hong let out a low laugh and lifted her hand to his lips, giving it a gentle kiss. “I’m only a pervert in front of my wife.”
His words made her blush. She quickly patted her cheeks with both hands and changed the subject. “Alright, enough of that—let’s get serious. Have you eaten yet?”
“I have. We caught some wild game up in the mountains and roasted it to fill our stomachs. But what about you guys? I heard from Old Hong that there’s something wrong with the water in this village?”
Li Yiyi nodded lightly. “Yeah. The water here contains some kind of nematode. I’ve never seen this kind before.”
Jiang Hong pressed his lips together. “Then how about this—we leave early tomorrow morning. When we get back, we’ll report the situation here to the higher-ups and see how they want to handle it.”
Li Yiyi tugged on his hand. “But I already promised to hold a free clinic for the villagers tomorrow. Let’s stay just one more day, okay? We’ll leave after the clinic.”
Jiang Hong paused, pursed his lips again, then nodded gently after a few seconds of thought. “Alright. We’ll do it your way.”
Li Yiyi happily threw her arms around him. “Thank you, Comrade Jiang Hong.”
He hugged her back and kissed the top of her head with a smile. “As long as it’s something you want to do, I’ll support you.”
The young couple stayed out under the night sky for nearly half an hour before returning to their rooms.
Jiang Hong walked her to the door of her room, clearly reluctant to part. Even though they were husband and wife, they had to sleep separately tonight—an arrangement that felt unbearably frustrating.
“You should head back. I’m going in,” Li Yiyi said with a laugh, seeing that he was still lingering at the door.
Jiang Hong nodded, but despite the agreement, his legs showed no sign of moving.
“Come on, don’t be like this. Go back to your own room—we have to get up early tomorrow,” Li Yiyi said, gently pushing him in the direction of his room.
Looking at his heartless little wife, Jiang Hong sighed, then took her hand and walked her back to the door again. “Alright, go in. I’ll head back once I see you go inside.”
So Li Yiyi stepped in and immediately closed the door behind her. But she stayed just inside, listening carefully for sounds outside. Only when she heard his footsteps gradually fading into the distance did she finally feel at ease and return to her mat to lie down.
Despite everything going on in the village, she slept quite well that night.
When she woke up the next morning, daylight had already filled the sky. The researchers had begun bustling about, preparing breakfast.
As she stepped outside, the smell of vegetable porridge drifted into her nose.
“Yiyi, you’re up! Come have breakfast. Captain Jiang made us wild vegetable porridge today—it’s amazing! I didn’t know it could taste this good,” Gu Weiwei called out, holding her bowl and waving from a distance.
Hong Shuo, who was helping Jiang Hong cook, heard his girlfriend praising another man and felt a little sour. He nudged Jiang Hong and muttered, “Old Jiang, you’ve got to teach me how to cook porridge like this. You hear me?”
Jiang Hong was about to reply when he glanced over and saw Comrade Gu enthusiastically promoting the porridge to his wife. In that moment, everything clicked.
“Trying to win your girl over, huh? Sure, I could teach you… but first, call me ‘Master’ and let me hear it!” he said smugly.
Hong Shuo gritted his teeth at the demand, then looked over at his girlfriend, happily sipping porridge nearby. After hesitating for a second, he finally muttered, “Master… Are you satisfied now?”
