Chapter 418 – About to Float Away
After basking in his own pride, Jiang Zhanpeng quickly recounted every detail he knew without leaving a single thing out.
Once he finished, he looked seriously at Li Yiyi and said, “Mom, I’m sure that man is a bad guy. Think about it—he didn’t ask just anyone, he specifically sought out the kids from our military family compound to get information about the pharmaceutical factory. Why? Because the compound has the most military wives working over there. It’s the easiest place to get information. Doesn’t that make sense?”
Li Yiyi pressed her lips together and gave him a big thumbs-up. “Not bad. I didn’t expect my young son to have such strong awareness when it comes to dealing with bad people. You really take after me and your dad.”
Hearing his mother’s praise, Jiang Zhanpeng immediately puffed up his little chest. “Of course! My dad is a regimental commander, and my mom is a skilled doctor who’s even fought bad guys before! I’m your son, so I’ve got to be just as awesome.”
“Alright, alright, Mom compliments you once and now you’re about to float away,” Jiang Yueyue said with an exasperated look as she reminded her overly smug little brother. “Hurry up and eat. If you don’t, you’ll be late for school.”
Jiang Zhanpeng was still grinning smugly when his sister’s reminder suddenly froze the smile on his face. A second later, he let out a yelp and immediately started wolfing down the untouched breakfast in front of him.
Seeing how frantically he was eating, the three elders couldn’t help but feel distressed and tried to stop him with concern.
“Aiyo, my dear grandson, don’t eat so fast! You’ll choke—slow down,” Jiang’s mother said, her voice full of worry.
“She’s right, slow down. Here, drink some soy milk,” Auntie Huang added.
Li Yiyi and Jiang Hong exchanged a glance and chuckled, shaking their heads.
That breakfast ended with Jiang Zhanpeng racing the clock, mouth full of food the whole time.
After breakfast, Li Yiyi didn’t rush off to the hospital right away. Instead, she stopped Jiang Hong, who was about to head off to the unit.
“I want to check out that so-called ‘bad guy’ our son mentioned. Think you can make that happen?” she asked, tugging at his arm.
Jiang Hong took her hand and wrapped it in his large palm. “You suspect that man had ulterior motives in approaching the kids in our compound?”
Li Yiyi looked up at him. “Don’t you?”
Their eyes met, and Jiang Hong gave a faint smile. “You’re right. I also suspect he’s up to no good. But now that he’s been caught, we should trust the public security comrades to uncover whatever he’s hiding.”
“But I don’t want to wait,” she said, gazing at him.
Seeing the pleading look in her eyes, Jiang Hong finally gave in. “Alright, I’ll go get the car. Let’s drive over and see what we can find out.”
Hearing his reply, Li Yiyi happily cupped his face and kissed him on both cheeks with a grin. “Thank you. That’s your reward.”
Jiang Hong touched the places she kissed, lowered his eyebrows slightly, and licked his lips. Then he wrapped a hand behind her head and leaned in, pressing his lips to hers.
His warm breath brushed her ear as he whispered, “Now this is a real reward, wife. Next time you want to give me one, just do it like that, and I’ll be satisfied.”
Snapping back to her senses, Li Yiyi’s face turned red. She pushed him away a little and said, “Let’s go! No more talking,” before striding out ahead.
Jiang Hong stood in place, watching his shy wife scurry off. With a smile tugging at his lips, he quickly followed.
He drove the car over from the district and picked up his wife, who was waiting at the gate, and together they headed toward the city police station.
They arrived just as the officers there were starting their day.
A military green vehicle parked right at the entrance of the office building naturally drew some attention.
Soon, someone recognized the couple stepping out of the car.
“Old Jiang, what brings you here? No training today?” A large hand clapped Jiang Hong’s shoulder the moment he got out.
Jiang Hong looked at the man who’d grabbed him from behind and brushed his hand off with a scowl. “Obviously I’ve got business here. And stop hanging all over me, my wife’s watching.”
Zhonghe snorted and said, half annoyed and half amused, “Acting like only you have a wife. I’ve got one too, alright? Besides, your wife’s not even here—what, does she have eyes a thousand miles wide?”
As soon as the words left his mouth, he saw Jiang Hong, who’d been staring at him, suddenly shift his gaze toward the other side of the car.
A bad feeling hit Zhonghe. He followed Jiang Hong’s gaze—and sure enough, a woman was stepping out from the other side of the car.
“…And she is?” Zhonghe asked in a lowered voice.
“My wife,” Jiang Hong answered proudly.
Zhonghe’s smile almost froze on his face. He quickly reviewed what he’d just said, hoping he hadn’t offended her.
“Sister-in-law, hello! I’m Zhonghe. I met Old Jiang during a joint mission a while back,” he quickly introduced himself with a grin.
Li Yiyi smiled and greeted him, “Hello, Comrade Zhong. I’m Li Yiyi, Jiang Hong’s wife.”
“I know, I know! Didn’t expect you to look so young, Sister-in-law. Honestly, if you two walked down the street together, I’d probably mistake you for his daughter. You look like a father-daughter pair!”
Yep—he said that on purpose. Who told Old Jiang not to give him a heads-up that his wife was coming too? He’d nearly put his foot in his mouth.
Jiang Hong kicked him in the leg and said, “Do you even know how to talk? I’m still pretty young, okay? If your eyesight’s that bad, go get a new pair of glasses.”
“My eyesight’s just fine! Look at you—you’re so dark! Doesn’t that make you look older?” Zhonghe pointed at Jiang Hong’s tanned face.
Jiang Hong touched his cheek and scoffed, “What do you know? My wife says this is a healthy tan. You just don’t get it.”
At that moment, he felt a light tug on the hem of his shirt. Looking down, he saw it was his wife.
Only then did he remember the real reason they were here today.
“Enough joking. We came here today to ask a favor,” he said seriously. “We heard you guys caught a man near our military district the other day. Do you know where he’s being held?”
Zhonghe thought for a moment and quickly recalled the incident. He’d been the one to arrest the guy.
That day, he was on duty at the station when the call came in. He drove over—and by the time he got there, the man had already been captured by a group of half-grown kids.
