Chapter 42: A Nightmare

“Li Yiyi, what are you so proud of? I’ll tell you, you won’t be able to gloat for long. You’re going to get Jiang Hong into trouble. Just wait.” After saying this, she glanced at Jiang Hong and then walked away with her chest held high and a smug look on her face.

At that moment, Li Yiyi didn’t even notice her departure because her mind was consumed with the words Yang Tao had said just before leaving!

Her difficult days! Thinking that Yang Tao was a reborn person who must know what will happen in the future, Li Yiyi couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was somehow related to Jiang Hong, especially after Yang Tao had glanced over toward him when she left. For some reason, she couldn’t help but feel that it had something to do with him.

“What’s wrong? Why do you look so pale? Are you feeling unwell?” Jiang Hong walked up to her, noticing her bad complexion and asked in concern.

Li Yiyi raised her head and looked at him. “Jiang Hong, do you believe that someone could know what’s going to happen in the future?”

Jiang Hong chuckled and gently touched her forehead. “You’re not even running a fever, so why are you saying such nonsense?”

Seeing the smile on his face, Li Yiyi realized that what she had just asked must have sounded impossible to him.

She pushed his hand away and immediately broke into a smile. “I’m fine. Let’s continue making dumplings.” She turned toward the children who had just stood up for her and called out to them.

After a busy day, Li Yiyi managed to get the two children, who had been playing for hours, to sleep. She sat on the bed, still thinking about the words Yang Tao had said earlier.

Yang Tao was reborn and must know what happened in her past life. Thinking about her certainty when she said it, Li Yiyi speculated that something would definitely happen when Jiang Hong returned to his team.

The thought of him being in danger made her uneasy, and her mind kept returning to this matter uncontrollably.

When Jiang Hong returned to the room, he found Li Yiyi sitting on the bed, staring blankly. She seemed lost in thought and didn’t respond even when he called her a few times.

“Wife, what’s wrong? You’ve been so distracted all day. Did something happen?” Seeing her quiet and distant expression, Jiang Hong walked over with concern and sat next to her, gently holding her hand.

Li Yiyi snapped back to reality and, seeing him sitting in front of her with a concerned look, forced a smile and greeted him, “You’re back. Did you send Jian and the others back?”

Jiang Hong continued to hold her hand gently. “Yes, I sent them back. Mom also wanted me to thank you for sending them the dumplings.” After a pause, he continued, “What were you thinking just now? You looked so absent-minded.”

Li Yiyi hesitated, then replied, “I was thinking about what Yang Tao said before she left. She said I would get you into trouble.”

Jiang Hong realized that her distracted demeanor was due to these words. His heart ached, but he sighed and tightly gripped her hand. “She’s just a madwoman. Why would you believe what a crazy person says? How could you get me into trouble? You’re only here to help me.” He said this as he gently pulled her into his arms.

Li Yiyi leaned into his embrace and continued, “It’s better to believe it might be true than to not believe it at all.” She suddenly pulled away from him and, with a serious expression, grabbed his arm. “Promise me, when you return to your team, take care of yourself.”

Jiang Hong originally wanted to reassure her and tell her not to worry, but when he saw the genuine concern in her eyes, he swallowed the words and simply nodded. “Alright, I promise I’ll take care of myself. Don’t worry so much.” He lowered his head and kissed her forehead before pulling her back into his embrace.

That night, Li Yiyi couldn’t sleep peacefully. She dreamed that after Jiang Hong returned to the team and went on a mission, he was severely injured. In the end, the injuries were too much, and he didn’t survive!

She woke up from the dream, gasping for breath, her heart pounding as if half of her life had been taken in the dream.

Her movements soon woke Jiang Hong, who had been holding her in his sleep.

He opened his eyes, hearing her breathing was off. He quickly lit the oil lamp and brought it to the bedside, his face full of concern as he helped her sit up. “Did you have a nightmare?”

Li Yiyi, seeing the man right in front of her, immediately thought of his bloodied appearance in the dream. She felt a pang in her heart and, without thinking, threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly.

Her sudden action caught Jiang Hong off guard for a moment, but soon he came to his senses and returned the hug. Gently patting her back, he spoke in the softest tone, “It’s okay. I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”

Hearing his hoarse voice, Li Yiyi softly told him, “You must be careful. You can’t get hurt. The kids and I need you.”

Jiang Hong froze for a moment, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. After a pause, he promised, “Okay, I promise. I’ll be fine.”

That night, the couple stayed tightly in each other’s arms, while the two children in the corner of the bed seemed almost forgotten.

Due to the nightmare the previous night, Li Yiyi woke up early the next day, feeling as if she had no strength in her body.

To shake off the feeling, she took the two children for a walk around the village after breakfast, hoping to find out what had happened with the incident from the previous day.

When they reached the village’s fields, Li Yiyi noticed that there were hardly any villagers working in the fields.

At that moment, she ran into Jiang Da’s wife, who was heading to the fields.

“Big sister, why isn’t anyone working today? Why are the fields so empty?” she asked, pointing at the vast empty fields.

Jiang Da’s wife chuckled. “How could we ever not work? The villagers didn’t come today because they all went to the open area in the village to watch the fight.” She lowered her voice as she continued, “It’s a big event.”

Li Yiyi’s face immediately darkened. After all this time, she had almost forgotten the darker side of this era.

“Sister-in-law, are you alright? You look pale. Are you feeling unwell? Should I take you to see Uncle San?” Jiang Da’s wife noticed Li Yiyi’s expression and asked with concern.

Li Yiyi snapped out of her thoughts and gently shook her head. “I’m fine, Sister-in-law. I just want to go and take a look over there. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Be careful. The villagers can get a little crazy when they’re fighting. Don’t get too close, or you and the kids might get hurt.” Jiang Da’s wife warned her again.

Li Yiyi nodded. “I understand. Thank you, Sister-in-law.”

After parting ways with Jiang Da’s wife, Li Yiyi, with a heavy heart, led the two children toward the large open area in the village.
