Chapter 420: Being Scared Just Won’t Do
Li Yiyi glanced at the address on the slip of paper with a smile, her curiosity about the place growing.
After leaving the director’s office, she headed straight back to the Traditional Chinese Medicine department.
When He Wenyin and the other two saw her return, they warmly gathered around her.
“Dr. Li, you’re not heading out again, right? When you’re not around, we feel totally unconfident diagnosing patients,” He Wenyin said with a pitiful look on her face.
Hearing that, Li Yiyi reached out and flicked her forehead lightly. “What are you saying? How can you think like that? The three of you were personally trained by me—I know exactly what you’re capable of. You’ve all learned really well. Even if I’m not here to supervise you, I believe you’ll only go further.”
As soon as she said this, Zhang Xinsheng suddenly frowned. “Sis, why does it sound like you’re saying goodbye forever? You’re not planning to quit, are you?”
The moment those words left his mouth, Ji Jun and He Wenyin both looked at her nervously.
Li Yiyi glanced at their faces, hesitated, then decided to tell them the truth. “I’m not exactly quitting—just transferring to another workplace. But I’ll still come back to visit when I have time. And if you run into anything, you can always contact me.”
“So you really are leaving…” He Wenyin clung to her arm, reluctant. “Dr. Li, can’t you just stay? If you leave, I—I’m scared I won’t be able to handle it alone…”
Li Yiyi patted the back of her hand gently to comfort her. “Silly girl. Didn’t I just say it? I’m just changing workplaces. I’ll still come back often. I’m still a doctor at this hospital.”
At that, Ji Jun pushed up his glasses and said seriously, “Don’t worry, Dr. Li. We won’t let you down. We’ll do a good job here and carry forward our TCM legacy.”
Looking at the composed Ji Jun, Li Yiyi smiled. “Good. With your promise, I’m at ease.”
“Sis, where are you going to work?” Zhang Xinsheng asked.
Li Yiyi paused, then replied, “I can’t tell you. But I’ll still be in this city.”
Zhang Xinsheng immediately understood—whatever job his sister was taking on must be classified.
Before leaving, Li Yiyi checked their recent studies. She was satisfied—they hadn’t slacked off just because she wasn’t around.
After this check-in, she could finally leave with peace of mind.
The next day, Li Yiyi declined Jiang Hong’s offer to drive her and rode her bike alone to the address written on the slip.
She had to admit—the place was definitely hard to find. It turned out to be a pig farm at the foot of a mountain.
She searched the area for quite a while before finally locating it.
When she arrived, she saw the front gate of the pig farm, which looked like it hadn’t been maintained in years.
Just as she was hesitating about whether to gently knock, the dilapidated wooden door creaked open from the inside, and an elderly man—probably in his fifties or sixties—stepped out.
“What are you sneaking around here for?” the old man asked gruffly, glaring at her.
Li Yiyi tried to peek inside, but the old man quickly shut the door again, clearly not wanting her to see what was inside.
Seeing that, she retracted her curious gaze and smiled, introducing herself. “Hello, sir. My name is Li Yiyi. I’m here to report in.”
“Report in? This is just a pig farm—and an abandoned one at that. What are you even reporting for? Wherever you came from, go back,” the old man said with suspicion in his eyes as he looked her up and down.
Li Yiyi froze for a moment, wondering if she’d gotten the place wrong. She quickly pulled out the slip of paper Director Cheng had given her yesterday and double-checked the address. It was definitely correct.
But why would the old man say that?
“Wait a minute—where did you get that piece of paper?” the old man suddenly asked, eyes wide as he pointed at the slip in her hand.
Seeing his reaction, Li Yiyi handed the paper over and replied, “Oh, this? My supervisor gave it to me. He told me to report here. But this place… it looks kind of run-down, so I figured it might not be the right one.”
After all, this place looked nothing like a research institute.
Just as she turned to leave, the old man suddenly shouted, “You little brat! What do you mean this place looks run-down? And look at the address—see the number on the gate? Isn’t it the same? How could you possibly be in the wrong place?”
Li Yiyi looked where he pointed, and sure enough, the number matched the one on her paper.
“Huh, you’re right. But sir, didn’t you just tell me I was in the wrong place?” she asked with a smile.
The old man’s expression turned a little awkward. He fumbled for an explanation. “That was then, this is now. If you’d shown me the paper earlier, we wouldn’t have had this misunderstanding, would we?”
Li Yiyi almost laughed. Alright, fine—she’d let it slide since he was an old man.
“So, uncle, am I in the right place or not? Give me a clear answer,” she interrupted him, still smiling.
The old man cleared his throat, then pushed the creaky door fully open. “Yes, you’re in the right place. Come in. I didn’t expect a young woman like you to end up working here. Impressive—really proves you can’t judge a book by its cover.”
He walked ahead of her, muttering as he went.
Li Yiyi followed behind, listening and chuckling to herself. But soon, she had no time to laugh.
Because she realized she’d been completely wrong about this place. What looked like a rundown pig farm on the outside actually concealed something extraordinary inside. Once she entered the backyard, the scene changed entirely—it was a completely different world.
“Well? Still think this place is run-down?” the old man asked, smugly turning to see the shock in her eyes. “Let me tell you something—don’t rely only on your eyes. You have to use your heart, too. Understand? You young people are just too impatient.”
