Chapter 45: I Will Feel Heartache

“Yes, I won’t do anything reckless. I just want to say a few words to my daughter,” Li mother hurriedly assured as soon as she heard.

Jiang Hong cast a cold, appraising glance at Li mother, who was flattering him, then turned his gaze tenderly to Li Yiyi. “Be careful, don’t stand there foolishly and let someone hit you. You don’t feel pain, but I feel heartache watching you.”

Li Yiyi smiled slightly, surprised that this man, who usually kept to himself, suddenly expressed concern in such a way that it warmed her heart.

“I got it. Go on and handle your business.” With a bashful feeling, she pushed him towards another direction.

Li mother, watching the sweet and affectionate interaction between the young couple, couldn’t help but curl her lips in displeasure. When she noticed her daughter turning her head toward her, Li mother quickly adjusted her expression, forcing a smile back onto her face.

“Just say what you want to say!” Li Yiyi walked over, noticing the strange smile on her mother’s face, and quickly looked away.

Li mother rubbed her hands together nervously, oblivious to her daughter’s strange attitude. “You little brat, why didn’t you tell us you went to the county town to take the medical qualification exam? If your little brother hadn’t gone to check the results for someone, we wouldn’t have even known about it.”

Upon hearing this, Li Yiyi immediately fixed her gaze on her mother and asked seriously, “What are you trying to do?”

Li mother began to act pitiful. “You little brat, our family’s only hope right now is your little brother. His school is constantly holding sports events, and there are no teachers giving lessons. Your brother said that soon, the school might not even be open anymore. I’m worried about where he’s going to work when he comes back.”

“So you want me to give up this opportunity for him, don’t you?” Li Yiyi interrupted before Li mother could finish.

Li mother froze for a moment, then wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “Your little brother is your own sibling. If he’s well, won’t you be well too? You’re a woman; you should stay at home and take care of your husband. Don’t let those little fox spirits steal him away. As for the job you passed, just give it to your brother. He’ll take good care of you in the future.”

“Do you really think I’m still that naive? He’s going to take care of me? Don’t try to fool me. My answer is clear: I’m not giving it to him. If I pass, that opportunity is mine, and I’m not giving it to anyone.” Li Yiyi said with a cold smile.

Li mother’s false pretenses immediately shattered, and her expression twisted into something ugly. She shouted, “How dare you?” Then she remembered that this wasn’t her house but the Jiang family’s house.

Recalling the stern demeanor of her son-in-law, Li mother quickly looked around, making sure he didn’t hear, before lowering her voice and saying, “You little brat, do you want to rebel? You won’t even listen to me, your mother? I’m telling you, you’re going to give that opportunity to your brother, whether you like it or not. Got it?”

Li Yiyi sneered, “Do you not have ears, or are you deaf? I just said it clearly, that opportunity is mine, and I’m not giving it to anyone.”

Li mother’s face turned green with anger, trembling as she raised her hand to strike her.

Li Yiyi coldly grabbed her wrist. “What’s this? When you can’t persuade someone, you resort to violence?” She gave a mocking smile.

Li mother froze when she saw the mocking smile on her daughter’s face and murmured, “Who exactly are you? You’re not my daughter, are you?”

Hearing this, Li Yiyi paused for a moment, then laughed. “That’s right. I’m not your daughter. Your daughter starved to death long ago. The person standing here now is someone who’s died once. I’ve seen through all of you. I won’t be stupid enough to hand over anything to you anymore.”

Li mother had only been guessing aimlessly, but she never expected what Li Yiyi had just said to be true. She didn’t know that the daughter standing before her was not the one she had known. The current Li Yiyi was a soul from another world.

“Impossible, you little brat, don’t scare me. I was just talking in anger. How could I not recognize my own daughter?” Li mother quickly responded with a nervous laugh.

Li Yiyi looked at the flattering smile on her mother’s face, sneered, and pulled her hand away. “Mom, I’ve always wanted to ask you something. Am I really your daughter?”

Li mother flashed a moment of panic. “What are you talking about? Of course, you’re my daughter. I carried you for ten months and gave birth to you.”

“Is that so? But it doesn’t feel like it.” She touched her chin, her eyes secretly watching her mother’s reaction.

Li mother froze for a moment, and when she raised her head, she realized she had just exposed something. There was an eerie look on her face that Li Yiyi did not miss.

It seemed the original Li Yiyi had another layer to her background, but whether it was good or bad, Li Yiyi couldn’t yet tell.

Li mother turned around hurriedly, “It’s getting late, your father and the others are waiting for me. Think about the opportunity carefully.” With that, she hurriedly left in a fluster, leaving the house in a rush.

Li Yiyi narrowed her eyes and watched her mother flee, silent for a moment.

“Come out, they’re gone. Stop hiding and spying.” At that moment, she suddenly called out to the quiet courtyard.

Not long after, Jiang Hong slowly walked out from a corner in the distance.

“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. I just wanted to stay nearby to protect you,” Jiang Hong explained awkwardly.

Li Yiyi smiled and linked her arm with his, looking up at him in a soft, affectionate manner. “I know, and I’m not angry that you listened in. Also, I’m really happy about what you said to my mom. Keep it up.”

“Okay, okay.” Seeing her charming and lively appearance, Jiang Hong seemed at a loss for words.

“By the way, is today the day the exam results are announced? After we have breakfast, let’s go to the city to check the results.” Though she already had a feeling about it.

Jiang Hong replied without hesitation, “Yes, they’re announced today.”

“How are you so sure?” She was surprised he answered so quickly, without even thinking.

“I’ve been keeping track. I planned to tell you when you woke up.” He answered a bit bashfully.

Li Yiyi smiled, “Thanks, but I probably already know my results. My mom came today to get me to give the spot to my good little brother, which means I must have passed.”

“I knew you’d do well.” He gazed lovingly at her smile.

After breakfast, the young couple tidied up, dropped off the two kids at Old Jiang’s house, and then rode a bike together to the city.

This time, her bottom wouldn’t suffer the same fate.
