Chapter 465: So it was You Behind This?
Upon hearing her words, the man finally showed a satisfied expression. He quickly turned and entered the room to relay the message for them.
As soon as he entered, Jiang Huijing began to feel sorry for the five yuan she had just given away.
“Who are these people? They only need to deliver a message, yet they asked for five yuan! This is too greedy!” Jiang Huijing complained.
Li Yiyi interrupted her, “We are the ones asking for their help, so giving them a little money isn’t unreasonable.”
“Still, five yuan is too much, way too much.”
Li Yiyi didn’t respond to her, and instead took a few steps forward.
At first, Li Yiyi thought they would be shut out when they arrived, but when the gatekeeper returned and told them that their boss wanted to see them, she was a little surprised.
Once inside, she finally understood why they had been able to arrange a meeting with the boss so quickly.
“So it was you behind this?” Upon seeing the man sitting on the luxurious sofa in the hall, Li Yiyi was suddenly struck with confusion.
It seemed that the reason Wang Fugui and his wife had gotten the job wasn’t just luck, but that someone had set up this trap for them from the start.
Huo Wujian, noticing that she recognized him, stood up from the sofa with a proud smile. “I didn’t expect Comrade Li to still remember me. It seems I’m truly fortunate,” he said, smiling smugly.
Li Yiyi frowned at his words. “I didn’t expect you to be so devious, setting up such a malicious plot against this couple so early on. How despicable.”
“Well said. I’ll take that as a compliment, Comrade Li,” Huo Wujian replied nonchalantly, grinning widely.
Seeing his smug expression, Li Yiyi was furious, almost wanting to strike him.
“Was Wang Fugui’s situation part of your planned trap?” With his appearance, Li Yiyi couldn’t help but suspect that everything surrounding Wang Fugui and his wife had been part of a plot they had set up.
Huo Wujian burst out laughing, “Comrade Li, you think too highly of us. Wang Fugui and his wife are just insignificant people. They aren’t worth my time. It’s just bad luck for them that they thought about stealing. I was just using the situation to my advantage; this isn’t really my business.”
“Do you think I’ll believe you just because you say so? What are you really after?” Li Yiyi couldn’t hide her impatience as she glared at him.
At that moment, Huo Wujian seemed to realize her irritation, and stopped smiling, his tone turning more serious. “It’s simple. If you want to save your brother-in-law, you’ll have to hand over one of your medical formulas. I’ve heard that you have quite a few of them. Just give me one that’s not too much trouble for you.”
Hearing his demand, Li Yiyi sneered coldly. “So all of this was for one of my formulas.”
Huo Wujian immediately defended himself, “Comrade Li, you’re wrongfully accusing me. I only wanted a pill from you for research, but now, with such a good bargaining chip, I would be foolish not to use it.”
Li Yiyi stared coldly at him. “I can’t give you an answer right now. I need a few days to think about it.”
“Fine, take your time. I’m not in a rush, but I wonder if your brother-in-law is as calm as you are,” he said, laughing loudly.
Li Yiyi ignored his laughter, grabbed the now-nervous Jiang Huijing, and left.
Once outside the mansion, Jiang Huijing finally spoke, “Sister-in-law, why didn’t you agree to him? If you had, Fugui could have been released from the police station.”
Li Yiyi stopped and turned to look at her. “This mess was caused by you two. Why should I use my formulas to clean up after you? You really have some nerve.”
“Don’t follow me. Go back where you came from. I don’t want to be around you. Every time I’m with you, I feel like my intelligence is draining,” Li Yiyi snapped, then turned and got on the bus that had just arrived, leaving without looking back.
After having lunch with the elderly at the compound, Li Yiyi rode her bicycle back to the military family quarters.
When she returned home, she saw that Jiang’s parents were busy in the yard, sorting out the herbs they had dug up on the mountain that day.
She had been worried that Wang Fugui’s situation might affect Jiang’s parents, but seeing the smiles on their faces, she realized her worries had been unnecessary.
“Third Brother came by this morning. He said there’s an urgent mission and he’ll be away for a few days. He asked me to pass the message to you,” Jiang’s mother said as she saw her daughter-in-law returning.
Li Yiyi nodded. “I already heard about it from Huijing.”
When Jiang’s mother heard Huijing’s name, her smile faded slightly. “She came to see you?”
“Yes. Don’t worry, Mom. Fugui’s situation isn’t unsolvable,” Li Yiyi said, noticing her mother-in-law’s expression change.
Jiang’s mother calmly said, “If this is going to cause you and Third Brother any trouble, then don’t worry about it. Your father and I have let go of these things. We can’t let these two useless ones drag you and Third Brother down.”
Li Yiyi nodded, “Okay, I’ll handle it. Don’t worry, Mom. If it’s really something we can’t solve, neither Jiang Hong nor I will get involved.”
“Good. You and your father don’t need to worry about it anymore. We’re just focused on making money for our retirement,” Jiang’s mother said, looking down at the fresh herbs in front of her, her smile returning.
“Yes, it’s surprising that we can still make money at our age. I don’t feel any hardship doing this every day,” Aunt Huang added happily.
Seeing the vitality radiating from the three elderly people, Li Yiyi genuinely felt happy for them.
The next day, Li Yiyi took the parchment she had obtained to the stock research society.
As soon as she walked in, she noticed the excited looks in everyone’s eyes as they saw her.
It wasn’t until she ran into Ito Jing that she realized why they were reacting this way.
