Chapter 478: Not Long for This World!
Jiang Hong smiled and replied, “Wife, don’t tell me you weren’t shocked when you heard this?”
Li Yiyi thought for a moment about her own reaction when she first heard the news earlier that day. She had been shocked too, but not as badly as he was.
However, she couldn’t let him know that, or else he would end up teasing her.
“No, I was very calm. Who’s the one who got scared? You,” she shook her head and denied.
Jiang Hong stared at her face with suspicion for a moment. He felt like she was hiding something from him.
But he had no proof.
“Anyway, I was shocked. I never expected our quiet and demure daughter could find something like that. No wonder she’s my Jiang Hong’s daughter,” he laughed loudly.
Li Yiyi rolled her eyes at his proud expression. “She’s my daughter too. If I hadn’t given birth to her, do you think you would have such a good daughter?”
Hearing this, Jiang Hong laughed and hugged his wife, kissing her cheek. “Yes, yes, the one who deserves the most credit is my wife. Without you, how could I have such a good daughter?”
The couple spent most of the night bickering and laughing.
The next day, after having breakfast with the family, Li Yiyi rode her bicycle toward the research lab.
The old guard from before was still there, and when he saw her, he was happier than she was.
“Comrade Li, you’re finally back to work!” The old man exclaimed excitedly.
Li Yiyi greeted him. “Uncle Zhang, long time no see. How have you been?”
“I’m doing great! After taking the pills you gave me, I’ve been sleeping a lot better,” Uncle Zhang replied joyfully.
“That’s good to hear. I’ll go in now. We’ll talk more when I have time,” Li Yiyi said, waving.
“Okay, okay. The password’s the same as before,” Uncle Zhang reminded her as she walked past.
After going through several layers of strict security checks, Li Yiyi finally entered. Her former colleagues, seeing her return, were so happy they started dancing.
Seeing everyone so happy for her, Li Yiyi felt like she was truly coming home.
“Comrade Li, come to my office for a moment,” said Jiang Linglan suddenly, walking over.
Zhou Xin whispered to her, “They must be planning to reward you for the troubles you’ve gone through.”
Li Yiyi smiled but didn’t think that the reason Jiang Linglan was calling her to the office was because of that.
Sure enough, as soon as she entered the office and sat down, Jiang Linglan got straight to the point.
After hearing what she had to say, Li Yiyi nearly laughed out loud.
“No way, they’re that confident that the drug they developed is a life-extending elixir?” She laughed, holding her stomach.
“They say that after Tanaka Ichiro took the drug, he’s been full of energy, even worked through the night yesterday,” Jiang Linglan said with a cold smile.
“Is that true?” Li Yiyi immediately thought they might be lying.
“It’s true. We sent someone to check, and Tanaka Ichiro really does seem like a different person now. It’s hard to believe he was on the brink of death before,” Jiang Linglan frowned as she explained.
“So, they want me to double-check with you and see if their drug is really the one they say it is?”
Without hesitation, Li Yiyi replied, “Of course not. Director Yao, you don’t really believe there’s such a thing as a life-extending drug, do you?”
Jiang Linglan awkwardly smiled. “I used to never believe in such things, but after hearing about Tanaka Ichiro, he’s glowing and has more energy than young people now.”
Li Yiyi thought for a moment and then replied, “I’m not sure why he’s suddenly so different, but I can confidently say that the drug they developed is not some kind of life-extending elixir.”
“Do you think it could be a drug that brings people back to life?” Jiang Linglan suddenly clapped her hands in realization and asked in a low voice.
“Impossible. After being in medicine for so long, I’ve never heard of such a drug,” Li Yiyi shook her head firmly.
“Then what’s going on over there? How did they bring someone back from the brink of death?” Jiang Linglan continued to frown, puzzled.
Li Yiyi thought for a moment before sharing her suspicions. “The only explanation is that it’s a drug that temporarily revives the body’s last bit of energy. Once that’s used up, the person will die for sure.”
Jiang Linglan suddenly slapped her thigh. “Right! It must be like you said. It seems that Tanaka Ichiro won’t be around for much longer.”
“Can you tell how much longer he might last?” Jiang Linglan asked with interest.
“Anywhere from a few days to, at most, ten to fifteen days before he passes away,” Li Yiyi answered slowly.
“Well, looks like we’re lucky we didn’t switch to their drug. Otherwise, we’d have fallen for it,” Jiang Linglan sighed in relief.
Over the next few days, Li Yiyi was busy working with everyone.
On the third day after returning to work, Jiang Linglan came into her lab again.
“Comrade Li, quick, put down what you’re doing. The hospital just called. They need you to come back immediately,” she said casually.
Li Yiyi, seeing her calm demeanor, knew it couldn’t be anything too important, or Jiang Linglan wouldn’t be so relaxed.
After they stepped out, Li Yiyi asked curiously, “Director Yao, did the hospital say why I need to go back?”
“I know about this. It’s Tanaka Ichiro. He suddenly collapsed this morning during a meeting. He’s been sent to your hospital for emergency treatment. I’m guessing that’s why they called you back,” Jiang Linglan said, almost sounding like she was enjoying the situation.
Li Yiyi pursed her lips. It seemed her suspicions were right. Tanaka Ichiro had really gotten into trouble.
“And when you get there, be sure to call me with any firsthand news. I want to know as soon as possible,” Jiang Linglan said excitedly.
Li Yiyi smiled faintly and nodded, “Okay, I’ll make sure to let you know right away, Director Yao.”
“Great, great. Hurry over there. Don’t let it be your fault if something happens to him,” Jiang Linglan urged her.
