Chapter 488: Did I Do Something Wrong?

“Excuse me, are you Comrade Li Yiyi? Please come with us,” one of the men asked, his face serious as he addressed her by name.

“Yes, I am Li Yiyi. May I ask what I’ve done wrong?” Her intuition told her that these men were not ordinary people, but seemed to be some kind of officials sent to apprehend criminals.

The man who had spoken earlier maintained a stern expression and replied, “I cannot disclose the details at the moment, but we have orders from above to take you for an investigation.”

As soon as he finished speaking, two men dressed in the same uniform stepped up behind her and grabbed her by the arms.

Li Yiyi didn’t resist. She knew that no matter the reason for her being taken, she had nothing to fear, as she had done nothing wrong.

Just as they were about to leave with her, Director Yao rushed down from the upper floor, blocking their path with a worried expression.

“Who are you? Do you know where this is? What gives you the right to take my staff?” she fired off several questions in quick succession.

The man who had ordered her apprehension explained, “You must be Director Yao, right? My name is Lan, and I am the leader of the XX Special Investigation Group. We are here on orders from above to take Comrade Li Yiyi for questioning. If you have any doubts, feel free to call the relevant authorities. I believe they will give you a satisfactory answer.”

When Director Yao heard his position, her face changed slightly. Although the group was mysterious, her own position gave her some knowledge of it.

“Are you really from that group? You’re not lying to me, are you?” she asked, still somewhat skeptical despite her shock at their identities.

“I’ve already told you, Director Yao, if you have doubts, you can make a call to verify it. As for whether you want any useful information from me, I regret to inform you that I cannot provide that,” the man said, signaling to his subordinates.

Li Yiyi, grateful, turned to Director Yao and said, “Thank you, Director. But don’t worry, I won’t have any problems. If I’m delayed and can’t return soon, could you please let my family know? I’m worried they might get anxious.”

Director Yao, visibly concerned, nodded in agreement. “Don’t worry, I’ll arrange for someone to inform your family. And I’ll make sure to get to the bottom of this. I’ll clear your name.”

Li Yiyi smiled gently and nodded in response.

Before they could speak further, the men had already begun to escort her away.

On the way, Li Yiyi sat in the car with them. The men’s serious expressions made her feel a lot of pressure just sitting in the same vehicle with them. Although she wanted to ask where they were taking her, the stern looks on their faces made her decide against it. After all, whatever was coming would eventually come.

Half an hour later, the car stopped outside a large building. Li Yiyi had braced herself for rude treatment, but surprisingly, the men were polite, escorting her into the building.

Once inside, one of the men led her into a room with only a table and a chair, locking her in.

However, they were courteous enough to bring her a glass of water once she was inside.

For nearly an hour, she sat in the room, which felt more like an interrogation room, wondering if they had forgotten about her. But finally, the door opened, and a man and a woman walked in, each holding a notebook and sitting in front of her.

“Are you Li Yiyi?” the woman asked sternly.

Li Yiyi, using her intuition as a woman, could tell from the tone of the woman’s voice that she seemed quite dissatisfied with her. However, she didn’t recognize the woman’s face, and couldn’t understand why the woman seemed angry.

“Yes, I’m Li Yiyi. Since you’ve brought me here, can I ask what exactly I’ve done wrong? Don’t you think it’s only fair to let the accused know their crime?” Li Yiyi asked, frustrated after having been kept in the room for so long without any explanation.

“You don’t know what you’ve done wrong? Do you have no idea of your own actions?” the woman snapped, cutting her off.

Li Yiyi, now irritated, replied, “What do you mean? I have no idea what I’ve done wrong. I, Li Yiyi, have always been honest and upright, and never engaged in any shady business.”

“Hmph, what you’ve done is far worse than any petty crimes. You’ve committed treason against the country,” the woman said coldly.

Upon hearing this accusation, Li Yiyi, enraged, picked up the glass of water beside her and splashed it in the woman’s face.

“Ah! You dare throw water at me? Do you know who I am? I’ll make sure you regret this!” the woman shouted, her face drenched, glaring at Li Yiyi.

“I didn’t throw a chair at you, so consider yourself lucky. Now, clean up that filthy mouth of yours. I, Li Yiyi, have never committed any act of treason. I swear on my life, if you keep spewing nonsense, I’ll make you mute!” Li Yiyi shouted back, anger flaring in her eyes.

The woman, realizing that Li Yiyi was a doctor and could likely make good on her threat, hesitated and took a step back, a look of fear crossing her face.

At that moment, a man’s voice echoed, “Li Ling, step aside! If you don’t control that mouth of yours, you won’t be working here anymore.”

Hearing her superior’s warning, Li Ling, the woman, could only glare at Li Yiyi in silence and finally muttered, “Understood, Director.”

The man turned to Li Yiyi, apologizing, “Sorry, Comrade Li. This is Comrade Li Ling. I apologize for what she said earlier.”
