Chapter 110: Behave Well, This Is General He After All
Lu Yuanbao waited and waited, waited until his stomach was hungry and his legs started to go numb from sitting, but Chu Yue and Lu Zhanlin still didn’t get up. Instead, what showed up was Chen Fengying, rushing over in a hurry.
Last night when Jiang Nian left, she had asked Chen Fengying to take care of Lu Yuanbao.
Chen Fengying was a responsible and devoted person, close to Chu Yue, and since Lu Yuanbao was Lu Zhanlin’s son, no matter the reason, she cared about him deeply.
It was so cold last night, with wind and snow, yet Chen Fengying came to Chu Yue’s house twice to check on Lu Yuanbao.
Lu Yuanbao was lying under thick blankets, his little face flushed red as he slept soundly, not even turning over once. He was much better behaved than Chen Fengying’s own big strong son.
Seeing this, Chen Fengying relaxed, thinking that since Lu Yuanbao was sound asleep and unaware of anything, it was best to just let him rest.
She figured that since he stayed up late on New Year’s Eve, he would definitely sleep in and wouldn’t get up easily the next day. So she got up early, made breakfast at home, arranged some things, and then came back to check on Lu Yuanbao and wake him.
But no one expected that when Chen Fengying walked in, she saw Lu Yuanbao already dressed neatly and looking bright and lively, sitting on a small stool as if he had been awake for quite some time.
“Yuanbao, why are you up so early? You’re even dressed? Aren’t you cold?” Chen Fengying worriedly reached out to check his clothes, wondering if he was wearing warm sweaters underneath.
Lu Yuanbao was startled when Chen Fengying suddenly appeared, and before he could fully react, she tried to grab him, which made him frown nervously.
He took a step back, dodging her hand.
Chen Fengying quickly realized what was happening and smiled, “Yuanbao, I’ve come to your house so many times, don’t you recognize me yet?”
Lu Yuanbao’s black shiny eyes answered, “I do. You’re Aunt Chen.”
“That’s right. I’m Aunt Chen, your mom’s good friend and a neighbor in the compound. So when you come here, I want to check if you’re dressed properly. The weather’s cold, don’t want you to catch a cold.” Chen Fengying stopped approaching and waved at Lu Yuanbao.
After hesitating a moment, Yuanbao thought about how close Chu Yue and Chen Fengying were, felt reassured, and slowly moved closer.
Chen Fengying patted his head. She especially liked this polite, sensible, and obedient child. While checking his clothes, she explained:
“Last night… after you fell asleep, some things happened. I don’t know the exact details, but something went wrong… Oh! These are all wool clothes! They’re so soft to the touch. All warm clothes! Chu Mei really cares about you… After it happened, your mom and dad both went out.”
Hearing this, Yuanbao suddenly slipped from Chen Fengying’s arms and rushed to Chu Yue’s room.
With a bang, he pushed the door open.
He saw the empty room. Since no one was inside, the temperature was very low, and a cold breeze hit his face.
The room looked much like before, except the blankets were messy, piled on the bed, probably because Chu Yue and Lu Zhanlin left in a hurry and didn’t have time to tidy up.
Empty… no one…
The once-happy Lu Yuanbao’s mood dropped suddenly.
Turns out it wasn’t that the adults were sleeping in, but that he had been left behind.
Chen Fengying came over and stood beside Lu Yuanbao, continuing, “When Chu Mei and Commander Lu left, they were worried about you being alone at home, so they specially asked me to take care of you. Yuanbao, I came to check on you twice last night, but you were sleeping soundly, so I didn’t wake you. I didn’t expect you to get up so early this morning. How long have you been waiting? Are you hungry?”
Lu Yuanbao shook his head, “Not hungry.”
Chen Fengying then suggested, “Yuanbao, since no one is home with you, why don’t you come to my house? My son Dazhuang just got up after I gave him a spanking, you can play games with him.”
Lu Yuanbao’s small face still looked lonely, his eyes faint, showing no interest in Chen Fengying’s words.
He glanced around the empty room, then went back to sit on the small stool, saying, “Aunt Chen, did they say when they’d be back?”
“They didn’t say. They’ll probably come back only after everything is finished. Nobody knows when that will be. Yuanbao, come on, come to my house and play with Dazhuang, then have breakfast together. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day—you shouldn’t let yourself get hungry, or Chu Mei will worry…”
Chen Fengying coaxed him for a while until finally she convinced the little grown-up Lu Yuanbao to go to her house for breakfast.
She even gave him a few extra pork dumplings and told him not to be shy—just eat heartily.
Everything seemed normal so far, but the problem started when Commander He and Madam He arrived, making the whole courtyard lively all of a sudden—more festive than last night’s New Year’s Eve.
The sisters-in-law all dressed in their best clothes and pulled out their children, eager to show their faces in front of Commander He.
Chen Fengying also, caught up in the moment, focused all her attention on her son and overlooked Lu Yuanbao standing quietly on the side.
Lu Yuanbao was left all alone in the corner, watching the lively crowd not far away. After a few glances, he quietly turned and left.
He wanted to go home and continue waiting for Chu Yue and Lu Zhanlin to come back.
They would definitely come back soon. Chu Yue had even said that on the first day of the lunar new year he should kowtow and wish a Happy New Year, and she would give him a red envelope.
Lu Yuanbao clenched his small hand tightly, repeatedly strengthening the thought deep in his heart:
They… will definitely come back!
That lonely yet stubborn little figure was just noticed by Commander He, who looked up and shouted toward Lu Yuanbao’s direction, “That child— that child, come here— whose child is this? Why isn’t there an adult with him?”
Lu Yuanbao didn’t realize these words were meant for him and kept facing away. The sisters-in-law all turned to look toward where Commander He was pointing and then saw Lu Yuanbao about to leave.
Everyone was stunned for a moment. Chen Fengying immediately reacted, shouting, “Yuanbao!”
She hurried over and grabbed Lu Yuanbao’s hand, “Yuanbao, don’t go. Commander He is talking to you! Remember, when the elders speak, you listen and behave. This is Commander He.”
Chen Fengying quickly straightened Lu Yuanbao’s clothes, tidied his hair, and took his little hand to bring him in front of Commander He.
Before Chen Fengying could say anything, Commander He had already bent down and asked Lu Yuanbao,
“This child looks really good—handsome face, bright eyes.” Commander He had seen countless kinds of people; his gaze toward soldiers was sharp, and his eyes for children were just as keen. “This child, I feel a connection with him. Very good. Tell me, which family do you belong to?”
