1970s: Kicked Out of the House and Brought Home by a Cold-Faced Officer Chapter 140

Chapter 140: Marrying You, What a Waste!

As soon as those words were spoken, Xu Feng was stunned.

Right, delivering a baby… That involves surgery, it’s bloody, and if things go wrong, it could result in both mother and child dying.

Back then, when Chu Yue had just arrived at the military compound on her very first day, she didn’t know anyone — not even Lu Zhanlin — and yet she had stepped up without hesitation when help was needed. She had such guts, so decisive and unafraid of consequences.

That kind of decisiveness was exactly what Xu Feng admired.

Now that he thought about it, just from that incident alone, it was clear that Chu Yue was no ordinary woman.

At the same time, even Lu Zhanlin, who was recounting the story, froze for a moment.

He suddenly recalled — if Chu Yue could perform surgery and help deliver a baby, how could she possibly be afraid of killing a chicken?

So that night when Xu Feng came over for dinner, and Chu Yue claimed she was “too scared” to kill the chicken…

That was all an act?

Lu Zhanlin’s calm face subtly shifted, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips, equal parts helpless and amused.

It turned out that in this unexpected moment, he had discovered a new side to his wife.

Thinking back, that girl on the train who could calmly handle all kinds of emergencies — how could she possibly be frightened by a measly little chicken?

If anything, he was the one who had just blindly believed her without a second thought.

Was this what they call falling for a beauty’s trick?

The more Lu Zhanlin thought about it, the more he felt both helpless and amused.

Meanwhile, Xu Feng hadn’t noticed Lu Zhanlin’s inner thoughts swirling around. He was still seriously mulling over what Lu had just said. His playful demeanor faded, replaced by a rare seriousness as he asked again with uncertainty:

“Was it really your wife who delivered the baby? I heard the medical unit and Military Doctor Hao arrived later and barely saved the child’s life…”

Perhaps the incident involving a surgical birth was just too extraordinary, and so rumors within the barracks had become a jumbled mess.

Lu Zhanlin didn’t bother answering Xu Feng’s doubt directly, and instead shared something he had personally experienced:

“Earlier on the train, while returning from a mission, I injured my right arm. I didn’t seek treatment because I didn’t want to delay the team. After we got off the train, the wound miraculously healed. You’ve been asking me about that ever since.”

“Yeah, I remember it was pretty bad — you couldn’t even move your arm at first. Then after just one night on the train, it somehow got better—”

Xu Feng’s voice suddenly cut off mid-sentence, his pupils trembling slightly.

There’s no such thing in this world as something getting better “somehow.” There’s always a reason.

That night on the train, Chu Yue had been sitting right next to Lu Zhanlin. The only possible explanation was that Chu Yue had treated his injured arm while they were on the train.

No need for Xu Feng to voice the rest of his thoughts — Lu Zhanlin simply nodded, silently answering the question in Xu Feng’s heart.

If it weren’t for the fact that Lu Zhanlin had to keep Commander He’s wife’s illness private and couldn’t tell the full story, Xu Feng’s jaw would have dropped to the ground by now.

He had actually made those miracle-working hands, capable of saving lives, cook for him.

What a waste!

For a moment, there was utter silence.

Only the sound of soldiers running in formation echoed from the nearby training ground.

After a long pause—

Xu Feng suddenly let out a low shout,
“Damn! With a skill set like that, the little sister-in-law could be a military doctor in the army!”

As soon as he finished speaking, Xu Feng turned his head and gave Lu Zhanlin a few sideways glances.

That look seemed to say: We’re both men, so how the hell did you get so lucky? Not only is your wife beautiful and a great cook, but she’s also got medical skills that could bring the dead back to life.

Lu Zhanlin couldn’t be bothered with Xu Feng’s inner jealousy. After glancing at him a few times, he simply turned and walked away decisively.

“Commander Lu! All I said was that I envy you for having such a great wife—do you have to be so cold and heartless about it? I haven’t completely lost my mind to try and steal her from you—”

The rest of Xu Feng’s sentence was cut off because a voice suddenly called out from behind him.

“Comrade He, hello!”

Xu Feng turned around and saw He Meijiao not far behind him.

He smacked his forehead—so that’s why Lu Zhanlin had taken off so fast. It wasn’t indifference toward Xu Feng at all, but the clean boundaries of a married man—he wouldn’t let himself be caught in even a hint of gossip.

After all… Chu Yue could wield a scalpel in surgery—and possibly for other things, too.

Xu Feng wanted to leave as well, but his unit was training nearby—he couldn’t just walk away.

So he could only stand there and watch as He Meijiao came right up to him.

With her beautiful face lifted arrogantly, she asked impatiently,
“Where’s Commander Lu? He was just with you—why did he disappear the moment I arrived?”

“He Meijiao, Commander Lu is Commander Lu, and I’m me. I’m not a worm in his stomach—how would I know where he went?”

“Hmph! Aren’t you always tagging along behind Lu Zhanlin like a little shadow? Wherever he goes, you follow. How could you not know where he went?” He Meijiao retorted, completely unaware that there was anything wrong with what she was saying.

Xu Feng’s mouth twitched. Any man would be annoyed hearing something like that.

He responded seriously,
“He Meijiao, we’re in the military right now. I’m a company commander, and you’re a medic. We both have our own duties and must stay at our posts—not spend our time chasing after the commander.”

“Xu Feng! What’s that supposed to mean?” He Meijiao instantly heard the sarcasm in his words and stomped her foot in anger.

Xu Feng became even more direct:
“I, Xu Feng, have always said what’s on my mind—so yes, I mean exactly what I just said. Commander Lu is already married. He’s a man with a wife. You, an unmarried girl, constantly chasing after him—what’s that supposed to mean? You don’t care about your own reputation, but do you want to ruin his too? Let me tell you something—Commander Lu and his wife, the little sister-in-law, they’re childhood sweethearts, made for each other. There’s no space for anyone else to come between them. He Meijiao, you’d better wake up!”

“Xu Feng, how dare you talk to me like that! Do you know who I am?” He Meijiao’s face turned red with fury. She looked like she wanted to claw him right there.

But Xu Feng stood firm, unmoved, and sneered in disdain.

“Who are you? You’re just a medic in the military health unit—who do you think you are? He Meijiao, not only am I talking to you like this now, I’d say the same thing even if your grandfather were standing right here. And you—you’d better tone down that spoiled rich-girl temper of yours. Don’t disgrace your grandfather!”

With that, Xu Feng didn’t even glance at He Meijiao again. He turned and strode straight into the training field.

“One-two-one, one-two-one! Step it up! It’s only 5,000 meters—what lap are you on, and you’re already this slow? What are you gonna do on the battlefield, carry a machine gun and crawl? Move it, move it, move it!”

The soldiers’ footsteps suddenly picked up the pace—fast and synchronized.

Each thundering step seemed to pound right onto He Meijiao’s chest.

She gritted her teeth tightly, eyes red with fury, and glared at Xu Feng in the marching ranks—she wanted nothing more than to drag him out and give him a beating.
