Chapter 43
Jiang Che was surprised, then blushed slightly, “Actually, I’m pretty full.”
Ji Wanqing rolled her eyes at him, “You’ve been doing physical labor all morning, how could that little bit of food be enough? You can’t even eat your fill at home, do you want people to say I’m mistreating you?”
“No, no, of course not!”
Ji Wanqing pushed the bowl towards him, “Eat.”
Jiang Che smiled and obeyed. After finishing the big bowl of braised pork rice, his stomach finally felt comfortably full.
In the afternoon, the couple went to the agricultural machinery station to buy seeds and tiles. Jiang Che asked a few brothers from the camp to come back and help with the roof construction.
As a thank you, Ji Wanqing kept them for dinner. Each of them had a bowl of braised pork rice with two braised eggs. She had specially reheated the braised pork to thicken the sauce and added rock sugar and beer for a richer and less greasy flavor.
They had heard that the sister-in-law’s cooking made the whole building smell delicious, and although they were a bit embarrassed, they shamelessly stayed.
The white rice was coated with rich, red-brown meat sauce, making their appetites soar!
The few men ate silently, shoveling down the rice.
Before leaving, they enthusiastically helped wash the dishes, pump water, and fill the water tank. They joked with Jiang Che, “Camp Commander, if you need anything in the future, just call us, we’ll come as long as there’s food!”
Jiang Che mercilessly pushed them out, “We’ll talk about it next time.”
There wouldn’t be a next time anyway.
The new bathroom was built quite well, twice the size of the old shed. It was not only spacious but also had a dry and wet separation according to Ji Wanqing’s request, greatly improving the comfort of use.
In the evening, Ji Wanqing sat in front of the dressing table, combing her hair to improve blood circulation.
Jiang Che came up after washing up, “I have to go to the regiment headquarters early tomorrow to start work. If you’re bored at home alone, you can ask Instructor Zheng for a light job. The salary doesn’t have to be high, but it’s not good for you to stay alone in the house for a long time, it’s bad for your mood.”
Soldiers who go to the battlefield have regular psychological tests and counseling, so Jiang Che knew that staying at home alone for too long with no one to accompany you can lead to depression.
But Ji Wanqing came from the crazy world of the apocalypse. She was absolutely thrilled to be living a peaceful, carefree, and idle life.
She quickly shook her head, “No need, I think it’s great to be alone at home, I can do whatever I want.”
Jiang Che didn’t force her, “Then go out for a walk more often, don’t stay cooped up at home all the time.”
Before their wedding, he called his third brother in Beijing to find a bicycle ticket. He should receive it in a few days, but he didn’t brag about it yet because he hadn’t gotten it.
Early the next morning, Jiang Che left early.
Ji Wanqing slept until she woke up naturally, then put on a luxurious silk nightgown, leisurely ground herself a cup of coffee and made a sandwich. She sat in the spacious courtyard, watching the clouds drift by.
So comfortable~
Cough, if the courtyard scenery were a little more tidy, it would be even better. It’s bare and looks like a graveyard.
“Bang bang—”
A rhythmic knocking sound came from the door. Ji Wanqing quickly went back to the hall, slipped into clothes that belonged to this era, and as she passed the courtyard, she put the enamel coffee cup and gilded plate on the table into the space before opening the door.
It was Ye Yaman.
Ji Wanqing was a little surprised.
Yesterday, she brought pastries to visit her. Ye Yaman was indifferent when she learned of her intentions, returning two packets of her own homemade flower tea, without saying a word. Then she sent her away.
So Ji Wanqing wasn’t surprised when Sister Qiu Xia and Aunt Cui E said that Ye Yaman was aloof and difficult to get along with.
But she had a good impression of Ye Yaman because she was the only one besides Sister Hongmei and Aunt Yulan who gave a return gift.
Although the gifts exchanged were not valuable, the intention behind them was important.
“Uh, is there something you need?”
Ye Yaman stood at the door, her eyes not glancing inside, and said softly, “I, I smelled the coffee beans while passing by your house. Could you sell me some?”
Ji Wanqing was silent.
Who would have thought that drinking a cup of coffee in a spacious courtyard could be smelled by others?
In this era, drinking coffee could be definitively classified as a “petit bourgeois” act, and could lead to being paraded through the streets and criticized.
Ye Yaman explained in a low voice, “I’m not threatening or intimidating you. I really haven’t had coffee for a long time, I really want a cup.”
Caffeine is addictive.
Just like the craving for a glamorous and extravagant life.
Even though Ye Yaman had left that life seven or eight years ago, she still couldn’t forget the refined, elegant, stylish, and tasteful quality life.
That’s why she didn’t like it here.
She didn’t like the dusty houses, the rough food, the coarse linen clothes, and she didn’t like all the people who were unhygienic.
Especially since her other cousins and sisters were all living abroad, only her soul was trapped here, day after day, suppressing her, licking her wounds from the past.
The pursuit of a better life is an instinct ingrained in us all. It can’t be said that Ye Yaman was wrong, it can only be said that she was born in the wrong era.
Seeing that Ji Wanqing was still silent, Ye Yaman had to offer more chips.
She pleaded, “You just need to sell me some coffee beans. I have a coffee machine at home, I can grind it myself.”
A coffee machine in the 1970s must be an antique from abroad.
Ji Wanqing became interested, “Can I go take a look?”
“Of course.” Ye Yaman knew that this meant the other party had accepted her.
They both had secrets that couldn’t be revealed, and only by trusting each other could they keep them.
Ji Wanqing went back to change her shoes and took a small bag filled with coffee beans.
Ye Yaman’s house had a winding path of small pebbles, with white, purple, and pink flowers planted on both sides, making it exceptionally clean and tidy.
This was the first time Ji Wanqing had seen such a beautiful and elegant courtyard in this era!
“These are potato flowers and chrysanthemum flowers. It’s not allowed to raise flowers now, so I can only plant some vegetables to decorate the yard.”
Ye Yaman asked Ji Wanqing to wait in the courtyard while she went to the cellar in the backyard and brought up a leather suitcase. It contained an Italian antique hand-cranked coffee machine.
The antique copper floral patterns were elegant and beautiful, and the black sandalwood base drawer below still faintly emitted a mixed aroma of wood and coffee.
Looking at the beautiful scenery of the courtyard, Ji Wanqing immediately decided, “Wait for me.”
Then she went home and brought the set of enamel porcelain coffee cups and the gilded plates.
Ye Yaman was very excited.
She knew that this beautiful girl wearing a Rolex was, like her, someone who longed for a refined life!
She didn’t hide anything anymore. She took a complex and beautiful tablecloth from the cellar and spread it out, and then took a blue and white porcelain vase and placed it on top, filled with fresh and vibrant flowers.
Ji Wanqing sat comfortably in the courtyard, holding the coffee cup in her delicate hand, taking a sip and smelling the aroma.
This kind of leisurely and carefree life was simply too comfortable!
Unfortunately, Ye Yaman’s house didn’t have a lounge chair, otherwise, with a gentle breeze and a rocking chair, it would be even better.
