Soon, the kitchen was filled with the fragrant aroma of cooking meat. Wen Changming truly didn’t mind spending money on this; it had been a long time since the Wen family had made braised pork. Now, it seemed like it was being used to calculate something against her.
But with the Bai Jie Dan in her hand, even if he put rat poison in the food, Wen Nuan would eat it without hesitation today.
“Xiao Nuan, come out and eat!”
Wen Changming’s voice rang out from outside the door. After all these years, across two lifetimes, this was the first time that her scumbag of a father had called her to eat.
In the past, it was always Wen Nuan who would prepare the meals and bring them to them. As she grew older, she became a little maid of sorts, but little did they know, they would never again be treated like this in the future.
“Xiao Nuan, come out and eat!”
Wen Changming called for the second time, and only then did Wen Nuan snap out of her thoughts and walk out. Her expression remained calm, as though nothing had happened at all.
At the dinner table, there were two large plates of steamed buns filled with dough. Under the angry and resentful gaze of Wen Qing, Wen Nuan calmly sat down, then picked up a bun and took a bite.
“This ready-made meal is so delicious! No wonder everyone wants to be served!”
“Xiao Nuan, stop talking nonsense! Hurry and eat!”
Even though the situation was not as tense now, some things still shouldn’t be said so carelessly.
Liking to be served, hiring a maid—these were capitalist habits that needed to be strictly eradicated.
Wen Nuan curled her lips. Under Wen Changming’s eager gaze, she picked up a large piece of braised pork and stuffed it into her mouth.
The rich, savory sauce, the tender, flavorful meat—it melted in her mouth. She hadn’t expected Tan Xiulian to have such cooking skills.
“How is it? Your Aunt Xiulian’s braised pork tastes good, right? Eat a few more pieces!”
Wen Changming said with a grin, looking like a mischievous weasel with good intentions.
“It’s okay… it’s just so-so.”
Of course, Wen Nuan wouldn’t praise Tan Xiulian aloud. Though she said this, her hands didn’t slow down in the slightest.
A small plate of braised pork might look like a little, but in reality, there were only about ten pieces. Before long, half of it was already gone, and Wen Qing was starting to get anxious.
“Wen Nuan, why are you eating so much? I didn’t even notice you ate so much! Don’t you dare eat it all—what’s left is mine!”
Before Wen Nuan could retort, Wen Changming spoke up first:
“Qingqing, I asked Dr. Zhou at the clinic. If you want your face to heal quickly, you need to eat something light. Otherwise, it could easily get inflamed.
Be good, wait until you’re better to eat. This is specially made for your sister today! Your sister has had it hard these past few years. We all need to make it up to her, don’t we?”
Wen Nuan sneered inwardly. If only she knew Wen Changming’s true intentions, Wen Nuan would probably be so moved that she would cry her eyes out.
Since she was young, this was the first time her scumbag of a father had stopped Wen Qing from snatching food, but unfortunately, it wasn’t for her sake—it was for Wen Qing’s.
Wen Nuan knew exactly what Wen Changming was up to. Feeling the Bai Jie Dan in her pocket, she continued eating the meat with an impassive expression.
No matter what he was planning, filling her stomach came first. Even if things escalated later, she knew she wouldn’t be the one at a disadvantage.
Wen Qing glared at Wen Nuan with hatred, her swollen face a reminder of her discomfort, and she could only swallow dryly, unable to do anything else.
As for Tan Xiulian, though she looked slightly uncomfortable, she didn’t say much, probably due to Wen Changming’s lack of comment.
After all, the matter of her 1,200 yuan was still unresolved. Wen Changming simply hadn’t found the time to deal with it yet; it wasn’t that he had forgotten.
Wen Nuan carefully observed everyone’s expressions without showing any sign, continuing to eat with relish.
After a long while, she felt no unusual effects in her body. She couldn’t help but wonder—could it be that Wen Changming didn’t put anything in the food?
Then why had he gone to the black clinic? Could it really have been just to ask about Wen Qing’s dietary restrictions?
Shaking her head, Wen Nuan couldn’t even believe the thought herself.
Although Wen Changming always favored Wen Qing, his deep-rooted chauvinism and sense of self-importance meant that he would never concern himself with such trivial matters.
At this point, the sky outside was gradually darkening. After finishing her meal, Wen Nuan didn’t want to continue playing along.
“I’m full. I’m going to bed now. Thanks for the meal. Oh, and Team Leader Wen, don’t forget about the dowry chest.”
“By tomorrow morning, when I open my eyes, I expect to see it. If not, don’t blame me for not being polite!”
Wen Nuan’s words acted like a trigger, instantly unleashing the hidden malice within Wen Changming. However, it was still not the right time to act, so he had no choice but to suppress his anger.
“I know. Go to bed now.”
Wen Nuan naturally sensed Wen Changming’s mood, but she didn’t care about it at all.
Back in her room, she stood on the bed, then stepped on a stool, just barely reaching the small skylight on the wall. Quietly, she cracked it open.
No sooner had Wen Nuan finished than Wen Changming and Tan Xiulian appeared in the kitchen. That’s right, Wen Nuan’s small partition was right next to the kitchen.
Through the small skylight, Wen Nuan could clearly hear the conversation between Wen Changming and Tan Xiulian. Although they had lowered their voices, it still didn’t escape her keen ears.
“Brother Ming, have you thought this through? Is Wen Nuan really your biological daughter? And what about when the committee comes asking for her? Will we get implicated?”
“Don’t worry. We’ll fake a suicide scene, say the girl tried to jump into the river. Once she’s dead, what will the revolutionary committee do?”
Wen Changming’s voice was cold, as though he were speaking about an unimportant stranger. In his words, there wasn’t the slightest trace of affection for Wen Nuan, his own daughter.
Tan Xiulian saw it all, and it made her feel a growing sense of caution towards Wen Changming.
If Wen Changming could treat Wen Nuan like this, would he one day be just as ruthless with her?
Thinking of the 1,200 yuan, Tan Xiulian felt even more uneasy. She wondered if this situation would force her to beg for mercy, but she could never bring herself to do so.
She didn’t dare. Deep down, she hoped Wen Changming would forget about the matter. Why else would she bring it up and admit her mistake on her own?
“Brother Ming, about Qingqing’s job…”
“Don’t worry about that. I’ll go get the things she wants right away. Tomorrow, when she sees them, she’ll naturally give the job to Qingqing.
Once we finish the paperwork, I’ll slip her some medicine at night, and then Liu the cripple can come and carry her away.
The job will be Qingqing’s, and the things will still be there. Plus, we’ll have an extra source of income.”
“Just don’t forget to take the money from that girl. Don’t let Liu the cripple get any of it!”
“Of course, don’t worry!”
Liu the cripple? In her past life, Wen Changming had sold her to Liu, but she never expected that in this lifetime, their connection would form so early.
But Wen Changming hadn’t gone anywhere today except the machine factory, had he? When did he and Liu the cripple start working together?
Wen Nuan frowned… Suddenly, she had an idea!
Aside from the machine factory, Wen Changming had only visited that black clinic. Could it be that there was some connection between the black clinic and Liu the cripple?
The more Wen Nuan thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed. After Wen Changming and Tan Xiulian left the kitchen, Wen Nuan quietly climbed down from above.
She had originally thought she would have to wait a long time to get her revenge, but it seemed Wen Changming had just handed her an opportunity.
After considering it from all angles, Wen Nuan finally decided to turn the tables and use this chance to her advantage!
