Chapter 20: Wen Qing Reports the Case

When Wen Nuan and Li Haiyang left the police station, it was already deep into the night. At this time, Wen Qing was still soundly asleep in her room, oblivious to the world.

There wasn’t much left to pack in her own room, so after returning, Wen Nuan went straight to Wen Changming and Tan Xiulian’s room.

She didn’t move the furniture or large items. If she had cleared everything out all at once, it could have caused unnecessary trouble—after all, she had just personally sent that worthless father of hers away.

However, as for the smaller items, she had no intention of being polite.

Inside the wardrobe, there were brand-new quilts, which Wen Nuan accepted without hesitation. In the drawers, she found a pair of watches—one men’s and one women’s. Wen Nuan didn’t let those slip by either.

In addition to these, of course, there was Tan Xiulian’s secret stash of money and Wen Changming’s personal safe. No matter how well-hidden they were, they couldn’t withstand Wen Nuan’s meticulous search!

She carefully checked every nook and cranny, even lifting up every tile on the floor.

Tan Xiulian had saved only a pitiful amount of private money, just a few dozen yuan, as she needed to support her family back home. But Wen Changming was a different story.

Wen Nuan found a wooden box embedded in the wall behind the wardrobe. Inside, not only were there over ten gold bars, but there was also more than two thousand yuan in cash.

Wen Nuan strongly suspected that this money had come from the Qi family after her maternal grandparents passed away. Otherwise, with Wen Changming’s income, it would have taken him many years to save up such a large sum.

Without hesitation, Wen Nuan took all the money, tickets, and other valuables. She staged a break-in scene, making it look like a robbery, and then returned to her own room to catch up on some sleep.

No one woke her up. Wen Qing slept until well past nine in the morning, and when she finally woke up, she immediately sensed something was off.

Normally, no matter how late it was, she would have been woken up for breakfast! Why hadn’t she heard any noise today?

Wen Qing quickly got dressed and went out. Seeing the door to her parents’ room open, she thought they hadn’t left yet, so she pushed the door open and walked in.

“Ah…”

The moment she saw the room, she knew something was wrong. The clothes were scattered, the wardrobe doors were wide open—everything pointed to something having happened.

In her own room, Wen Nuan was woken by Wen Qing’s shout. After being groggy for a few seconds, she fully woke up.

With a sly smile on her face, Wen Nuan opened the door and walked out.

“What’s all the shouting about? Early in the morning, can’t you be quiet?”

“Wen Nuan!”

“Wen Nuan, did a thief break into our house?”

In her panic, Wen Qing forgot all the previous distance between them. Instinctively, she turned to Wen Nuan for support, hoping she could provide some clarity.

“What do you mean, ‘our house’? I clearly remember we’re not a family anymore,” Wen Nuan replied coldly. “By the way, just so you know, last night while you were asleep, your parents went to the police station. By now, they’re probably about to be sent to the labor camp!”

“What? What did you say? Why?”

“Of course, it’s because they committed a crime! They actually colluded with human traffickers, trying to sell me off.

Your wonderful parents, huh? Well, now we’ll see if they’ll still try to harm me!”

“You… Wen Nuan, if it weren’t for your extreme actions, my parents would never have done this!”

“Heh, as expected, you can’t expect people who aren’t family to understand each other. Why don’t you admit that it’s because you all got too greedy, too ambitious, and that’s why things have turned out this way?

I’m not going to waste any more words with you. Anyway, what happens with the Wen family has nothing to do with me. Tomorrow morning, I’m leaving for the countryside. Good luck to you all!”

“You…”

Wen Qing was feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, her mind a jumbled mess. The house had been robbed, her parents were taken to the police station—what was she supposed to do now?

“Wen Nuan… stop right there!”

Looking up at Wen Nuan, who was about to leave, Wen Qing quickly called out to stop her.

“Wen Nuan… is it you? Did you cause all this? Did you take things from the house?”

Wen Nuan hadn’t expected Wen Qing to be momentarily sharp, but when it came to baseless accusations, she wasn’t about to admit to anything!

“Wen Qing, what nonsense are you talking? I just came back from the police station to sleep. I didn’t even step foot into your parents’ room!

What, do you want to frame someone? You’ve picked the wrong person for that! Consider this a warning. Next time you falsely accuse someone with your sharp tongue, I’ll slap you across the face!”

“You…”

Wen Qing glared angrily at Wen Nuan. Although she didn’t have any evidence, she was certain that this incident was caused by Wen Nuan.

With a flicker in her eyes, Wen Qing seemed to think of something and immediately ran past Wen Nuan, heading outside.

Watching her leave, Wen Nuan returned to her room. She took a handbag from her hidden space and packed it with the torn quilts, broken mattresses, and a few old clothes from the bed.

In the compartments of the handbag, Wen Nuan placed the 1,400 yuan and the receipts she had gotten from Wen Changming earlier, along with the papers severing ties with her family.

As expected, within ten minutes, Wen Qing returned with two police officers.

“Wen Nuan, come here!”

Hearing Wen Qing’s shout, Wen Nuan casually opened the door, only to find that the two police officers were the same ones who had visited last night.

“Officer Zhao, Officer Zhou, what brings you here?”

The two officers looked at Wen Nuan in slight surprise, but then quickly recovered.

“Hello, Comrade Wen Nuan. We received a report. This person here claims that you stole items from their home, so we’ve come to investigate.”

“Officer Zhao, this is completely a false accusation from Wen Qing. I came back from the police station very late last night.

When I returned, the gate to the yard was open, and after I closed it, I went straight to my room to sleep. I was even woken up this morning by Wen Qing.

As for Wen Changming and Tan Xiulian’s room, I’ve never even been in there, and I have no idea what’s missing!”

Officer Zhao nodded thoughtfully. Although Wen Nuan seemed suspicious, if what she said was true and the gate had been wide open, it was possible that something else had happened in the meantime.

“Then, Comrade Wen Qing, are you sure about what exactly is missing from the house?”

Wen Qing, when asked, was flustered. She had no idea what was missing. All she saw was the mess in the house, and instinctively, she felt something must have been stolen.

“I… I don’t know… The room is just really messy. You’ll have to ask my mother about that!”

The two police officers exchanged a glance, both raising their eyebrows in suspicion.

“Comrade Wen Qing, that’s not what you said earlier. You were very certain that Wen Nuan stole things from your house, and that’s why we came with you.”

“I… I… but something is definitely missing! If you don’t believe me, go see for yourselves!”

Reluctantly, the two police officers went to the room Wen Qing pointed to and, sure enough, found signs of a robbery.

The room was in complete disarray, with drawers and cabinets wide open.

“We can see the situation for ourselves, but are you absolutely sure about what exactly is missing? We’ll follow up and verify this further, so wait for our news.”

Seeing the two officers preparing to leave, Wen Qing, unwilling to let it go, stopped them once more.

“Officers, this was definitely Wen Nuan’s doing. Those items are probably hidden in her room right now! She’s leaving for the countryside tomorrow, you can’t just let this slide!”

“To the countryside?”

Upon receiving the officers’ questioning gazes, Wen Nuan quickly responded with a touch of defiance.

“That’s right, I’m leaving for the countryside tomorrow, taking the morning train. But I definitely didn’t take anything from the Wen family.

If you don’t believe me, feel free to search my things. My bags are already packed; I was planning to leave today.

The train station is a bit far, so I was thinking of staying at a guesthouse nearby tonight. I never expected something like this to happen.”

“Officers, the items were definitely taken by her. You need to search thoroughly!”
