Chapter 47 The Man Behind the Scenes Appears
Qin Penghai broke into a cold sweat at the sound of Ming Leyao’s words. He always considered himself ruthless in this line of work, but clearly, he was no match for her. If the two sides really clashed, he, the middleman, would definitely be caught in the crossfire.
As he struggled to decide whether to stick with his old contacts or switch allegiance to this soon-to-be new boss, a disdainful female voice suddenly rang out.
“What ‘Miss of Gangcheng’? More like a slut, if you ask me. Just look at that seductive little tramp. Who knows how many men she’s been with, and she still dares talk business with our boss? Our boss wouldn’t touch her with a ten-foot pole!”
The crowd fell into stunned silence.
Ming Leyao’s delicate brows arched upward as she smiled at the woman — who was actually quite pretty, but carried an air of superiority.
“Kang Miss, Kang Miss, please calm down, calm down!” Qin Penghai hurried forward, panicked, afraid of an irreversible outcome.
“I am calm,” Ming Leyao said coolly.
She tossed her cigar to the ground, and in her high heels, sashayed gracefully up to the woman. The difference in height wasn’t obvious from afar, but now that they were face-to-face, it created a sudden sense of impending danger — like a predator closing in on prey.
The woman had to look up at her, and when she saw that stunning face up close, jealousy twisted her own features into something nearly unrecognizable. She opened her mouth to hurl another insult—
But Ming Leyao slapped her. Hard.
Smack!
The sharp sound of the slap rang out through the quiet night.
Everyone stared in disbelief.
The woman stood stunned for a second, then shrieked and lunged at Ming Leyao in a wild attempt to claw at her.
Ming Leyao calmly pulled out a small throwing knife and plunged it straight into the woman’s reaching hand. With her other hand, she easily restrained her and slammed her against a brick wall.
Her voice was icy and sharp as broken glass.
“You’re the first person to make me strike. How does it feel? Honored?”
“You—!”
“Since you’re this disrespectful, I’ll just punish someone else instead.”
With that, she turned and in a blink was in front of Mr. Tang, her fiery red figure reflected in his eyes.
She raised her knife and went to strike—
“Kang Miss, you dare—”
Mr. Tang swiftly dodged out of her range and stood his ground with composure.
“You didn’t think we came here with just the two of us, did you?”
Just as Qin Penghai thought Ming Leyao might order her bodyguards to draw their guns and end Tang right there—
Ming Leyao suddenly turned, grabbing the “refined” woman by the throat. Her voice echoed coldly down the empty street:
“Main target secured. Brothers, close the net.”
The people behind Ming Leyao sprang into action instantly.
Qin Penghai and Tang weren’t fools — they knew what was happening. Qin tried to flee with his men, but was immediately stopped and knocked out cold by Fu Wencheng and his icy gaze.
As for Tang, he had a chance to escape in the chaos — but for some reason, he didn’t.
The people he brought? Already taken care of by others lying in wait.
In the middle of all this, Ming Leyao stood in her red dress, lazily leaning to one side — a striking presence in the night.
When the fight was over, Fu Wencheng turned back and looked at her under the moonlight. His lips curved slightly.
His girl — was that impressive.
That moment — swift, fierce, and clean — he was sure he’d remember it for the rest of his life.
The operation had gone smoothly. With people and evidence secured, Fu Wencheng was about to leave for follow-up procedures when Ming Leyao whispered in his ear:
“That man’s not the boss. The woman is.”
“Huh?”
“I went after her just now — she acted scared, but there was no real fear in her eyes. The man, though, got nervous and instinctively tried to protect her. Then I tested the man — and the woman didn’t even flinch. That’s not how someone treats a boss.”
“Smart,” Fu Wencheng gave her a thumbs up.
She noticed such subtle details — truly impressive.
“You guys better interrogate her carefully. You might get an unexpected bonus.”
“Mm. You go home and rest. I’ll find you when this is over.”
“Got it.”
Fu Wencheng had his responsibilities, and so did Ming Leyao. Mayor Cui had helped a lot on this mission. He never questioned her requests, and since he didn’t ask — it was time for her to take the initiative and talk to him.
By the time she was dropped back off at the small compound they’d set out from, the sky had already begun to lighten. She was mentally and physically exhausted after the all-nighter.
She took off her disguise, ate a quick breakfast, and went straight to bed. She didn’t wake up until noon.
When she stepped outside, rubbing her eyes, she spoke to the person at the door:
“Take me to see Mayor Cui.”
“Yes, Comrade Ming.”
She was brought to the mayor’s office, where Old Master Cui had just finished lunch. When he saw Ming Leyao, his face immediately broke into a wide grin.
“Well, if it isn’t our big hero!”
“Grandpa Cui, now you’re just teasing me.”
“Teasing? Not at all! The people from the military just told me how it went down — wow, it was incredible! I didn’t know you had that kind of skill.”
“Oh, I was just improvising. My hands are still shaking.”
“Look at you, still so modest. Sit, sit. Since you’re here, meet with the military team. They have a few questions — nothing serious, don’t worry.”
“Alright.”
The military team didn’t keep Ming Leyao waiting long. The team was personally led by Fu Wencheng.
“Yaoyao.”
“Mhm, you’re here.”
“Things are mostly wrapped up over there. Thought I’d stop by to check on you before I left.”
The soldiers behind Fu Wencheng were the same ones who had participated in last night’s operation. As soon as they walked in and saw Ming Leyao sitting there obediently and quietly, they were taken aback. She looked nothing like the dazzling, domineering young lady from a prestigious family they saw yesterday.
Except for that face — it was unmistakably the same — there was no trace of yesterday’s imposing presence. It felt… surreal.
But when they saw their normally stern and serious commander smiling like a blooming flower, their hearts instantly settled.
If even the commander had fallen for her, then it was totally fine for them to be shocked. Right…?
“Alright, have a seat and let’s talk,” Mayor Cui said, inviting everyone to sit.
Fu Wencheng glanced at Ming Leyao for confirmation. When she nodded, he gave the signal for them to begin questioning.
The questions were mostly to clarify what had happened, with the primary focus on the origin of those fake guns.
Ming Leyao simply said they were custom-made, with no real principles behind them. The key was that they had to look cool and match her persona.
In truth, they were just modern toy gun replicas — models she’d previously bought to comfort children who came to her for medical treatment. There was no real tech involved, so it was easy to brush off the questioning.
Under the pressure of their commander’s intense gaze, the young soldiers nodded and didn’t press the issue.
They then asked how she figured out the woman was the real boss. Ming Leyao repeated what she had previously told Fu Wencheng.
As they listened, admiration lit up in the soldiers’ eyes — they were all thinking the same thing:
The person our commander likes is definitely not ordinary.
