1980s: The Scheming Officer Fell for Me After Reading My Mind Chapter 24

Chapter 24: Dogs Biting Dogs—A Mouthful of Hair

Su Yi looked at the two officials with a feigned look of terror and confusion, “Comrades, what exactly am I being accused of?”

The two officials exchanged glances, seeing her being pulled along with a bewildered and innocent expression on her face.

They hesitated, unsure if they had the right person.

“Comrade, we’ve received a report that you were selling tea eggs at the bus station. Is this true?”

Su Yi acted shocked and quickly shook her head, “That’s not true at all. I’m just here to buy groceries. How could I possibly be selling tea eggs?”

She always covered most of her face with a headscarf when she went to the bus station.

Even if someone did recognize her, she wasn’t worried.

Catching someone in the act is key, and the officials wouldn’t dare make a mistake.

Sure enough, after looking at her, the two officials turned to Liu Dajie, “Are you sure you’ve got the right person? This young woman doesn’t have any tea eggs or the tools used for selling them!”

“Indeed, we need evidence to arrest someone,” one of the officials said.

Liu Dajie, flustered, quickly reached into Su Yi’s basket.

“There must be something here. She must have hidden it. Comrades, don’t let this girl deceive you—she—”

Before she could finish, Liu Dajie suddenly stopped.

Su Yi’s basket had been thoroughly searched, and there was no sign of tea eggs.

“How could this be? I clearly—”

Su Yi turned to the two officials and said, “Comrades, I understand that she and I have had our differences, but I didn’t expect her to go so far as to frame me like this. I really can’t accept this accusation.”

The two officers looked at each other, recognizing the situation and the sudden appearance of the familiar figure.

“Commander Zhou, what’s wrong? Is there something going on?”

One of the officers asked, clearly uncomfortable with the turn of events.

Commander Zhou nodded towards Su Yi and said, “She is the person I was looking for. You can continue your work and don’t need to pursue this matter any further.”

The officers, relieved to have Commander Zhou’s backing, hesitated but eventually complied. They nodded to Commander Zhou and turned to leave, signaling their departure.

Liu Dajie, meanwhile, was left standing in stunned silence, her plans thwarted by the unexpected intervention. She shot Su Yi a glare filled with frustration and resentment before turning to leave as well.

Su Yi watched the scene unfold with a mixture of relief and curiosity. As the officers and Liu Dajie walked away, she turned to Commander Zhou and offered a grateful smile.

“Commander Zhou, thank you so much. I didn’t know how to handle it just now.”

Commander Zhou, slightly annoyed but maintaining his composure, replied, “You’re welcome. Don’t let this kind of thing happen again. If you have any problems, come directly to me.”

Su Yi nodded, “Understood, thank you!”

With that, Commander Zhou gave her a nod and drove off in his jeep. Su Yi, feeling a sense of relief, adjusted her basket and continued on her way, her mind already turning to the next task at hand.

As soon as Su Yi saw CommanderZhou, she felt as if she had been granted a pardon and quickly ran over.

“Commander Zhou, what are you doing here?”

“Nuannuan said you had been out for a while and hadn’t returned, so she asked me to come and find you.”

Su Yi smiled, “I had just finished buying groceries and was on my way back when I ran into these two comrades. They said someone reported me for doing some small business.”

The two comrades quickly waved their hands, “It’s a misunderstanding, just a misunderstanding. It was that female comrade who reported you.”

As they spoke, they pointed towards Liu Dajie.

“I see. She is from our compound. There was a small misunderstanding between us recently, just a minor issue.”

“I understand. We won’t disturb you any further. I’ll keep this comrade here to give her a few words before letting her go back.”

“Alright.”

Freed, Su Yi quickly got into the car and followed CommanderZhou back to the compound.

“Commander Zhou, thank you so much. If you hadn’t arrived just in time, I probably would have been stuck there for a while.”

Zhou Jinchuan pressed his lips together. “Don’t go again in the future. If you get caught in the act, I won’t be able to help you.”

“If you need money, you can talk to me. I can lend it to you.”

Su Yi tugged at the corner of her mouth. “It’s not really about needing money. I just think I can’t stay at home doing nothing, right? I need to find something to do.”

“Besides, I heard that in Shanghai and Beijing, they’re about to allow small personal businesses soon, so I thought I’d give it a try.”

Zhou Jinchuan nodded. “That’s true, but it won’t be implemented here anytime soon. If no one reports you, fine, but if someone does, you’ll still get into trouble.”

As he spoke, Zhou Jinchuan glanced at her basket.

“By the way, how did you get away? And where’s your pot?”

Su Yi didn’t dare hide anything and quickly explained how she had planned her escape route in advance and where she had hidden her things.

Zhou Jinchuan couldn’t help but smile. “You really were thorough, just for selling a few tea eggs!”

“Hehe, I had no choice. I’m here on my own, so I have to think ahead for myself, don’t I?”

Zhou Jinchuan’s eyes darkened slightly, and he didn’t say anything more.

He drove the car directly to the front of the house.

Su Yi was grateful for his timely help, and before getting out of the car, she invited him, “Commander Zhou, would you like to stay for lunch?”

Zhou Jinchuan, recalling her earlier comment about being polite just for show, lightly cleared his throat and said, “No need. I still have things to do, so I’ll be on my way.”

“Alright then! Oh, I just made some mung bean cakes this morning. Wait a moment, I’ll get some for you to take with you and try.”

With that, Su Yi quickly ran back inside.

Before long, she came out with a small box of mung bean cakes.

“Commander Zhou, you’re usually busy with work. When you’re hungry, you can have a piece to tide you over.”

Zhou Jinchuan was momentarily stunned as he looked at the mung bean cakes she handed him. This time, it didn’t seem like she was being polite just for show, right?

So he reached out and accepted them. “Thank you.”

After that, he drove away.

On the other side, Liu Dajie was reprimanded and educated by two Officers with Red Armband on the street for a while before being released.

As soon as she returned to the courtyard, Liu Dajie rushed to find Bai Ruolin in front of the dormitory.

She had been busy all morning, yet she hadn’t even caught a glimpse of Su Yi.

Instead, she had been caught and lectured!

Now that she thought about it, she even suspected that Bai Ruolin had set her up.

The person at the bus station might not have been Su Yi at all!

Otherwise, how could someone new to the area have managed to slip away in such a short time?

It was all her fault for being too trusting!

She hadn’t even checked the scene before rushing to report it!

So, Liu Dajie ran to the dormitory, shouting at the top of her lungs, “Bai Ruolin, get down here! We’re not done with this!”

Bai Ruolin initially didn’t want anyone to know she had any association with Liu Dajie and had no intention of going down.

But seeing that Liu Dajie wouldn’t stop shouting, she reluctantly sneaked downstairs.

“Shh—Liu Dajie, don’t shout here.”

“What? Feeling guilty, huh? I’m going to shout right here! You really made me suffer today!”

With that, Liu Dajie unleashed a torrent of complaints at Bai Ruolin.

Bai Ruolin, pleading, tried to pull her away, but she couldn’t budge her at all.

Hearing the commotion, Qin Yunfeng also rushed over.

Seeing Bai Ruolin tearfully apologizing, he quickly joined in to calm Liu Dajie down. “Liu Dajie, Comrade Bai is still young. If she offended you in any way, I apologize on her behalf.”

“But this isn’t the place to talk. If others hear, they’ll just laugh at us. How about we go somewhere else and clear up the misunderstanding?”

Liu Dajie snorted coldly, “Fine, let’s go. Who’s afraid of you!”

The three had barely taken a few steps when they encountered Zhou Jinchuan driving out from his house.

Bai Ruolin’s heart tightened with fear, desperately hoping that Zhou Jinchuan wouldn’t notice them and would just drive past.

Liu Dajie was also so frightened that she immediately clammed up.

Forgetting all about causing trouble for Bai Ruolin, she bolted away in a flash.

Zhou Jinchuan drove up to the two of them, rolled down the window, and shot them a warning glance before driving off.
