Chapter 96: Smash the Pot! Don’t Eat It!

Su Yi had just stir-fried the two chickens she had found.

She had already eaten half a chicken and was full.

Thinking about what the village chief’s wife had said in the morning, she proactively lifted the lid of the pot.

“There’s still a lot of chicken in this pot. You can eat it, but I have a condition.”

Several people looked in and saw that there was indeed half a pot of chicken left.

They immediately beamed with joy and said, “What condition? You tell us.”

Su Yi put the lid back on the pot and then told them about her plan to transfer her household registration to the army.

Before, Su Yi only said that she was doing odd jobs in the army kitchen.

Su Xingfa and Zhang Guilan thought it was some kind of unimportant job.

Now, hearing her say that she could move her household registration there, they immediately lit up.

“So, your job isn’t too bad. It’s perfect for our third son, who wanted to join the army but couldn’t. Let him take this job!”

Su Yi was shocked by their shameless audacity.

She thought that they would be happy she was leaving home and that there would be some room for negotiation.

Instead, their first reaction was to give the job to their precious son?

Su Yi sneered, “How old is Su Sanhu? Is he an adult?”

Zhang Guilan scoffed, “Then give it to our second son. He doesn’t have a job either.”

Su Yi snorted, “Second son? Does he know how to cook? And do you think anyone can just do this job? I got in through my own skills and abilities. Second brother doesn’t even know his spices from his salt, he wouldn’t understand a thing!”

“Don’t even think about it. Even if he takes my place, he won’t even get through the door!”

Seeing Su Yi refusing to give up the job, Su Xingfa directly threatened her, “Fine, if you won’t give it to them, then you won’t get this job either. We won’t let you go back to the army, and don’t even think about moving out of this house!”

Zhang Guilan chimed in, “Yes, you can’t go anywhere. Just stay here and wait to get married!”

Su Yi spat at them, “Fine, if you won’t let me move my registration, then from now on, none of you will have a good life!”

She then proceeded to pour the chicken from the pot into the swill bucket.

Su Erqiang had been provoked by Su Yi’s taunts and couldn’t take it anymore.

Su Sanhu was also incredibly hungry.

Seeing Su Yi about to throw away the food, they both boldly rushed forward to grab it.

Seeing this, Su Yi quickly picked up the axe used for chopping firewood and smashed the pot.

“Eat what? Don’t eat anything!”

The large iron pot was smashed into pieces, and the once fragrant chicken fell into the ashes of the stove.

Su Sanhu cried loudly in despair.

Zhang Guilan, seeing the perfectly good iron pot reduced to rubble beyond repair, was so furious that she started seeing stars.

She quickly grabbed the doorframe to keep from falling.

The kitchen was in chaos.  Su Yi took advantage of the commotion and slipped away, leaving them to their crying and shouting.

Once outside, Su Yi decided to go back to the county.  She had two wild boars in her space that had fallen into a trap and were half-dead.

They were bloody and it made her a little uncomfortable thinking about them.

So, she decided to find an opportunity to sell them, and at the same time, scout out the market.

But before going to the county, she planned to visit the village chief.

First, to tell him about the failed negotiations with her family and ask for his help in finding other solutions.

Second, she had just smashed the iron pot, and she couldn’t be sure what Zhang Guilan would say around the village. It was better to go to the village chief first and give him a heads up.

When she arrived, the village chief and his wife saw Su Yi coming again. They warmly welcomed her into their house.

Su Yi immediately told them about her family’s refusal to let her transfer her household registration.

The village chief shook his head helplessly, “I thought your parents wouldn’t be easy to talk to, but I never expected them to come up with the idea of swapping jobs. They are truly foolish.”

“But don’t worry, give me some time. I’ll go talk to the comrades in town first. If that doesn’t work, I’ll go to your house and try to reason with them.”

Su Yi could only agree. Then, she looked apologetic as she told them about smashing the pot.

“I was so angry and frustrated. They were going to attack me, and in the heat of the moment, I accidentally smashed the pot.”

The village chief couldn’t help but twitch his lips after hearing Su Yi’s story.

This girl looked so gentle and weak, but she had such strength?

The village chief’s wife chuckled, “It’s not your fault. They were too much. Not only did they not give you food, but they even tried to steal yours. Don’t worry, if your mother comes to make trouble, I will defend you.”

“Okay, with your word, Auntie, I feel relieved. Otherwise, I wouldn’t dare go home tonight!”

Leaving the village chief’s house, Su Yi headed straight for the county.

When she reached a deserted area, she quickly took out her bicycle from her space.

She then took out the men’s Lei Feng hat and black scarf she had bought in the county last time, and put on the army coat Zhou Jinchuan had given her.

Winter clothes were thick, and with this outfit, she really did look like a young man.

Just a bit skinny.

When Su Yi got to the county, she went straight to the pork stall. It was not even two o’clock yet, and there was hardly any meat left.

Su Yi went over and asked, “Boss, why is your pork sold out so early?”

The man sighed, “It’s true. It’s the end of the year, so many people are buying meat. Although pork is now sold freely, the supply still can’t keep up with demand.”

Su Yi, hearing this, felt hopeful. She quietly asked, “Do you buy wild boar meat?”

The man, who had thought Su Yi was there to buy pork, was surprised to find out she was selling wild boar meat.

Seeing her small frame, he didn’t believe her.  “Where did you get the boar meat?”

“Hunted in the mountains.”

“You can still hunt in this cold weather? Did you hunt it yourself?”

Su Yi smiled, “I don’t have that kind of skill. I’m asking for my family.”

The man, hearing this, readily agreed.  “Okay, but I need to see the quality of your boar meat. If it’s not fresh, it won’t do.”

“I guarantee it’s fresh, but the meat is still outside the city. If you want it, you’ll have to bring your own truck.”

“No problem.”

With that, the pork stall owner closed up shop, hopped onto his tricycle, and followed Su Yi out of the city.

Su Yi had already scouted out a spot beforehand, and brought the man to a secluded place.

She lifted the haystack, revealing two black pigs.

“You can come over now!”

The owner went over and saw that the two black pigs were not quite dead yet, still gasping slightly.

They were definitely fresh, and not the kind of old wild boar.

He was satisfied, “I can take these pigs, but the price won’t be the same as domestic pigs. I’ll give you four cents per pound for the whole thing. I’ll remove the offal, so there won’t be much meat left.”

Su Yi paused, “Boss, can you give me a bit more? If I sell it too cheap, I’m afraid I won’t be able to make up the difference with my family. And if the price is right, we’ll come back to you if we have more good meat.”

The man pondered for a moment, “Alright, four cents and two. I can’t give you any more, these wild boars are a pain to clean.”

Seeing this, Su Yi readily nodded, “Deal!”
