As for Huang Yingying, she stood there, a mess in the wind.
“I can offer more money!” Huang Yingying called out to Gu Nan’s back again.
There was no response.
Gu Nan was not asking for money when he was trying to help Su Niannian!
This person… is really sick, isn’t he?
Gu Nan went straight home.
After getting home, he rinsed himself off with water.
After all, he had been working in the morning and was covered in sweat.
In a little while, Su Niannian would be coming over. Who knows, there might be a chance for something to develop.
She was such a clean person, so it would be bad if she found him smelly.
Thinking of this, Gu Nan’s smile couldn’t be suppressed any longer.
At this moment, Gu Ningning and Gu Zhi were watching Gu Nan with a smile on his face as he twisted and turned around.
“Niannian is really too good to our family.”
When Gu Ningning came back in the morning, she had told Mother Gu everything that had happened at the threshing ground.
Gu Zhi was touched when she heard it, and she grew fonder and fonder of Su Niannian.
“I feel like… this change in Second Brother is really probably because of Sister Niannian!” Gu Ningning said like a little adult, hands on her hips, looking at Gu Nan.
“Don’t let these words get out. Niannian has been so good to our family. We can’t let anything affect her reputation.”
In this generation, reputation is especially important for a girl.
“But, I saw Second Brother sneaking smiles at Sister Niannian this morning,” Gu Ningning thought for a moment and continued.
“I feel like when Second Brother looks at Sister Niannian, there’s a spark in his eyes! I’ve never seen him like this before.”
Actually, Mother Gu couldn’t help but wish that Su Niannian, this little girl, could be with her son.
However, with their current situation, they truly weren’t a good match for Su Niannian.
But, leaving aside the family background, in her heart, her son was truly outstanding.
If Su Niannian could look past everything else and be with Gu Nan, it would really be a blessing from their ancestors!
At this point, Gu Nan had already cleaned himself up and changed into a fresh set of clothes.
In the courtyard, there were still quite a few wooden planks stacked up, all to be used for making a wardrobe for Su Niannian.
Now that he had the time, Gu Nan was determined to quickly make the wardrobe that Su Niannian wanted.
If… that Song Zhaodi weren’t a man, Gu Nan might have even been able to make a wardrobe for him too.
Before long, the wardrobe at Gu Nan’s side had already taken shape.
Gu Nan had been to that educated youth station before, so he knew that the space inside was not very large. Therefore, he strictly followed the measurements that Su Niannian had given him and didn’t make it any bigger.
He was also worried that if he made it too large, there wouldn’t be enough space to place it.
On Su Niannian’s side, she was still pulling weeds in the field.
“You don’t have to work so hard. I’ll help you more later,” Song Zhaodi said to Su Niannian.
The sun was simply too hot, and seeing Su Niannian’s little face now flushed red, Song Zhaodi felt a bit sorry for her.
Su Niannian looked up and saw that this row was nearly finished; it should be worth three work points.
“I’ll just take three work points for today. There’s still this last row left,” Su Niannian wasn’t trying to take advantage of Song Zhaodi.
In fact, Song Zhaodi felt that she owed Su Niannian too much. If she didn’t let Song Zhaodi help with even this small amount of work, she feared that Su Niannian would feel uneasy about accepting anything from her in the future.
“It’s a small thing. You go ahead and rest for now, and I’ll help you in a bit,” Song Zhaodi waved her hand to tell Su Niannian to go rest under the shade of the tree.
“Just don’t do too much. I only need three work points each day, that’s enough. I’ll leave lunch for you here. I’m going to check on how our two wardrobes are coming along.”
Su Niannian left two cornmeal buns and some pickles, along with a pot of water, for Song Zhaodi, and gave her a quick heads-up.
Then, with a cheerful smile, she walked away.
Cornmeal buns were much better than the black flatbreads or buckwheat flatbreads that others ate.
Not to mention, with the added sugar and fresh spring water, it was more than enough to help Song Zhaodi regain her strength.
With her basket on her back, Su Niannian happily headed towards Gu Nan’s house.
By the time Su Niannian arrived at Gu Nan’s place, Gu Zhi had just finished preparing lunch.
Gu Zhi quickly called Su Niannian over for lunch.
She had made a simple dish: a small bok choy soup, some braised meat from yesterday, and steamed white rice.
Because Gu Nan had mentioned that Su Niannian would be coming, Gu Zhi thought that since Su Niannian had been in the countryside for the past few days, she probably hadn’t had a chance to eat rice, so she made some for her.
“Thank you, Auntie!” Su Niannian smiled with crescent eyes and helped scoop the rice.
“You’re being too polite, this rice was actually bought by you,” Gu Zhi said, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt that this young girl was thoughtful.
“I’ll scoop rice for Big Brother,” Gu Ningning said as she brought over a large bowl.
“I’ll do it,” Su Niannian said, taking the bowl from Gu Ningning’s hands.
She scooped a generous portion of rice into the bowl, then added a good amount of braised meat on top. Finally, she ladled a large spoonful of the braised meat’s sauce over it.
The sauce poured over the meat, giving it a glossy sheen, making it look even more appetizing.
She then filled a bowl with the bok choy soup and handed it to Gu Ningning.
“Big sister Niannian, I want to eat like this too!” Gu Ningning looked at the rice in her hand, unable to stop herself from swallowing a mouthful.
Su Niannian’s cooking skills were excellent; this braised meat over rice was even more delicious than the versions from the future.
Su Niannian smiled and nodded. Gu Ningning then went to deliver the meal to her older brother.
When Gu Ningning returned, the four of them sat together to eat. Su Niannian made another bowl of braised rice for Gu Ningning.
Every grain of rice was soaked in the braised meat’s sauce, and the fragrance filled the air. Gu Ningning ate without making a sound, thoroughly enjoying the meal.
There was rice and sauce at the corner of Gu Ningning’s mouth.
Su Niannian helped Gu Ningning wipe her mouth and reminded her to eat slowly.
Gu Zhi had a smile on her face as well.
“This braised pig’s offal tastes even better, really delicious,” Gu Ningning said with a smile, feeling very satisfied after eating.
“Since you like it, eat more. I’ll go to the county in a couple of days to buy some more and make it again,” Su Niannian smiled, happy that her cooking skills were being recognized.
Looking at Gu Nan, although he was lowering his head to eat, there was a smile at the corner of his mouth, which Su Niannian captured with pinpoint accuracy.
Su Niannian smiled even more happily.
Seeing the two of them like this, Gu Zhi felt that her suspicion had been almost confirmed.
She also had a smile on her face.
Since Su Niannian came to this house, the Gu family seemed different.
After they finished eating, Su Niannian checked Gu Zhi’s pulse.
She noticed that Gu Zhi’s condition had improved a lot, but it seemed to be progressing too quickly.
She wondered if she should dilute the spiritual spring water a bit more.
Otherwise, Su Niannian felt that, in just a few days, Gu Zhi’s condition might worsen significantly.
Last time when Su Niannian went to the county town, she wanted to buy a set of acupuncture needles, but they weren’t available there.
Now, it seemed like buying the needles wasn’t as urgent anymore. She could wait until the next time she went to the town to buy them, whenever that might be.
“How is mother’s condition?” Gu Nan asked when he noticed that Su Niannian had been silent for a while.
