Li Ergou even felt that his Big Brother Nan’s personality might very well lead him to remain single for life.
Soon, the three of them arrived at the Educated Youth site.
Li Ergou stopped the donkey cart at the courtyard of the site.
Then, he and Gu Nan moved the two cabinets into the room where Su Niannian was staying.
“Is it all done?” Song Zhaodi asked when she saw Su Niannian returning, bringing the two cabinets with her.
“Yes, fast and well done!” Su Niannian smiled as she replied.
As for Gu Nan’s excellence, Su Niannian never hesitated to praise him.
If it weren’t for Gu Nan not wanting to reveal their relationship so early, Su Niannian would have wanted to shout to the whole world that such an outstanding man was hers!
As Gu Nan moved the cabinets into the room, Huang Yingying’s teeth itched with frustration.
She clenched her silver teeth, biting and biting again.
The pencil in her hand was on the verge of breaking under her grip.
Though she was furious, she couldn’t show it.
She hurriedly poured a glass of water and brought it over to Gu Nan.
“Thank you for your hard work, have a drink of water.” Huang Yingying adjusted her facial expression, putting on a gentle look.
She walked over with the glass of water and stood in front of Gu Nan.
Gu Nan didn’t even glance at Huang Yingying. He put down the cabinet and, without a word, went to help Li Ergou move the other one.
This scene was also noticed by Su Niannian, who stood at the doorway watching.
Seeing that Gu Nan completely ignored her, Huang Yingying’s mood soured.
When she turned her head and saw Su Niannian standing there with her arms crossed, watching her with a smile on her lips, her anger flared up.
Once Gu Nan and Li Ergou finished placing Song Zhaodi’s cabinets, the two of them quickly came out.
“Niannian, how much was my cabinet? I’ll pay you for it,” Song Zhaodi said as she looked at her new cabinet, which was very neat and the wood looked quite nice. She was a little worried that it might be expensive.
In the countryside, the cabinets made were nothing like the ones made by the wealthy people in the city.
There was no need for paint, carvings, or any complicated designs, and certainly no glass or other decorations.
It was just a very simple cabinet made from a few wooden planks.
However, despite its simplicity, the wood used for this cabinet was still of better quality than the ones Huang Yingying and her group had.
She thought to herself that it would probably be a little more expensive.
Su Niannian really hadn’t asked Gu Nan how much Song Zhaodi’s cabinet cost.
She then looked toward Gu Nan.
“Just five yuan,” Gu Nan said. He didn’t want to take any money, but he and Su Niannian’s relationship hadn’t been made public yet.
Even if it were public, it wouldn’t be a problem for him not to take Su Niannian’s money, but not accepting money from the Educated Youth like Song Zhaodi might cause some trouble.
So, he decided to charge five yuan—not much, but it made it a little cheaper.
“Five yuan? That’s such a good deal! It’s really worth it!” Song Zhaodi was delighted when she heard it was only five yuan.
It was better than the ones Huang Yingying and the others had, and it was even cheaper. Their cabinets weren’t as good, yet they cost seven yuan fifty.
“Wait for me a moment, I’ll go inside and get the money.”
Song Zhaodi said this and went inside to get the money for Gu Nan.
Su Niannian also thought the price Gu Nan gave was very reasonable.
Song Zhaodi rummaged through her belongings in the room for a moment, then took out five yuan.
Huang Yingying watched this scene, but she knew that Song Zhaodi didn’t have much money.
So, she didn’t have any intentions of asking Song Zhaodi for money.
However, when it came to Su Niannian, she would have to come up with a plan.
It was obvious that Gu Nan treated Su Niannian differently than he treated her.
She couldn’t allow Su Niannian to get close to Gu Nan. This time, Huang Yingying was determined to win Gu Nan over.
A plan slowly began to take shape in Huang Yingying’s mind.
As Song Zhaodi handed the five yuan to Gu Nan, he took the money and was about to leave.
But he was stopped by Lu Xingguang.
“This cabinet you made isn’t bad. I also want one. Five yuan, right? I’ll pay you now,” Lu Xingguang said, looking at Gu Nan with disdain.
He really couldn’t stand how Gu Nan, this country bumpkin, was better-looking than him, and it seemed like Su Niannian liked to get close to Gu Nan.
Several times, Lu Xingguang had seen Su Niannian smile at Gu Nan. That smile… Su Niannian had never shown it to anyone else.
A country bumpkin whose family background wasn’t even good—Su Niannian must be blind to like someone like him, right?
If you used your toes to choose, you’d definitely pick yourself, right?
Thinking of his own family and his own conditions, Lu Xingguang stood up straight, his chest out, feeling superior.
Gu Nan glanced at Lu Xingguang, looked at the five yuan he handed over, and the annoying look on his face.
He really couldn’t be bothered with him.
With long strides, he walked away.
Meanwhile, Li Ergou, who was standing by, gave Lu Xingguang a smile that didn’t reach his eyes and spoke.
“You still want my brother Nan to make you a cabinet? Dream on!” Li Ergou said with a smug look, his hands behind his back as he walked over to the donkey cart, swinging his legs.
“What do you mean by that? You don’t want to earn money?”
Lu Xingguang had inquired about this village and the Hongxing Brigade. After the grain distribution, it was rare for a strong laborer to get more than ten or twenty yuan, which wasn’t easy at all.
How could she possibly look down on five yuan?
“The cabinets my brother Nan made aren’t something just anyone can use.” Li Ergou scoffed, settling onto the donkey cart.
With a flick of his small whip, he urged the donkey forward, leaving the Educated Youth Point behind.
Gu Nan quickly took two steps and sat down in the back of the donkey cart.
“You…you…” Lu Xingguang had originally intended to humiliate Gu Nan with the money.
Unexpectedly, the other party didn’t even look at his five yuan.
Lu Xingguang’s hand, holding the five yuan, froze.
Huang Yingying, witnessing this scene, was practically beside herself with anger!
What was going on with this Gu Nan? The information she had gathered clearly indicated he was a cold and aloof person.
Why would he make an exception and build cabinets for Su Niannian?
What kind of spell did Su Niannian cast on Gu Nan?
And Lu Xingguang too, how could she have fallen for such a person in her past life!
It’s like he has no brain.
The Educated Youths who had gathered to watch started whispering amongst themselves.
The older Educated Youths, in particular, were curious about Gu Nan’s sudden change of heart, wondering why he was helping Su Niannian.
“It’s probably because Su Niannian is pretty,” someone said.
“Or maybe Su Niannian wouldn’t look at Gu Nan, after all, his family background isn’t good, and Su Niannian is skilled in medicine; didn’t she save the village chief’s grandson this morning?” another chimed in.
“Hard to say, Gu Nan is quite handsome too,” a third voice added.
“Are you going to cook or not?” Song Zhaodi glared at them, hearing their hushed conversation in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Lu Xingguang, chopping wood not far away, was lost in thought.
He stole a glance at Su Niannian.
Su Niannian’s eyes were still on the donkey cart that was going away.
To be precise, she was looking at the person sitting on the donkey cart.
Lu Xingguang’s eyes were complicated, but he quickly concealed them and continued to chop wood.
Su Niannian watched Gu Nan go away, took the lunch box to the kitchen, and prepared to cook.
“Don’t pay attention to them, don’t care what they say.” Song Zhaodi came to Su Niannian’s side and said to her in a low voice.
