Sure enough, the crumbs from the cornbread led Su Niannian forward, pointing her in the right direction.
Su Niannian followed the trail of crumbs on the ground as she walked.
She left the Educated Youth camp and headed west.
There were a few abandoned houses in that direction.
A man’s figure appeared not far ahead.
Su Niannian had sharp eyesight. Before the man noticed her, she quickly hid behind a large tree nearby.
She got a clear look at the person walking by.
“Why is it him?” Su Niannian recognized the man—it was Qian Jun, who had come to Kaoshan Village together with Lu Xingguang.
In her previous life, she hadn’t paid much attention to Qian Jun.
All she knew was that he and Lu Xingguang were from the same place and had known each other before being sent down to the countryside.
Thinking about it now, it must have been Qian Jun and Huang Yingying who released the knockout smoke earlier.
After carrying Zhao Sulan—who had been in Su Niannian’s place—somewhere, Qian Jun had vanished.
That night, Lu Xingguang hadn’t shown up…
Things were already painfully clear—Lu Xingguang was definitely waiting over in one of those abandoned houses.
A smile curled at the corner of Su Niannian’s lips. She had pieced everything together.
Huang Yingying had prepared the knockout smoke, intending to render her unconscious. Then Qian Jun would carry her to the abandoned house, where Lu Xingguang was waiting.
They wanted to… ruin her. Once her purity was gone, no one would compete with Huang Yingying for Gu Nan anymore, and she would fall into becoming nothing more than Lu Xingguang’s plaything.
It truly was a well-laid scheme—so well-laid that the abacus beads had practically smashed against Su Niannian’s face.
They weren’t far from Gu Nan’s house now, and Su Niannian’s smile deepened.
“If we’re going to put on a grand performance,” she murmured, “then let’s make it a real spectacle.”
Following the trail of crumbs, Su Niannian confirmed the location of Lu Xingguang and Zhao Sulan.
Peering through a broken window, she caught the sounds coming from inside.
“This drug Huang Yingying found really works—no wonder it’s used for breeding sows.” Lu Xingguang’s voice was more lecherous than she had ever heard before.
Immediately after came the sound of fabric being torn.
They weren’t far from Gu Nan’s house now, and Su Niannian’s smile grew even colder.
Zhao Sulan’s voice followed—moaning about how hot she felt, how uncomfortable she was.
The sounds were brazen and lewd.
It seemed Huang Yingying, determined to leave nothing to chance, had even given the sow-breeding drug to the wrong person—Zhao Sulan, the one brought in for Lu Xingguang.
Truly… what a meticulous plan.
Su Niannian withdrew without a sound, her expression calm.
Without delay, she hurried toward Gu Nan’s house.
It was already quite late, but Su Niannian needed Gu Nan’s help.
The front gate of Gu Nan’s house was tightly shut, and no lights were on inside.
If she knocked now, she might wake the neighbors—and if anyone saw her appearing at Gu Nan’s house in the middle of the night, it would be hard to explain.
With that in mind, Su Niannian made a quick decision: she would climb over the wall.
It was only about one and a half meters high—not too difficult.
In this era, courtyard walls weren’t built very tall. The one around Gu Nan’s house had been renovated and was made of neatly stacked red bricks.
Many courtyard walls in people’s homes were surrounded by fences or branches and wooden slats.
The one at the educated youth site was made from random wooden slats, forming a simple barrier just over a meter high, making it even easier to climb over.
Su Niannian found a spot where the red bricks were slightly raised. She stepped on it with one foot, gripped the top of the wall with both hands, and swung herself up to sit on the edge of the wall before flipping over.
She nearly twisted her ankle when she landed.
Fortunately, Su Niannian’s body was still nimble. If it had been in her past life, she might have fallen.
Su Niannian moved carefully, heading toward Gu Nan’s room.
As expected, Gu Nan’s room wasn’t locked.
She pushed the door open and entered.
It was at that moment that she was suddenly yanked forward by a force.
“It’s me, it’s me,” Su Niannian quickly reassured him, worried that Gu Nan might think she was an intruder and act out of reflex.
After all, Gu Nan’s strength and reaction time were nothing to be taken lightly.
“I knew it.” Gu Nan pulled Su Niannian directly into his embrace.
He hadn’t been asleep the whole time.
When Su Niannian was climbing over the wall, he had already seen it from inside the room.
Seeing her come to find him in the middle of the night, Gu Nan felt a bit excited inside.
As he held her, Gu Nan wrapped his arms around Su Niannian’s waist.
He was about to lean in for a kiss.
Gu Nan, being a man, couldn’t help but feel a surge of desire when he had such a beautiful woman in his arms in the middle of the night.
“Gu Nan, I have something to tell you.” Su Niannian gently pushed him away.
In the moonlight, Gu Nan noticed that her expression was somewhat serious.
He guessed that there must be something important for her to come here so late at night.
He stopped what he was doing.
“Huang Yingying plans to use the sleeping drug to knock me out, then send me to a dilapidated house on the east side of your house. Lu Xingguang is waiting there, planning to… do this and that to me.”
Su Niannian quickly explained the situation, laying out the details of the plot against her.
In fact, just by being here, Su Niannian’s presence meant that the scheme to trap and harm her had already failed.
However, even with that knowledge, Gu Nan’s expression grew darker with each word Su Niannian spoke. His brows furrowed deeply, his fists clenched tighter with every passing moment.
In the darkness, his eyes gleamed with a cold, murderous light—one that sent a chilling sense of danger through the air.
Su Niannian could even hear the sound of his knuckles cracking under the pressure, the sharp, ominous noise echoing through the stillness of the night.
Gu Nan’s heart surged with an indescribable fury as he listened to Su Niannian’s words.
If it hadn’t been for her quick thinking—if she hadn’t sensed the problem and swapped positions with Zhao Sulan—then Zhao Sulan would have fallen prey to their plan.
If Su Niannian hadn’t been sharp enough to avoid falling into their trap and turned the tables on them…
Wouldn’t things have escalated into something far worse by now?
Su Niannian felt the intense coldness emanating from Gu Nan, the anger so palpable that it seemed to fill the room. His words were calm but carried a dangerous edge.
“Stay here. The rest is up to me.”
The way he said it left no room for argument. Su Niannian could see the determination in his eyes, and she knew that Gu Nan wasn’t someone to let this slide easily. There was no doubt in her mind that he was going to take action.
Gu Nan froze for a moment when Su Niannian stopped him, his expression shifting slightly. The fury in his eyes dimmed, but the intensity was still there, just waiting to explode.
Su Niannian’s words were firm and clear, and he could see the logic behind them. She was right. His impulsive actions could lead to consequences that they couldn’t afford, especially with his return to the military in mind.
He clenched his jaw, the anger still bubbling beneath the surface, but he nodded. “I understand.”
Su Niannian continued, “You need to stay calm. We’ll handle this carefully. I’ll go back to the youth camp and act as if I don’t know anything, while you send people to intercept them at the abandoned house. Make sure you don’t give in to rage. I need you to think clearly, Gu Nan. You have a future that can’t be tainted.”
Her words hit him hard. He knew she was right. Su Niannian was trying to protect him, and though he hated being held back, he couldn’t deny the wisdom in her advice. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to steady his nerves.
“Alright. I’ll follow your plan.”
He didn’t say more, but the dangerous gleam in his eyes promised that once this was over, there would be consequences for those who tried to harm Su Niannian.
Hearing Su Niannian’s words, Gu Nan’s mood calmed down slightly. He knew she was right. This wasn’t just an emotional reaction; it was a rational reminder.
“Alright, I understand,” Gu Nan said with a deep look in his eyes, his voice low and firm, as if he had made up his mind.
Su Niannian looked at Gu Nan, knowing he still felt angry, but she also understood that this was the only way he could calm down.
She patted Gu Nan’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything. The calmer you are, the more we can make sure they won’t be able to turn things around.”
Gu Nan was silent for a moment, then lightly withdrew his hand from her shoulder and nodded slightly. “Wait for you to return.”
Su Niannian nodded, then quickly turned and left. In her heart, she already had a plan. She knew the battle wasn’t over yet, and she had more tricks up her sleeve. Gu Nan’s calmness would be their only guarantee.
The tightly clenched fist loosened a little.
Gu Nan understood. Su Niannian certainly knew about his past in the army and also understood how much he longed to return to the military.
Not to mention that even if the problem with his family background couldn’t be resolved now, even if it could be solved, Su Niannian was more important than anything else.
