Chapter 20 Bullying Words
Educated Youth Office.
Ever since Song Youyou arrived, the eyes of the staff inside would occasionally fall on her. Most of them were filled with pity—what a delicate and beautiful young girl, yet she was about to be sent off to the countryside to do farm work every day.
But there was one gaze that was different—that of Lao Wu.
At that moment, Lao Wu was screaming in his heart: It really is Little Fairy Song!!
Lao Wu was one of the staff at the Educated Youth Office. A few days ago, when he found out that one of the reported individuals was named Song Youyou, he paid extra attention. At first, he thought it was just someone with the same name, but it turned out to really be her.
Tsk tsk, a little fairy is a little fairy after all. So many years had passed, yet she’d only grown more beautiful. Even though she was being reported, she spoke calmly and unhurriedly. Just standing quietly in the office, she became the center of attention, radiating a cool and aloof aura, as if she were above the mundane world.
Such a stunning beauty was actually taken by that bastard Gu Xiao—it made him so jealous he could scream!
“Since this is a real-name report, shouldn’t the informant also be required to provide evidence?” Song Youyou asked. When no one responded, she frowned slightly and looked at the strange staff member in front of her, adding coldly, “Isn’t that right?”
Her voice shifted from cool to icy, instantly freezing Lao Wu’s distracted thoughts and pulling him back to reality.
“Right, right, you’re absolutely right!”
“…”
“N-no, I mean, anyway, we’ve already sent someone to bring in the informant. This matter hasn’t been settled yet, so don’t worry!” Lao Wu chuckled awkwardly, trying to come across as friendly.
But Song Youyou only furrowed her brows even more and discreetly moved a step away from him. She felt this man’s smile was… rather sleazy.
Lao Wu, unaware of how she really saw him, was still showing what he thought was his most endearing smile.
Just then, a sharp voice came from the doorway.
“If Song Youyou’s the one being reported, why are you dragging me here?”
It was Song Baozhu’s voice—loud, but still betraying a guilty conscience.
“I’m warning you, my dad’s a high-ranking official. I’ve already sent someone to get my parents. Don’t think you can bully me just because I don’t understand policy!”
“Don’t worry, comrade. This is just a routine inquiry,” someone said calmly.
Song Baozhu snorted, but inside she was feeling very unsure. She’d always dreamed of becoming an official’s wife, but having grown up in a backward village, she’d always feared authority. Even now, living in the city, she still felt intimidated.
Meanwhile, at Song Father’s workplace, the organization’s cadres were conducting a background check. They were looking into his situation and gathering opinions from neighbors, relatives, and colleagues. If everything checked out, his promotion would be secured.
Song Father had already done the necessary greasing of palms and felt very confident.
“Old Song, the investigations with relatives, neighbors, and colleagues are all done. Congratulations—”
“Old Song! Old Song—!”
Before the lead cadre could finish, he was interrupted by an urgent voice.
“Old Song! Baozhu said someone took her away! Go save our daughter!”
It was Song Mother who barged in.
Song Father’s brow twitched, and he quickly tried to shush her. “Don’t shout!”
But the cadre had already heard her and immediately changed his tone. “Old Song, what happened to your daughter? Let’s go take a look together.”
Only then did Song Mother realize there were others in the office. Her heart sank, and she quickly waved her hand. “No, no, it’s just a family matter.”
“Family matters are also part of the organizational assessment. Comrade Song, shall we?” the lead cadre said blandly but firmly.
“You’re right,” Song Father nodded, though a bad feeling crept over him. He shot a dark look at his wife, who had just stirred up trouble, and asked in a low voice, “What did you just say? Baozhu was taken by whom?”
“Th-the Educated Youth Office…”
“The Educated Youth Office? Why would they take her?” Song Father was confused but could only follow them to find out what was going on.
And so, Song Father led a group of cadres in grand fashion toward the Educated Youth Office.
At first, Song Baozhu had been a little scared, but when she saw her father arriving with a whole group of people, she immediately gained confidence.
“This is my dad! My dad’s a top official!”
As soon as she uttered these arrogant words, Song Father’s brow twitched violently. He wished he could run up and cover the mouth of this idiot daughter of his.
The organizational cadre also gave her a strange look upon hearing that.
“You shut up!” Song Father mouthed the words at Song Baozhu in warning, but she didn’t even notice.
“Dad, they’re the ones who dragged me here! The one with no job who’s not participating in rural labor construction is Song Youyou. I kindly reported her, but they brought me in instead!”
“You were the one who reported her?” Song Father finally noticed Song Youyou sitting quietly nearby.
“Yes!”
“…”
Well then. After thinking for a moment, Song Father had a rough idea of what was going on. A report was fine—so long as it was true, there’d be no problem. That thought reassured him slightly.
“Comrade Song Youyou, are those the adoptive parents you’ve severed ties with?” the Educated Youth Office began their verification.
“Yes.” Song Youyou nodded.
“Your job was transferred to Comrade Song Baozhu, so currently you’re unemployed, correct?”
“No!”
Just as Song Youyou was about to shake her head and respond, a voice from the doorway answered even faster than she could.
