Chapter 1
Early spring in March 1971, in the city of Tanzhou, outside the provincial military district.
“Comrade, I’m a relative of Commander Lu, I have urgent business with him.”
Ruan Qiqi spoke weakly to the sentry on duty. She was wearing a red and black checkered tunic, her hair in two braids tied with red silk flowers, the most popular style for girls at the time.
“I’ll make a call to the Commander.”
The sentry was polite but didn’t let her through.
“I’m the granddaughter of Commander Lu’s third aunt, my name is Ruan Qiqi. It’s a matter of life and death, please!”
Ruan Qiqi’s tone and expression were sincere.
A jeep pulled up. The young man in the car heard her words, paused, and looked directly at Ruan Qiqi.
He could see her profile. Her face was as white and smooth as freshly steamed glutinous rice balls. Her eyes were big, her eyelashes long, her nose small and round, her red lips slightly pouted. She spoke slowly and softly, seeming like a pretty, timid girl.
But her words were a blatant lie.
The old man’s third aunt had died at the age of seven. How could she have a granddaughter?
Did she come from the underworld?
Lu Ye jumped out of the car and walked to Ruan Qiqi. Up close, the girl looked even whiter, her face devoid of any color. She really did look like she came from the underworld.
The sentry who was about to make a call saw him and said happily, “Deputy Battalion Commander Lu, this girl says she’s your relative, your third… aunt’s…”
“Third aunt’s granddaughter.”
Ruan Qiqi corrected him. She looked calmly at the young man in military uniform, almost whistling.
He was so damn handsome!
He looked just like her favorite male idol, Won Bin!
She suppressed the whistle, reminding herself for the hundred and eighth time that it was the 1970s, she couldn’t whistle at soldiers, she might get sent to labor reform, which was much harder than the mental hospital.
“What’s your name?” Lu Ye asked.
“Ruan Qiqi, Ruan as in the surname, Qiqi as in the number seven.”
Ruan Qiqi used a simple explanation. The young sentry’s expression was speechless.
He had never heard anyone introduce their name like that, and didn’t she find it unlucky?
Lu Ye’s eyes became interested. He met Ruan Qiqi’s gaze for a few seconds, and they both confirmed it at almost the same time: they were the same kind.
“I’ll take her in.”
Lu Ye said to the sentry.
“Register her.”
The sentry didn’t doubt Ruan Qiqi’s identity. After all, she was certified by Commander Lu’s own son.
Ruan Qiqi registered and got into Lu Ye’s car. She leaned back in the seat and closed her eyes, resting. She had to conserve her energy, she had a big battle ahead.
Three days ago, she was still Ruan Qiqi, a 26-year-old in the 21st century. She had been in a mental hospital for ten years, and was happy to be discharged. She was ready to go home and enjoy the happy life of a spoiled child. But she had only enjoyed it for a week. Her spicy fish snacks were all gone, so she went to the supermarket near her home to buy more. She found that there was a long queue of elderly people, and the number of people in line was still increasing.
She was curious about everything, even a dog peeing on the side of the road, she would stop to see if it was peeing with its legs raised or squatting. Seeing such a long queue, her two legs involuntarily joined the line.
Then a supermarket worker with a loudspeaker came and shouted, “Line up for rice, don’t fight!”
Before the words were out, the elderly people were like they had seen gold ingots, their eyes red as they rushed forward. They even pushed her aside, and she lost her balance and hit her head on the ground.
As she breathed her last, she finally understood that curiosity would not only kill the cat, but also kill people.
When her soul arrived in the underworld, she learned that the two ox-headed and horse-faced figures who had hooked her were newly appointed idiots. They were supposed to hook a 62-year-old woman with the same name as her, one of the people who had pushed her.
As a result, the two idiots hooked her, a 26-year-old in her prime. When they realized their mistake, her body in the mortal world had already been efficiently cremated by her parents. She couldn’t go back.
Moreover, the underworld had been busy in recent years, and the reincarnation orders were scheduled for five years later. She was not even on the list. So, she had two options.
Either be reincarnated as an animal.
Or stay in the underworld as a ghost.
She didn’t want to choose either option. She just wanted to be a living person who could eat snacks and watch dramas.
The King of Hell severely punished the two idiot ox-headed and horse-faced figures. He also softly comforted her, promising that she would be reincarnated into a wealthy and prosperous family in five years. She didn’t believe him. Officials always said things that were half-truths. It was better to ask for immediate benefits than to believe unrealistic promises.
So, she used the skills she had learned in the mental hospital to make the underworld a chaotic mess, with ghosts crying and howling. The big and small ghosts couldn’t stand her, and they went to complain to the King of Hell every day. The King of Hell, who hadn’t had a headache for a thousand years, was so worried that he had a relapse.
The King of Hell had no choice but to agree to give her benefits. She would have the space necessary for time travel, and she would have a golden finger. She would also have a life-saving elixir.
She was lucky. There was a soul that was about to be reborn, and it was the original Ruan Qiqi, who was heartbroken. She didn’t want to be reborn, so she gave her chance to Ruan Qiqi. The original Ruan Qiqi stayed in the underworld as a ghost, waiting to be reincarnated in five years.
Then she was transported to the 1970s, a poor rural girl who had been cheated by a scumbag. Her parents were dead, she had no brothers or younger brothers, only an older sister and a younger sister, and her neighbor’s uncle’s family was eyeing her family’s property, wanting to take advantage of their situation.
Two years ago, the original Ruan Qiqi had been engaged to the scumbag. They had agreed that he would marry into her family. However, the scumbag met the Commander’s granddaughter in the army, and soon they became deeply in love. He only called the original Ruan Qiqi to tell her that he wanted to break off the engagement.
When Ruan Qiqi arrived, the original Ruan Qiqi had just received the scumbag’s call to break off the engagement. She was heartbroken and fainted. Ruan Qiqi happened to be there, and she understood why the original Ruan Qiqi didn’t want to be reborn.
There were wolves in front and tigers behind, almost everyone around her was evil, the situation was dangerous, and the signs were ominous. Even if the original Ruan Qiqi was reborn, she couldn’t fight against those evil people.
But Ruan Qiqi was not afraid.
Even the evil ghosts in the underworld couldn’t do anything to her. How could she be afraid of these mere evil people?
Moreover, she had a golden finger, but she couldn’t use it yet. The King of Hell said that she could use it three days after she arrived. It was still three hours before the three days were up.
The original Ruan Qiqi had also come to the army to find the scumbag, but she was deceived by his sweet words. She thought that he was really forced to do it, and that his relationship with the Commander’s granddaughter was just a pretense. The scumbag also promised that he would definitely marry her, and the original Ruan Qiqi believed him. She obediently went back to the guest house to wait, and she didn’t even enter the military district.
As a result, she was taken advantage of by a group of hooligans. These hooligans were called by the Commander’s granddaughter’s younger brother. They took advantage of the original Ruan Qiqi, and they spread rumors in her hometown, saying that she was a prostitute in the city and had slept with several men.
Rumors spread throughout the village. When the original Ruan Qiqi went out, people would scold her and throw stones at her. People would also often come to her door to throw feces. Her neighbor’s uncle’s family also took advantage of her misfortune. The original Ruan Qiqi was desperate and jumped into the river to commit suicide.
The original Ruan Qiqi’s ghost floated in the mortal world for several years. She saw her older sister and younger sister die tragically, her family’s property was taken by her uncle, and the people who hurt her lived a prosperous life. The only good person who helped her was retaliated against. He was tricked during a mission and suffered a serious head injury. He had to leave the army and suffered from increasing mental instability due to intracranial hematoma. He could no longer take care of himself.
The original Ruan Qiqi was angry and resentful. She understood that she was limited in her abilities. Even if she was reborn again, she couldn’t fight against those evil people. So she made an exchange with Ruan Qiqi and asked her to promise her three conditions.
First, to avenge her and punish the bad guys.
Second, to save the good person who helped her.
Third, to go to the Workers’, Peasants’, and Soldiers’ University.
The three conditions were not excessive, and Ruan Qiqi agreed. She successfully arrived in this world, and she also caught the crucial moment when the scumbag was breaking off the engagement.
Ruan Qiqi still came to the army. She had to break off the engagement, but she wanted to make a big scene in the army, so that the scumbag couldn’t stay there.
Her principle in life:
Whoever makes her life difficult, she will ruin them!
The car stopped. Ruan Qiqi opened her eyes and felt much better. She had been feeling weak because of motion sickness. She had come to the provincial capital by bus, and there were chickens, ducks, geese, and even a piglet on the bus.
The various smells of poop on the bus, combined with the smell of gasoline and the body odor of someone who hadn’t showered in a winter, had a fatal magical attack on her. The five-hour journey to the provincial capital had almost made her go see the King of Hell again.
“You’re looking for Commander Lu to cause trouble, aren’t you?”
Lu Ye asked directly, his eyes shining.
“Yes, I’m going to hang myself!”
Ruan Qiqi told the truth.
When she first saw this man, she knew he was a madman, and he wouldn’t stop her.
Sure enough, Lu Ye’s eyes shone even brighter. He jumped out of the car and opened the door on the other side for her, smiling at her in a very flirtatious way.
