Chapter 26 : It’s better to scold him!
Ye Suiwan really had no idea about any of this, and by the time she woke up, it was already past four o’clock.
She lay in bed without getting up, her mind replaying every detail of her past life, trying to find clues about who had been colluding with Liu Suxia.
She couldn’t recall exactly what had led to the Ye family’s downfall, but as she thought about it, a few pieces of paper flashed through her mind.
Could it be that some documents had been secretly placed there?
But only she and her father had the key to his study. Even her two brothers couldn’t enter.
What had she done?
Ye Suiwan wasn’t sure at all. In her previous life, she had been dazed and confused. If Sun Qianqian had taken advantage of that opportunity to do something, she might not have noticed.
And if she remembered correctly, after she got into trouble, Jiang Sui was the first one recommended for the military and later sent to the military academy. Meanwhile, Sun Qianqian had returned to the capital before the Ye family’s home was searched and confiscated, securing a position in the Propaganda Department of the Revolutionary Committee.
The Ye family wasn’t destroyed immediately after Ye Suiwan’s return. She remembered the timeline, it wasn’t long after her miscarriage when Sun Qianqian returned, and then the Ye family faced utter ruin.
The whole thing had taken less than a year.
Was it really her stupidity that had brought disaster upon the Ye family?
But no matter what had happened in her past life, in this life, there was absolutely no way Sun Qianqian would be able to return to the city!
As for Liu Suxia, she had been kicked out of the Ye family and forced to rely on Sun Qianqian. Naturally, mother and daughter should share their “blessings” together.
She had a feeling that Wang Erniu and the people in town would be quite welcoming to them.
As for Liu Suxia’s external support, she had no clue. Even Xiao Yuyan’s investigation hadn’t turned up anything.
Either she had guessed wrong, and it really was just Liu Suxia and her daughter plotting, or the person behind them was hiding very well, someone whose power was comparable to the Ye family’s but not necessarily greater.
That narrowed down the list quite a bit.
Thinking of this, she sat up, walked to her dressing table, took out a pen and paper, and wrote down some of her suspicions about different families.
Looking at the dozen or so names in her hand, she smirked.
No matter who it was, this time, she would strike first. If someone was willing to use such underhanded tactics to deal with their opponent, there would definitely be others eager to take them down as well.
She had to find Jiang Sui for this. He had plenty of shady friends in Beijing.
Thinking about it, even though she was considered the prettiest girl in the compound, she really didn’t have many friends, especially female friends.
Damn it, was this Sun Qianqian’s fault again?
Ye Suiwan suddenly felt like she had been blind in her past life. She had never seen through her before. Now, thinking back, she felt like her mind had been clouded, as if something had been preventing her from seeing the truth.
Did Sun Qianqian have something on her?
Ye Suiwan’s head hurt just thinking about it.
Forget it. She would deal with it later. At least now, she felt much clearer.
She checked the time, it was almost the end of the workday. Time to start cooking dinner.
She made a pot of tomato and egg soup, along with multi-grain vegetable pancakes.
Most of the food people brought out these days was whole grain flour, and she happened to have some mixed-grain flour in her room from the brigade’s ration when she first arrived. Jiang Sui had ground it into flour for her.
Might as well use it all now.
The multi-grain flour in the kitchen was just enough for a porridge-like meal, nowhere near enough to make a dry dough.
She took out six eggs, using three for the soup and three for kneading the dough. Soon, the pancakes were ready.
Since she was the only one cooking dinner something she had already arranged with Qin Fang, she used whatever seasonings she wanted without worrying about anyone seeing.
When the first pancake came out, Ye Suiwan was stunned. She hadn’t expected it to smell this good.
She couldn’t resist tearing off a piece and popping it into her mouth.
The coarse grains had a rich, natural aroma. With the addition of eggs and vegetables, the texture was softer, making them delicious even on their own.
One pancake per person, a bowl of soup, and some stir-fried vegetables this was going to be a satisfying meal.
In the end, she made 14 pancakes and secretly stored three of them in her space.
Xiao Yuyan would definitely be back tonight, so she could bring some home for her aunt and Nuannuan.
After finishing everything, Ye Suiwan was about to wash her hands when Zhou Jingjing suddenly ran in.
“Suiwan! Suiwan! Let’s go….wait, wow, that smells amazing!”
“Where are we going?”
Seeing Zhou Jingjing practically sticking her head into the kitchen, Ye Suiwan asked.
“To the threshing floor to see how they’re dividing the pork.”
“You know, Jiang Sui and your man went out hunting together. They said it was to help everyone recover their strength, but obviously, it was all for you!”
Zhou Jingjing smirked mischievously.
The words “your man” instantly made Ye Suiwan feel warm inside.
“Oh, alright then!”
“But I’ve already prepared dinner. Let’s bring it back and eat it tomorrow!”
Ye Suiwan had no idea about the pork. Jiang Sui hadn’t told her, or maybe she had just been sleeping too deeply to hear the knock on the door.
Oh well, might as well go now!
She understood their intentions, and the thought of it made her feel a little embarrassed. In this life, she would cherish and repay those who treated her well.
“Yeah, save it for later. It’s hot now anyway, it’ll be better when it cools down.”
Zhou Jingjing laughed as she dragged her out.
At the threshing floor, the butcher was already preparing the meat.
“Quiet! Quiet!”
“Let me say a few words!”
The captain’s loud voice silenced the crowd.
“According to the rules, each family gets 20 kilograms of the wild boar, but our Xiao family boy and Jiang Sui volunteered to divide it equally among everyone. This is also their way of thanking you all for helping to find someone a few days ago. If you see Ye Suiwan in the future, please look out for her. Of course, we should always help each other whenever anyone is in trouble.”
“Alright, line up and take your share! Take it home quickly and enjoy dinner!”
The captain waved his hand, and the crowd erupted into cheers, just like during the New Year’s pig slaughter.
Normally, the educated youth received their meat last, but this time, for the first time ever, they got theirs earlier.
Song Kai went up to collect it on behalf of their group.
With this much meat, they would be able to eat well for quite a while.
“Alright, let’s go back!”
Zhou Jingjing said excitedly as she eyed the fresh meat.
She didn’t actually need any, but let’s be honest meat always tasted better when you didn’t have to pay for it!
“Yeah, let’s go back and eat.”
“I wonder how they’ll preserve it. They probably won’t have any until the autumn harvest.”
Ye Suiwan mused.
“It seems like Miao Yan knows how to smoke and cure meat, she’s from Hunan.”
Zhou Jingjing had more connections among the educated youth, so she knew these things.
“Then I’ll learn from her too.”
Ye Suiwan decided.
“Let’s go!”
As the educated youth carried their meat back, Ye Suiwan spotted Jiang Sui and called out, “Thank you, Jiang Sui!”
“You’re sick!”
Jiang Sui grumbled unhappily.
A simple “thank you” made him feel uneasy.
So Ye Suiwan kicked him.
Okay, now he felt better.
