Chapter 27 : She didn’t want to scare Jiang Sui to death.

As soon as they entered the gate of the educated youth site, the people in front started chatting and laughing.  

“Wow, it smells so good! Let’s eat!”  

“I suddenly feel a little reluctant to get married at the end of the year!”  

“I’ll cook for you every day even if I don’t marry you!”  

“Hahaha, I’m just saying!”

Dinner was finally served, and Ye Suiwan was indeed quite hungry.  

At the dinner table, when everyone saw the egg soup and the pancakes in their hands, they immediately understood the situation.  

“I have a suggestion. We’ve been eating well these past two days, all thanks to Ye Suiwan. How about we prepare the pork we got today and save it for the autumn harvest?”  

Song Kai proposed after dinner.  

The autumn harvest was a major event and also the most exhausting time of the year. Without enough fat in their stomachs, it would be tough to get through it.  

Everyone understood this, except for the four newly arrived educated youths Ye Suiwan, Jiang Sui, Zhou Jingjing, and another male educated youth, Hao Yong who had yet to experience it. Of course, there was also Sun Qianqian, but she was no longer part of the group, so she naturally didn’t count.  

Zhou Jingjing glanced at Ye Suiwan, silently confirming that her guess was correct.  

“My share will be given to everyone. I agree!”  

“I agree!”  

“We both agree.”  

The four newcomers expressed their opinions one after another.  

“Alright, then Miao Yan, you should be the one to make the bacon.”  

Song Kai turned to Miao Yan.  

“Okay, leave it to me.”  

Miao Yan happened to be sitting next to Ye Suiwan, and she quietly asked, “What’s the difference between smoked meat and bacon?”  

“Well, bacon is directly salted and then either roasted or air-dried, while smoked meat is slow-cooked with seasonings added to the meat, and then finally smoked using pine or wood.”  

“Our stomachs are lacking oil and fat. Once bacon is cooked, it turns glossy and greasy because of its high fat content!”  

“So, before the autumn harvest, meat is made into smoked meat, and if there’s an abundance of meat during the New Year, it’s made into bacon.”  

Miao Yan explained patiently, though she wasn’t entirely sure if she was correct.  

Ye Suiwan listened with great curiosity.  

“Then call me when you’re making it. I want to learn from you.”  

“Ah, you want to learn? Sure!”  

“I learned how to smoke meat and make bacon from my grandmother. Even though I haven’t had many chances to make it since we don’t get much meat, I guarantee the taste is better than most!”  

Miao Yan spoke enthusiastically, but a hint of sadness flashed in her eyes. Her grandmother had already passed away. Life at home had been much better when her grandmother was still alive.  

“Yes, I want to learn. I’ll even pay tuition fees!”  

Ye Suiwan smiled.  

After dinner, Ye Suiwan called Jiang Sui aside.  

“Here, help me find someone in Beijing to keep an eye on Liu Suxia and see which families and individuals she is closely associated with.”  

“I hope to have news before I return to Beijing so I can have them come directly to me and report.”  

Ye Suiwan spoke seriously, the coldness in her eyes sending a chill down Jiang Sui’s spine, despite it being the middle of summer.  

“What happened?”  

Jiang Sui couldn’t shake the feeling that Ye Suiwan had changed, as if she was carrying a heavy burden.  

The innocent and carefree girl who once only cared about eating, drinking, and looking pretty was gone.  

But he didn’t dare ask too much.  

“Liu Suxia is a venomous snake. I’m afraid she’ll harm the Ye family. Hasn’t her daughter already made a move? I’m just taking advantage of the situation.”  

Ye Suiwan spoke calmly.  

There was nothing more she could say. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to, but there was no way to explain how she knew.  

She couldn’t exactly say she had been reborn!  

She didn’t want to scare Jiang Sui to death.  

But the more secretive she was, the more serious the matter seemed.  

“Alright, leave it to me. If you need anything else, just tell me. Your second brother isn’t around, so it’s my responsibility to take care of you.”  

Jiang Sui stuffed the piece of paper into his pocket, already thinking about making a phone call and sending a telegram tomorrow.  

Judging from Ye Suiwan’s expression, it was urgent.  

“Okay, I won’t be polite with you then.”  

“Tomorrow, Xiao Yuyan and I are going to the county town to buy some wedding supplies. Do you need anything?”  

After finishing the serious conversation, Ye Suiwan relaxed a little, and her tone carried a hint of anticipation.  

“No, I don’t need anything. I have a wedding gift for you. Come with me and get it now!”  

“And also you’re really shameless, rushing to get married so soon!”  

Jiang Sui teased as he wrapped an arm around Ye Suiwan’s shoulders, leading her towards the dormitory.  

“Jiang Sui, let go of me! I’m not a child anymore. Why are you dragging me like this?”  

Ye Suiwan was exasperated.  

“Haha, but you’re acting like one right now!”  

Still, Jiang Sui let go after only a few steps, he didn’t want to risk getting beaten up.  

“Wait here. I’ll go inside and get it.”  

With that, he ran into the dormitory and came out carrying a large bag.  

“Here, these are all food and daily necessities, consider them part of your dowry!”  

“No money. I don’t want any money.”  

Ye Suiwan said cautiously.  

“No, your second brother gave you the money. You wouldn’t take it if it were from me.”  

“Go back now!”  

Jiang Sui finally realized something was off about Ye Suiwan.  

She seemed more cautious, but with that cautiousness came a sudden maturity.  

The Ye family probably wouldn’t want to see her like this. She must have gone through something significant.  

Never mind, he would find out sooner or later.  

“Alright, when I get married, come to the Xiao family’s house for dinner. I’ll cook for you myself.”  

“Also, after I leave with the army, ask your family to arrange for you to enlist as well!”  

“This isn’t the place for you.”  

She knew that Jiang Sui had come to the countryside partly because of family reasons, but another major reason was to take care of her.  

Now that she was getting married, his problems could be solved by joining the army.  

Jiang Sui thought for a moment and nodded.  

“Alright. Once you leave with the army, Sun Qianqian must…”  

Jiang Sui made a gesture of slitting his throat.  

“Leave her to me. I’ll handle it. I’ll let you know if I need anything. She and I are sworn enemies, but it’s better to let her destroy herself rather than dirty your hands.”  

Ye Suiwan said coldly.  

“Alright, go to bed early. I’ll go to town during my lunch break tomorrow. Don’t worry.”  

Jiang Sui thought for a moment and agreed.  

“Okay, I have absolute faith in you. Goodnight~”  

With that, Ye Suiwan ran off with her bag.
