Chapter 28: This Girl’s a Little Fierce!
Yu Linglong’s face flushed with anger.
“You’re talking nonsense! He is a good match for me! I’m prettier than you, I have a better figure, I sing beautifully, and I’m the lead singer of the art troupe!”
Her confidence was as boundless as the sun in the sky.
“So what if you can sing? Is that something to brag about? And as for your looks, you’re just so-so.”
Wen Yanyan responded with disdain.
She had been a karaoke queen at New Century University. Had she been proud?
From high school to university, she had been the school beauty. Had she been proud?
“You!”
Yu Linglong’s face turned pale with anger. “You, you’re nothing!”
“Fine, you’re everything. Okay? I have things to do, I don’t have time to bicker with you.”
Wen Yanyan turned to leave, but Yu Linglong stopped her.
“Don’t go! You have to promise me today that you’ll divorce him.”
Divorce your grandpa! (This is an idiom expressing strong disagreement.)
“What business is it of yours? Were you raised on seawater? Why do you meddle so much?”
Wen Yanyan remained patient.
“Nan Tuan likes me.”
Yu Linglong dropped another bombshell.
My god.
Wen Yanyan was startled. Without the original owner’s memories, she might have believed it. This girl was a little fierce.
Seeing no one around, she lowered her voice.
“Don’t talk nonsense. Don’t ruin Nan Tuan’s reputation just to satisfy your momentary anger.”
“Does Nan Tuan’s reputation need me to ruin it? You’ve already ruined it completely.”
Yu Linglong continued her emotional outburst.
Wen Yanyan stated frankly,
“I won’t explain the past, but I won’t ruin him again in the future. I’ll reiterate, my affairs are none of your business. Understand? Mind your own business. Get out of my way, I have things to do!”
With that, she shoved Yu Linglong aside and walked away.
“Even if you don’t believe it, it’s still true! He even gave me a book! You uncouth fat woman!”
Yu Linglong shouted from behind.
What?
A book?
Wen Yanyan paused. It seemed things weren’t as simple as she thought. Could they… really be having an affair?
Her heart was in turmoil, her steps slowing…
Suddenly,
“Yanzi, where are you going?”
Someone called out to her.
Wen Yanyan looked up. It was Zhang Huping, Sister Ping, the wife of Deputy Battalion Commander Zhao from the military region.
“Sister Ping, I… I want to go to town to sell… to mail some dried mushrooms to my hometown.”
She almost blurted out the truth about selling mushrooms – a prohibited activity in this era – thankfully correcting herself in time.
“You’re going to town? I’m going too. The commuter bus is over there. You’ve gone off course.”
“Oh, I didn’t notice. How did I end up walking this way?”
Wen Yanyan changed her mind. She suddenly didn’t want to run anymore and decided to take the bus with Sister Ping.
On the bus, she sat beside Sister Ping, still thinking about Yu Linglong’s last words.
“Yanzi, are you feeling down?”
The experienced Sister Ping quickly noticed something was wrong.
“No, I’m probably about to get my period. I don’t feel well.”
Wen Yanyan didn’t want to tell the truth.
“Oh, it’s tough being a woman. Do you have brown sugar at home? You can make some brown sugar water to dispel the cold.”
Zhang Huping empathized.
“Mm, I’ll buy some later. Sister Ping, do you know Yu Linglong?”
Wen Yanyan, noticing few people on the bus, whispered her question.
“I do. She’s a straightforward girl. Why do you ask?”
Zhang Huping was curious.
“I heard she sings very well.” Wen Yanyan pretended to be a fan.
“Oh, yes, she’s the daughter of the art troupe director. Maybe she inherited it from her father. She has a beautiful voice, like a nightingale. I’ve seen her perform.”
“How old is she?”
Wen Yanyan wanted to know more about this potential rival.
“About… twenty… twenty-one, I think.”
Sister Ping wasn’t quite sure.
Wen Yanyan nodded. Three years older than her, her age is quite close to Nan Jue’s.
Sigh, frustrating.
Half an hour later, the commuter bus finally stopped, and they got off in town.
Zhang Huping hadn’t even stood still when…
“Sister Ping, I have a stomachache. I need to use the restroom. You go ahead, I’ll be right back.”
Wen Yanyan, anxious to sell the dried mushrooms, made an excuse and ran off.
“Oh, slow down, there’s no hurry. I’ll wait for you here.”
Zhang Huping, seeing how fast she ran, couldn’t help but smile. This girl was in a real hurry.
Unexpectedly, this seemingly plump girl ran quite fast, disappearing in a flash.
She had grown increasingly fond of this girl lately. She never imagined Wen Yanyan would change so much, becoming a completely different person.
