Chapter 130: You Cry
After washing up at night, Yu Xiangnian was alone in the bedroom, while Cheng Jingmo and Xiao Jie were in the living room.
Xiao Jie asked worriedly, “Uncle, haven’t you managed to make Aunt happy yet?”
This morning, he had noticed his uncle sleeping on the folding bed.
Cheng Jingmo, with a cool expression, replied, “I don’t know how to make her happy.”
Xiao Jie suggested, “Give her something she likes.”
Last time when his aunt went to Shanghai and didn’t come back, they were very angry. But once she returned with gifts, they were instantly happy.
Cheng Jingmo thought about it and said, “That makes sense.”
The next day, after dropping Xiao Jie off at Mr. Li’s for lessons, he hurried to the department store.
He had never given a gift to a girl before and had no idea what to buy.
He considered getting a lipstick, but the last one he gave Yu Xiangnian didn’t seem to be appreciated.
He had secretly checked that lipstick recently and saw it was still unused, brand new.
After looking around, he found a woolen hat.
It was winter, and with Yu Xiangnian riding a bike, it would keep her head warm.
But he struggled with the color choice: one was red, and the other was dark brown.
He thought the dark brown looked better, so he chose the red one!
Imagining Yu Xiangnian wearing the hat, his mood, which had been low for several days, lifted slightly.
He paid for it without hesitation, picked up Xiao Jie, and hurried home excitedly.
However, Xiao Jie’s next words made his briefly uplifted mood plummet even further.
Xiao Jie said, “Uncle, Rui Rui told me that Aunt bought a house in the city yesterday, and they had dinner together at the state-run restaurant.”
Cheng Jingmo remembered how Yu Xiangnian had previously mentioned wanting to earn a lot of money, buy a big house, and move out.
He didn’t expect her to have saved enough money in just over half a year to buy a house.
Her next step would be to go to Beijing for her studies and then leave him to find a man with an eight-pack.
Thinking of this, Cheng Jingmo was so angry his body trembled!
No wonder Yu Xiangnian was so adamant about the divorce!
All this time, she was just toying with him before leaving!
She played with his true feelings and emotions!
When she was in a good mood, she teased him, and when she wasn’t, she could leave anytime.
He was like a dog she kept, coming and going at her whim!
Cheng Jingmo abruptly stopped his bike, causing Xiao Jie, sitting on the back seat, to bump into his back.
“Uncle, what’s wrong?”
“I need a break,” Cheng Jingmo got off the bike, “You get off too and wait for me.”
He was afraid that if he went back now, he wouldn’t be able to control his temper and would argue with Yu Xiangnian!
He parked the bike, stood by the roadside, and looked at the distant mountains, taking deep breaths.
He hated himself for knowing Yu Xiangnian could never be his but still holding onto foolish hopes.
He hated himself for being prepared for divorce from the day they married but now lacking the courage to face it.
He hated himself even more for repeatedly reminding himself that Yu Xiangnian could never truly like him, yet still falling deeply into her trap.
After more than half an hour, Cheng Jingmo calmed down and took Xiao Jie home.
Naturally, the hat wasn’t given. As soon as he got home, he put it in his box.
He no longer tried to speak to Yu Xiangnian.
Despite his insecurity, he was proud and wouldn’t allow himself to grovel for Yu Xiangnian’s favor.
Yu Xiangnian, who never paid much attention to Cheng Jingmo’s situation and because Cheng Jingmo didn’t show his emotions, didn’t notice his change in mood.
In a blink, six days passed.
According to their agreement, Yu Xiangnian brought the money to the homeowner’s place.
The homeowner had already moved out all their belongings, so she just needed to clean up and move in.
After paying the remaining balance, the house was hers.
She planned to discuss the divorce procedures with Cheng Jingmo that evening.
As for the shared family funds, if Cheng Jingmo agreed to give her half, they would split it. If not, she’d let it go.
After all, she hadn’t saved a single cent of her earnings into the family’s joint funds.
When she got home, Cheng Jingmo and Xiao Jie were not back yet.
Looking at the place she had lived in for six months, Yu Xiangnian felt reluctant to leave.
Thinking she would never come back here, she took one last walk around the compound.
Although most of the residents were gossip-loving chatterboxes, they were warm-hearted people.
Checking the time, she realized it was almost time to start dinner.
Yu Xiangnian decided to cook one last meal for Cheng Jingmo and Xiao Jie.
After several attempts to light the fire, she couldn’t get it going. Frustrated, she threw the matchstick aside, crouched at the stove’s door, and started crying.
She had been pretending to be fine for the past few days, eating, sleeping, and working as usual, but she was barely holding on.
The unlit fire was the last straw, breaking her resolve, and she couldn’t hold back her tears any longer.
It was impossible not to feel sad.
Cheng Jingmo had been kind to her, never letting her do any work, always accommodating her, bit by bit making her fall for him.
What completely won her over was Cheng Jingmo’s letter, where he said he would face life and death with her, never letting her feel lonely or scared.
But what made her despair was realizing that Cheng Jingmo’s kindness, his willingness to accommodate her, and his promise to stay with her were all because he mistook her for the original Yu Xiangnian, not because she was herself!
“Yu Xiangnian, what’s wrong?”
Cheng Jingmo’s voice suddenly appeared beside her, startling Yu Xiangnian. She stayed still, covering her face.
Damn Cheng Jingmo, walking like a ghost without making a sound! Besides, why was he back so early?!
At that moment, she felt a mix of embarrassment and awkwardness at being caught by Cheng Jingmo, and also her own sadness and unwillingness.
But staying like this wasn’t a solution. After a struggle in her mind, Yu Xiangnian wiped her tears and lowered her head, preparing to leave.
She didn’t want Cheng Jingmo to see her like this.
She was the one who asked for a divorce, so what was she doing here, feeling sad and upset?!
As she passed by Cheng Jingmo, he grabbed her wrist.
“Yu Xiangnian, you were crying.” He stated.
Yu Xiangnian kept her head down, denying it, “No! I couldn’t light the fire and got smoked!”
“I saw you trembling from crying.”
“That was me shaking from anger!” Yu Xiangnian forcefully pulled her wrist free, “If you’re back, then hurry up and cook!”
Without warning, Cheng Jingmo cupped her face and turned it towards him.
Yu Xiangnian, embarrassed and angry, struggled to pull his hands away from her face.
But she couldn’t overpower Cheng Jingmo.
Cheng Jingmo asked, “You were crying, does that mean you don’t want to get a divorce either?”
