Chapter 136: Stay Well
Yu Xiangnian and Yu Xiangyang looked somewhat alike, and since Yu Xiangyang often mentioned he had a younger sister in front of Xia Qingyun, Xia Qingyun quickly realized that this person was Yu Xiangyang’s sister.
With a smile, Xia Qingyun walked over, extended her hand, and introduced herself, “Hello, I’m Xia Qingyun from the Cultural Troupe. You’re Yu Xiangyang’s sister, right?”
She had to admit that Yu Xiangyang had good taste.
Xia Qingyun was around twenty years old, with a heart-shaped face, arched eyebrows, and eyes that tilted upwards at the corners, giving her a naturally charming appearance.
Yu Xiangnian shook her hand and said, “Hello, I’m Yu Xiangnian.”
Xia Qingyun’s lips curved into a smile, and her eyes twinkled as she said, “I often hear Yu Xiangyang talk about you. He even mentioned introducing us one day. I didn’t expect we’d meet so soon.”
Her words seemed as if she were Yu Xiangyang’s official girlfriend, but Yu Xiangnian had never heard anyone at home mention Yu Xiangyang having a significant other.
Without confirmation from Yu Xiangyang, Yu Xiangnian wasn’t going to acknowledge Xia Qingyun’s claim.
She smiled and said, “Is that so? I haven’t heard Yu Xiangyang mention you.”
Yu Xiangnian expected Xia Qingyun to be a bit awkward after hearing this.
However, Xia Qingyun showed no sign of discomfort. She continued to smile charmingly and said, half-jokingly, “It might be because I’m often performing outside and rarely see him. He probably didn’t mention me to you.”
Xia Qingyun’s smile was even more enchanting, and her gentle gaze from her phoenix eyes seemed to captivate Yu Xiangnian. Even Yu Xiangnian felt somewhat mesmerized.
If a straightforward guy like Yu Xiangyang was enchanted by her, it was understandable.
Yu Xiangnian, still smiling, said, “Maybe.”
But in her heart, she thought: Wow, Xia Qingyun is quite a formidable woman.
Her demeanor and the way she presented herself as the “official girlfriend” suggested that Yu Xiangyang was probably completely under her thumb.
Xia Qingyun glanced at the telegram Yu Xiangnian was holding and asked, “Has there been any news about Yu Xiangyang and the others?”
Yu Xiangnian thought, if there were any news, wouldn’t you know before I do?!
“No, it’s a personal telegram of mine.” She forced a smile and said, “I have other matters to attend to. We can talk more another time.”
Xia Qingyun responded, “Alright, when Yu Xiangyang comes back, let’s go out together.”
Yu Xiangnian nodded and walked towards the family compound, feeling some concern about Yu Xiangyang’s personal matters.
Zhao Ruozhu would probably not approve of Yu Xiangyang dating Xia Qingyun.
Xia Qingyun was indeed attractive and appeared very warm and generous.
However, Yu Xiangnian had the sense that her warmth and generosity seemed somewhat contrived, as if they were trained rather than genuine, making her enthusiasm less appealing.
Moreover, Xia Qingyun constantly emphasized her relationship with Yu Xiangyang, which felt manipulative.
If Yu Xiangnian could sense this, Zhao Ruozhu, who had a sharp eye for things, would definitely not miss it.
When Yu Xiangnian returned home, she started searching for Cheng Jingmo’s previous remittance slips.
She needed the address from them to send money the next day.
There was nothing of Cheng Jingmo’s in her room, so Yu Xiangnian had to look in Xiao Jie’s room.
Xiao Jie’s room was simply furnished, with just a bed and a large cabinet.
The cabinet was used to store Xiao Jie and Cheng Jingmo’s clothes.
The cabinet door opened upward, and when closed, could serve as a table for placing items, writing, or reading.
In such a small room, there didn’t seem to be any remittance slips.
Instead, Xiao Jie pulled out a locked wooden box from under the bed and said, “All of my uncle’s things are in here.”
Since the wooden box was locked, whatever was inside must be important or private to Cheng Jingmo.
Yu Xiangnian respected Cheng Jingmo’s privacy and placed the wooden box back under the bed.
The next morning, she went to the post office.
In this era, post offices were quite crowded with people sending letters, making phone calls, sending telegrams, and remitting money… All communication between people had to go through the post office.
After a long wait, Yu Xiangnian finally reached the counter and explained her situation, asking the staff to help her check Cheng Jingmo’s previous remittance slips. However, the staff claimed to be too busy and rudely refused.
A person behind her kept urging, so Yu Xiangnian had to step aside.
As she was distressed about what to do, she heard someone calling her, “Comrade Yu.”
Turning around, she saw Zhang Mingfeng, the newspaper director.
Yu Xiangnian had met Zhang Mingfeng through Qiu Yang’s introduction and had interacted with him several times due to translation work.
Yu Xiangnian greeted him with a smile, “Director Zhang, are you here for business too?”
Zhang Mingfeng, in his forties, was a very kind person when he smiled. “I’m sending some money to my parents back home. And you?”
Yu Xiangnian awkwardly replied, “Same here. I don’t know the address and wanted to ask for their help to check it, but they were too busy to assist.”
Zhang Mingfeng picked up on the implied request for help.
“Fortunately, I know their director. Let me ask him for you.”
Yu Xiangnian smiled and nodded repeatedly, “Thank you, thank you so much, Director Zhang.”
Zhang Mingfeng led Yu Xiangnian out of the post office lobby and up to the second floor of a small bungalow, to an office with a plaque reading ‘Director’s Office.’
Zhang Mingfeng knocked on the already open door. Inside, a man looked up from his desk.
The man was about thirty-four or thirty-five years old, with a part in his hair, a square face, and wearing black-rimmed glasses.
“Ah! Lao (Old) Zhang, what brings you here? Please come in!”
Zhang Mingfeng led Yu Xiangnian into the office, saying, “I’m here to trouble you a bit.”
The man noticed Yu Xiangnian and paused for a moment. His eyes lit up behind his glasses, “Who is this?”
Zhang Mingfeng began introducing, “This is Comrade Yu Xiangnian, a freelance translator for our newspaper.”
He then introduced Yu Xiangnian, “This is Yang Wanli, the director of the post office.”
Yang Wanli and Yu Xiangnian shook hands and greeted each other.
Yang Wanli invited Zhang Mingfeng and Yu Xiangnian to sit down. Zhang Mingfeng explained Yu Xiangnian’s situation.
With a leader’s assistance, things went smoothly.
Yang Wanli made an internal call, and within ten minutes, a man came up with Cheng Jingmo’s previous remittance slips.
Yu Xiangnian took out paper and pen to note down the address, preparing to remit the money to this address later.
Yang Wanli said, “Comrade Yu, don’t trouble yourself. Just hand the money to him, and he will take care of it. Rest assured, it will be sent.”
Yu Xiangnian thought this was a bit too special and declined, “No need, I’ll handle it myself.”
Yang Wanli insisted, “Comrade Yu, it’s just a small matter. Don’t be so polite.”
Seeing them insist, Zhang Mingfeng mediated, “I also need to send some money, so let this comrade handle it for us.”
Yu Xiangnian added, “I also need to send a telegram.”
Yang Wanli said, “We can handle it all together.”
Yu Xiangnian had no choice but to accept and took out sixty yuan and five jiao from her bag, handing it to the man.
“This sixty yuan is for the remittance, and this five jiao is for the telegram fee,” Yu Xiangnian said, then added, “The telegram content should be: ‘Safe and well, don’t worry. Cheng Jingmo.'”
