Chapter 148: Why It’s Not Love at First Sight
After Xiao Jie went to bed, Cheng Jingmo entered the bedroom with high spirits and climbed onto the bed.
Yu Xiangnian put her hand up to block his approaching face. “Cheng Jingmo, I have a few questions to ask you.”
Although Cheng Jingmo was eager, he patiently replied, “Go ahead.”
Yu Xiangnian pouted her lips in dissatisfaction and asked, “Why did you only fall for me after meeting me a second time? Isn’t it supposed to be love at first sight?”
Cheng Jingmo smiled helplessly. “Yu Xiangnian, when I first met you, you were only eleven, just a child. How could I fall for you at first sight?”
Yu Xiangnian was taken aback.
Cheng Jingmo cupped her face in his hands, his thumb gently stroking her brow, his voice low. “Yu Xiangnian, you may not remember me, but I’ve always remembered you. I never expected to see you again after six years.”
“At that time, you had grown into a beautiful young woman, and I not only recognized you immediately but was also captivated by you right away.”
Yu Xiangnian, six years later, had changed greatly from when she was a child.
The youthful innocence had faded, replaced by arrogance and a high and mighty demeanor.
Yet Cheng Jingmo recognized her at once because her eyes were the most beautiful he had ever seen.
And when she smiled, there was a shallow dimple on the left side of her mouth, which was incredibly cute.
Yu Xiangnian eagerly asked, “Tell me about our first meeting.”
She had no recollection of meeting Cheng Jingmo at eleven.
Cheng Jingmo’s thumb brushed over her eyes again, her lashes fluttering against his thumb like a feather gently caressing his heart.
“That was my first year in the military. I was taking a bus from the countryside to the city when I saw a thief preparing to steal money from a woman’s pocket.”
“I caught the thief, but there were three accomplices in the bus. They not only denied stealing anything but also accused me of framing them. They held me back and demanded money from me, claiming I damaged their reputation.”
Cheng Jingmo’s eyes darkened as he sank into memory.
“At that time, I was just a naive bumpkin, not knowing how to handle such a situation. Even though I was doing the right thing, no one spoke up for me.”
“They dragged me off the bus, and I struggled with them. The people on the bus watched indifferently. Then, a little girl stood up and said she had seen them steal the money!”
“The little girl had two braids and was wearing a red dress. Her voice was loud and she held her head high, fearless.”
“The little girl said, ‘Driver, you can’t stop the bus; you must take these thieves to the police station! My father is the police chief and will definitely have their hands chopped off!’”
“The thieves seemed intimidated, looked at each other, and then asked the driver to stop.”
Cheng Jingmo’s gaze lowered as he spoke with a tone of resignation. “In the end, the driver did stop, and they ran away.”
“I went over to thank the little girl. She smiled playfully and whispered to me that she hadn’t actually seen them steal.”
Cheng Jingmo gazed at Yu Xiangnian with deep emotion. “The little girl said she believed in all soldiers because I was in uniform. Her parents were also soldiers, and she believed in all soldiers unconditionally.”
Cheng Jingmo had never been defended by anyone before; that day, he experienced what it was like to be defended for the first time.
The little girl, fearless and unconditionally believing in him, had stood up for him!
It was like a huge stone had been thrown into his heart, stirring up waves that wouldn’t settle for a long time.
Yu Xiangnian said, “So, you recognized me when Yu Xiangyang brought you to my house for a meal, but why didn’t you say anything at that time?”
“Yu Xiangnian…” Cheng Jingmo sighed softly, “How could you not remember our second meeting?”
“Our second meeting wasn’t at your house; it was at the military base gate.”
Cheng Jingmo patiently explained, “That day, when you came to find Yu Xiangyang, I also greeted you, but you ignored me.”
Yu Xiangnian really didn’t remember their encounter at the base gate. She gave an awkward smile and said, “I didn’t notice you at that time.”
Cheng Jingmo thought to himself: He knew.
He knew how hard he had tried to get her attention!
After seeing Yu Xiangnian at the military base gate, his mind was full of her image.
That night, he had an embarrassing dream.
And then, he fell into endless conflict and frustration.
Yu Xiangnian was Yu Xiangyang’s sister, which made her the daughter of the commander-in-chief.
She was so beautiful, and her family background was so distinguished.
Yu Xiangyang even mentioned she had graduated from high school.
But he…
To approach Yu Xiangnian was something he couldn’t even dare to think about.
Yet his mind was uncontrollably obsessed with her.
During the day, he would remind himself that he wasn’t worthy!
But Yu Xiangnian kept appearing in his dreams, leaving him anxious and helpless.
He wanted to see Yu Xiangnian every day, but she never appeared before him again.
He could only learn about Yu Xiangnian from Yu Xiangyang’s occasional mentions.
When he learned that Yu Xiangnian was the commander-in-chief’s favorite child, Cheng Jingmo had a wild thought.
He worked hard and strived to be the best at everything, finally catching the commander-in-chief’s attention.
Later, he got to see Yu Xiangnian as he wished and earned his parents’ favor.
But Yu Xiangnian looked down on him, not even giving him a proper glance.
He felt inferior and proud, and no matter how much he longed to be close to Yu Xiangnian, he maintained a facade of indifference.
To everyone, he didn’t like Yu Xiangnian, but only he knew how desperately he desired her.
Cheng Jingmo leaned in and kissed Yu Xiangnian’s eyes.
Everything he had achieved was incredibly hard-earned; it was as if he had used all his effort for a lifetime.
It felt like a dream come true.
After listening to Cheng Jingmo’s story, Yu Xiangnian pondered for a while before firmly saying, “Cheng Jingmo, you’re just attracted to me because of my appearance!”
Cheng Jingmo did not deny it, “Even if it was because of my attraction to your appearance, it’s only for you.”
He had seen many women but never had any thoughts about them.
He thought that if Yu Xiangnian didn’t marry him, he probably wouldn’t get married in this lifetime.
Yu Xiangnian thought for a moment and then asked, “If you’ve liked me for so long, why didn’t you say anything until I mentioned divorce?”
Cheng Jingmo’s gaze darkened. “To marry someone who won’t even look at me, I felt my self-esteem had already hit rock bottom. Knowing that speaking up would only bring humiliation, I still did; it meant I really had no dignity left in front of you.”
“There’s another reason,” Cheng Jingmo said seriously. “At that time, I could still leave you, but now I can’t. I’ve said before that if you had proposed divorce earlier, I would have let you go, but now I can’t, I can’t leave you.”
