Chapter 142: The Truth Comes Out
Pushing open the door, a strong smell of herbs filled the air.
An elderly man was sitting behind his desk, wearing a Zhongshan suit. He stood tall and straight like a pine tree, exuding an awe-inspiring aura of authority.
He was currently fiddling with a ginseng root.
“Dad!” Zhao Yan called out softly, giving Ling Yao an encouraging smile, and led her into the office.
Mr. Zhao slowly raised his head, his deep and sharp eyes like those of a hawk, fixed on Ling Yao’s face, as if he wanted to see through her.
“Have we met before?” Mr. Zhao suddenly asked. His voice was low, but it held an irresistible authority.
Ling Yao remained calm and composed, as if she didn’t feel the powerful aura emanating from Mr. Zhao at all.
A faint smile played on her lips, “Hello, Zhao Lao! We met at the hospital yesterday.”
The Mr. Zhao in front of her was the doctor that Old Master Lu had specifically invited to treat Lu Dagou.
Zhao Yan glanced at Ling Yao in admiration. Amazing! She was so calm in front of his old man.
Mr. Zhao also remembered. He nodded slightly, turned to look at Zhao Yan, “What do you want to see me about?”
After returning from the hospital yesterday, he had been flipping through medical books, looking for a way to treat Lu Dagou. He had been busy until very late and hadn’t gone home.
“Dad! I forgot to take my medicine when I went out yesterday. If it wasn’t for Ling Yao, you wouldn’t be seeing me today.” Zhao Yan briefly recounted what had happened yesterday.
Hearing this, Mr. Zhao looked at Ling Yao in surprise, “You’re a doctor?”
Ling Yao took out the letter of introduction that Liu Wenshan had written for her and handed it to Mr. Zhao, “Zhao Lao! This is a letter of introduction from Old Liu.”
Mr. Zhao took it, carefully read it, and looked up, his eyes sharp as he looked at Ling Yao,
“Then why didn’t you take the exam today?” Could it be that she wanted to use her son’s relationship to get ahead?
Although she had indeed saved his son, he would never agree if she wanted to use such underhanded methods.
The Medical Association needed doctors who truly had medical skills and abilities, not those who only knew how to curry favor and were half-baked.
As the president of the Medical Association, he should set an example.
Ling Yao was about to answer when a crisp knock on the door suddenly interrupted her.
Then, an elderly man with white hair but a vigorous spirit pushed open the door and walked in.
He walked directly to Mr. Zhao, handed him a document, “President, this year’s exam has been successfully completed.
This is the list of those who passed the exam. Please take a look. However, there is one thing I need to report to you.
During this exam, one candidate was absent without a valid reason. According to the rules, I have permanently added her name to the blacklist.”
The Medical Association only held one exam each year. If you missed it, you would have to wait until next year.
The Medical Association had a rule: if a registered candidate was absent from the exam without a valid reason, then no matter how outstanding they were, the Medical Association would never accept them again.
They would be permanently blacklisted by the Medical Association.
Mr. Zhao took the document, carefully read it, and turned to look at Ling Yao, “Why were you absent from the exam?”
Old Xu was slightly startled and looked at Ling Yao. Could she be Ling Yao?
“When I came here this morning, the guard said there was no exam today and wouldn’t let me in.” Ling Yao recounted what had happened.
Mr. Zhao picked up the phone on his desk and dialed a number.
“Come to my office. I have something to ask you.”
Mr. Zhao put down the phone and looked at Ling Yao, “If what you said is true, I will give you another chance to take the exam.”
“Thank you!” Ling Yao smiled and thanked him.
Old Xu’s brows furrowed. He had promised the Lu sisters that he would make sure Ling Yao couldn’t take the Medical Association’s exam. What should he do now?
“President! This is against the rules.”
Mr. Zhao glanced at Old Xu indifferently, “I remember a similar incident happened last year, didn’t it?”
Old Xu fell silent. Indeed, a similar incident had happened last year. The protagonist was his distant relative.
Because he was late for something, he missed the exam. In the end, it was Old Xu who stepped in and helped him get another chance.
After a while, the guard came to the office.
Seeing Ling Yao, the guard was surprised, “How did you get in?” He had clearly stopped her at the door. How could she have gotten in?
Old Xu feared that the guard would reveal him, so he winked at him.
However, the guard didn’t understand. He thought Old Xu was angry,
“Old Xu, I really did stop her at the door as you instructed. I don’t know how she got in. Please don’t fire me.”
Old Xu trembled with anger. This idiot, “What are you talking about?”
“Old Xu, don’t be angry. I really did stop her at the door. I don’t know how she got in. I’ll chase her out now.”
The guard said, reaching out to pull Ling Yao, but Zhao Yan stopped him.
Mr. Zhao’s gaze fell on Old Xu, filled with coldness, “Explain yourself.”
“I… this… President…” Old Xu didn’t know what to say. This involved the Lu family.
What if he revealed it and offended them? The Lu family was the top family in the capital. If he offended them, how would he ever get by in the capital?
“Someone must have instructed you to do this, right? Was it Lu Ergou or Lu Dagou?”
Ling Yao had already guessed that it was the two Lu sisters behind this when the guard stopped her from entering.
Old Xu looked at Ling Yao in shock, “How did you know?”
Ling Yao smiled faintly. It was indeed them.
Mr. Zhao frowned, his eyes stern as he looked at Old Xu, “Old Xu, tell me the truth. You should know my temper.”
Old Xu hesitated for a moment, sighed, “A while back, the eldest Miss Lu called me and asked me to do her a favor.
She wanted me to stop Ling Yao from getting a chance to enter the Medical Association.”
Mr. Zhao nodded slightly, looking at Ling Yao in confusion, “Aren’t you Mr. Lu’s significant other?”
Old Xu looked at Ling Yao in surprise. She was Mr. Lu’s significant other? Then, by offending her, he was offending Mr. Lu? Oh no!
Ling Yao smiled faintly, “President Zhao! Now that the truth has come to light, thank you for standing up for me.
I have something to do, so I’ll take my leave.” She suddenly lost interest in joining the Medical Association.
“You’re not taking the exam anymore? This is a rare opportunity.” President Zhao asked in confusion.
“I’m not taking it anymore.” Ling Yao shook her head with a smile, turned, and walked out of the office.
