Chapter 1
Cold.
So cold.
Ye Xiaoxiao shivered and opened her eyes. Through a dim yellow light, she saw a dilapidated room with a dark environment. The roof revealed exposed wooden beams, and the walls were covered with yellowed newspapers.
Outside, the north wind howled, making the thin window paper rustle.
“Cough, cough, cough…” Ye Xiaoxiao tried to speak but only coughed up a series of gasps.
The door was immediately pushed open, and a woman in her forties with short hair walked in. Her voice was filled with urgency: “Nier, you’re finally awake. Old Liu said if you keep burning up, you’ll burn your brain out. With the heavy snow blocking the mountains, the road to the clinic is not easy to travel…”
Ye Xiaoxiao’s head was muddled and she didn’t respond.
The woman, in this dim environment, took a thermos and a teacup, poured a cup of hot water and brought it over.
“Ma knows it’s our fault. If we hadn’t been mistaken at the army hospital during childbirth, you wouldn’t have been found by us until you were this old. The conditions in the city are good. If you want to go back to the Hao family, when the weather gets better, your father and brother will send you back. Don’t run around.
You’re lucky. Your fourth brother saw you fall into the ice hole and saved you. If it had been a bit later, you wouldn’t have made it.”
The teacup filled with hot water was placed in Ye Xiaoxiao’s hand, finally restoring some warmth to her body.
“Where is this… you… what’s your name?”
Miao Cuifang was a little surprised. How could she even forget the place name? As for her own name, this big daughter who came from the city to find her family was asking her this question for the first time.
“Xiaoxiao, this is Baishi Village, Songlin Town, Baichuan County, Changling City, Heiyun Province. I’m your mother, Miao Cuifang. There’s your father, Ye Jianguo, your brother, Ye Changqing, and your sister-in-law…”
Ye Xiaoxiao felt her head throbbing even more after hearing the beginning. She knew she wasn’t that lucky. She wasn’t a survivor of the plane crash, she was simply reborn.
And she was reborn into a 1980s period novel. The book’s protagonist, Hao Yanyan, was a reborn person. The first chapter of the book described how Hao Yanyan, in order to escape her previous tragic life, set out early to find her family in Capital.
The Hao family quickly accepted this reality. Following Hao Yanyan’s wishes, they swapped the names of their adopted daughter and biological daughter.
Ye Xiaoxiao, the adopted daughter raised by the Hao family, couldn’t accept this reality. She took the identity document that had been returned to her and traveled through mountains and rivers to reach the Ye family in Baishi Village. However, she couldn’t stand the poverty of this family and was about to leave after only seven days.
Due to the blizzard, the Ye family kindly tried to stop her, but Ye Xiaoxiao saw it as ill intention and secretly slipped out of the house, falling into an ice hole that hadn’t frozen solid after being artificially dug in the river.
Fortunately, Ye Changsheng was silently following her. When the accident happened, he saved her in time, preventing a tragedy.
Ye Xiaoxiao took a sip of hot water and realized that it contained brown sugar. The sweetness lingered on her lips and warmed her heart.
“Thank you, Mom. I understand.”
Ye Xiaoxiao calmed her chaotic thoughts and spoke in a hoarse voice.
Miao Cuifang was even more astonished. This was the first time the child had called her mom since coming to their house.
Although the other party came with the identity document of “Ye Xiaoxiao,” she always felt that her surname was Hao and that she was a member of the Hao family. As for them, they were just poor relatives living in the countryside.
Miao Cuifang sighed, thinking that the child must have been burned silly and her personality had changed.
Ye Xiaoxiao could only drink a few sips of water before she couldn’t swallow anymore. Her throat hurt badly, and her body was weak, so she could only lie down again.
Miao Cuifang took the teacup, tucked the blanket around Ye Xiaoxiao, and then walked out of the room.
Ye Xiaoxiao felt miserable. She came from a family of doctors. Her elders and siblings were all healers, and she was a medical student herself. Although she hadn’t graduated from college yet, she had been influenced by her family environment since childhood and could already prescribe and treat illnesses independently.
But she couldn’t help her own slight fever and cold.
Maybe she would burn her brain out, and then she would have wasted her chance at rebirth.
Thinking about how she had already died in the real world, she couldn’t stop her tears.
It would be better if she died. Anyway, after her parents remarried, few people cared about her.
Ye Xiaoxiao was dizzy and confused, lost in her thoughts until someone lifted her tattered cotton blanket and started to unbutton her cotton jacket.
Damn…
Ye Xiaoxiao was about to struggle when she heard Miao Cuifang’s voice.
“Nier, don’t move. I’m going to wipe your body with warm wine. If the fever doesn’t go down, we’ll have to take you to the town clinic tomorrow.”
Warm wine baths do have a fever-reducing effect, but the alcohol needs to be diluted. Ye Xiaoxiao couldn’t even check if the dilution standard was correct. She felt like a salted fish being flipped over and over again before being tightly covered with the blanket.
After a while, a younger woman spoke from outside.
“Mom, I poured some hot water into a bottle and put it in the blanket for my little sister.”
Miao Cuifang took it and put it next to Ye Xiaoxiao. She didn’t leave the room until she saw the other party fall into a deep sleep.
Closing the door, Miao Cuifang asked her eldest daughter-in-law, “How’s Lao Si?”
Zhang Xue looked worried, “He’s still burning up. If the fever doesn’t go down tonight, according to Old Liu, we’ll have to go to town.”
Old Liu was the village’s barefoot doctor. Although he didn’t have great skills, villagers loved to go to him for minor aches and pains.
Besides, Baishi Village was remote and poor. No one wanted to go to the town clinic unless it was a serious illness.
“We’ll see tomorrow.”
Miao Cuifang was now more concerned about Xiaoxiao’s illness. She was worried that if Xiaoxiao recovered, she would insist on leaving.
Even if their family was willing, would the Hao family be willing to raise a child with no blood ties?
Miao Cuifang decided to talk to her old man about this.
…
Ye Xiaoxiao didn’t sleep well. She was pulled from the vast sky of the new century to the kang in 1983 by several rooster crows in the morning.
Ye Xiaoxiao moved her body and felt uncomfortable because of the dampness. But the high fever had subsided.
She breathed a sigh of relief. She wouldn’t turn into a fool.
She got up and put on her clothes. She had time to look around the room. Although it was dilapidated and small, it was very clean. Apart from someone coming in occasionally to touch her forehead, no one slept with her last night.
This family was well-mannered and kind.
She leaned against the window and looked out at the yard. Judging from the location, it should be a small room in the west wing.
Smoke was rising from the yard, and figures were moving around.
Ye Xiaoxiao got out of bed. There was a mirror on the wooden cabinet in the room. She looked at the person inside.
The original owner had a delicate face, bright eyes, and white teeth. Her oval face had perfect facial features, and her eyes were as clear as spring lotuses. Her black hair cascaded down her shoulders, smooth like a waterfall.
Surprisingly, this face was nine points similar to her original appearance, only younger.
And as expected of the vicious female supporting character, the white moonlight of the big courtyard, such a pitiful and charming appearance could easily make people overlook her arrogant and vicious nature.
In the original book, this vicious female supporting character was exposed only at the end, just before the ending. She was despised by everyone and ended up spending the rest of her life in prison.
But all of this was no longer relevant to Ye Xiaoxiao.
She had figured it out. If she wanted to live a good life, she had to stay away from the male and female leads.
If she didn’t want to die, she shouldn’t follow the original plot and return to Capital to annoy Hao Yanyan. She shouldn’t fight for that unreliable fiancé.
“The protagonist is reborn, I’m transmigrated, we both have a bright future!”
Ye Xiaoxiao pressed her hand against her heart and said firmly.
Creak…
Suddenly, the wooden door opened, and a chubby child peeked in from outside.
