Chapter 5: The Cousin Who Was Succeeded Raises a Cheap ChildĀ
The three of them stood at the door, looking at the house in the east of the city, feeling a little worried.
The house was too dilapidated. They had split the family too hastily. It was already evening, and it was too late to fix the house. They didn’t even know where they would sleep tonight.
“Let’s make do for tonight. Tomorrow, uncle will go buy some things and fix the house,” Sun Gensheng comforted Ji Xiaoyue and Wang Guihua.
That night, the three of them slept under the stars, wrapped in blankets.
But even so, they were still happy.
Sun Gensheng made some simple repairs to the house and went to the street to buy pots and pans. Finally, he managed to tidy up the dilapidated house.
Ji Xiaoyue had been helping with the tidying up, and she was also thinking about what to do next.
“Xiaoyue, are you really not going to college? You worked so hard all those years, wasn’t it all for college?” Wang Guihua had held it in for a few days, but she finally couldn’t help but ask.
Ji Xiaoyue’s eyes were firm, and she said coldly, “Aunt, I’ve thought it over. I’ll make money first, and we’ll talk about college later. I…”
Before Ji Xiaoyue could finish, there was crying coming from the door.
“Mom and Dad! What am I going to do?”
At the door, her cousin, Sun Dahua, ran back, holding a child in her arms.
Wang Guihua saw her daughter crying her eyes out and asked urgently, “What’s wrong? Did your paralyzed mother-in-law bully you again? Hey, where did you get the child?”
She cried as soon as she saw her parents, “Mom and Dad, Ahai brought back a child. He said I can’t have children, so he adopted one for me. He went to the army on our wedding day, how could I have a child? I refused, but my mother-in-law said that if I didn’t want the child, she would make Ahai divorce me.”
Ji Xiaoyue saw Sun Dahua recalling the plot about her.
In the novel, Sun Dahua married a soldier named Li Dahai. On their wedding day, Li Dahai went to the army. Three years later, he brought back a child for Sun Dahua, saying it was the child of a deceased comrade-in-arms.
Sun Dahua foolishly raised the child for eight years, then Li Dahai came back with the wife he had found in the city, took his family away, and directly abandoned Sun Dahua.
Thinking about the plot, Ji Xiaoyue glanced at the child in Sun Dahua’s arms.
Was this the adopted son Sun Dahua would raise?
“Where’s Li Dahai? Who brought back the son, who raises him. Give the child back to him!” Ji Xiaoyue asked, walking up to Sun Dahua.
Sun Dahua shook her head sadly, “Ahai left the child and left half a month ago! I can’t refuse! I don’t know how to take care of children, and whenever the child cries, my mother-in-law beats and scolds me.
The child needs to be held all the time, and he cries as soon as he’s put down. My mother-in-law is paralyzed, and I do all the washing and cooking. I can’t handle it.”
Hearing her daughter’s words, Wang Guihua was so angry that she picked up a stick and was about to go to the Li family.
Sun Gensheng stopped her, “Your daughter is already married, what are you doing? Are you really going to cause a divorce? Are you going to live like this?”
He hesitated for a moment, then comforted her, “Dahua, this is the child of a martyr, you might as well raise him. Everyone has been through this, just endure it.”
Over the years, they had been bullied by the old woman, and it was largely due to Sun Gensheng’s weak and honest character.
Ji Xiaoyue glanced at her uncle and said, “Adopting a child requires a signature. It’s not like adopting a cat or a dog, you can just take it away. He suddenly brought the child back, could it be his own child?”
She snorted, “Your mother-in-law is not a kind person either. If it’s not her own grandson, why wouldn’t she even feel bad when he cries?”
Her words suddenly reminded the family.
Yes, it was strange.
Wang Guihua, with her straightforward nature, pulled Sun Dahua and was about to go and question her.
Ji Xiaoyue looked at the child in Sun Dahua’s arms. The child was at most three months old. That damned Li Dahai actually just left such a young child behind.
She pulled her aunt and cousin aside and whispered a few words in their ears.
The mother and daughter looked at her suspiciously, “Will this work?”
Ji Xiaoyue pushed Sun Dahua, “Cousin, go back first. Tell your mother-in-law what I said.”
She turned and went inside, picked up a pen and scribbled a few words, “When the time comes, show it to your mother-in-law and have her read it.”
Sun Dahua looked at the paper in Ji Xiaoyue’s hand, hesitant for a long time, “Xiaoyue, I can’t read either, what should I do?”
Ji Xiaoyue almost choked on her breath, “Okay! You go back with the child first! Act like nothing happened. Just say you received a letter, you can’t read it, I went to school, so let me go and read it for you.”
Sun Dahua was still hesitant, “Xiaoyue, what if we just raise him? I’m afraid that if we make a big fuss about this…”
Ji Xiaoyue frowned, looking at Sun Dahua’s young face.
Sun Dahua was only twenty-two years old, she still had time to start over. But if she wasted eight years, her youth would be gone.
“Cousin, tell me, what are you afraid of?” Ji Xiaoyue asked her.
Sun Dahua hesitated for a moment and whispered, “If Ahai doesn’t want me, how will my parents live in Anhe Village?”
Ji Xiaoyue nodded when she heard this, turned to her uncle and aunt and asked, “Uncle, Aunt, if Dahua comes back, will you drive her out?”
Wang Guihua frowned, “My own daughter, why would I drive her out? Before, when the old woman was in charge, we had to watch our words. Now that we’ve split, we’re a family.”
Ji Xiaoyue looked at Sun Dahua, “Cousin, if this child is really the child of Li Dahai’s comrade-in-arms, as he said, you can raise him if you want. But if it’s Li Dahai’s…
“If it’s his child, then he’s pushing things too far.”
She took a deep breath, “Right now, we just want to confirm. If it really is the child of a martyr, we’ll raise him as our own, what do you say?”
Sun Dahua was finally persuaded, and she nodded vigorously, “Okay, I’ll go back and tell my mother-in-law.”
Ji Xiaoyue also nodded, “Go ahead!”
After Sun Dahua left with the child, Ji Xiaoyue told her uncle and aunt, “Let’s first confirm if the child is Li Dahai’s. Let Old Lady Li take the child and go find her son, let them come back and divorce on their own initiative.
We can’t let them get away with this for free, the whole family.”
Ji Xiaoyue had originally planned to start making money, but now she was helping Sun Dahua deal with this child first, and she would make other plans later.
Soon after Sun Dahua went back with the child, Ji Xiaoyue went to the Li family with a swagger.
The Li family’s conditions seemed to be much better than the Sun family’s.
The novel didn’t describe this plot in detail. Ji Xiaoyue only knew Sun Dahua’s ending, but nothing else.
When Sun Dahua saw her coming, she welcomed her as if she had seen a savior, immediately holding the child and coming forward, “Cousin, you’re here!
My mother-in-law and I can’t read, Ahai sent us a letter, we both can’t understand it, can you read it for us?”
Ji Xiaoyue reached out and took the paper, glanced at it and said, “Dahua, Mom, the army has assigned me a house, you take the child and come with me to enjoy the good life.
I’m busy here and can’t come back to pick you up, you have to buy your own tickets to come.”
Old Lady Li in bed, hearing this, didn’t doubt it at all, and immediately picked up the cane next to the bed and hit Sun Dahua with it, “Did you hear that?
Hurry up and pack your things!
We’re going to the city to enjoy the good life!”
