With a clear goal in mind, Lin Yutang was filled with determination—until her stomach chose that very moment to growl loudly.
Before her transmigration, she’d been an overworked wage slave who hadn’t had dinner. And now, after transmigrating into the body of a poor village girl, she still hadn’t eaten? Ah, what a damnable coincidence.
Lin Zhi heard Lin Yutang’s stomach rumble and quickly stood up. “Xiao Tang, I’ll get you some wild vegetable porridge. Wait here,” she said.
Alright, alright. Transmigrators may come and go, but wild vegetable porridge remains a constant.
Ah, if only she could’ve finished the dinner she bought at the department store before transmigrating!
Just as Lin Yutang was wallowing in regret, the small golden locket around her neck emitted a faint glow. She felt a warm sensation near her collarbone and reached up to touch it.
Huh? The original owner had an identical golden locket! Does that mean this transmigration wasn’t some random absurdity? Could it be that she and I are somehow connected?
The moment her fingers touched the locket, Lin Yutang suddenly felt as though she’d been transported to another space!
The dilapidated room vanished, replaced by a towering building! This—this is the department store?!
Stunned, it took Lin Yutang a moment to collect herself. Her heart raced with wild excitement! Heaven really hasn’t treated me badly after all!
At her feet was a familiar plastic bag. She opened it and found the food she’d bought before transmigrating. The only thing missing was the sparkling water she’d taken a sip from—but with the entire department store at her disposal, that was nothing!
Remembering that Lin Zhi would soon return with wild vegetable porridge, Lin Yutang decided to exit the space for now. She could study this system in detail later.
But how to get out? In most novels, just thinking about leaving is enough. So why am I still here…?
Ah, the locket! I got in by touching the locket and thinking about the department store!
Lin Yutang touched the locket and thought about leaving. Instantly, she reappeared beside the shabby bed—only to crash right into Lin Zhi, who had just returned with the porridge.
“Ah! A ghost!” Lin Zhi screamed, dropping the bowl. How did a person suddenly appear out of thin air?! But upon taking a closer look, she realized it was her younger sister, Lin Yutang! Her heart swirled with fear, terror, and concern.
Crap, crap—how do I explain this without being labeled a monster? Lin Yutang’s emotions were in turmoil. What she feared most was that even her own sister might not accept her.
Maybe she could use the omnipotent white-bearded old man trope? Transmigration Skill #1: Blame everything on the white-bearded old man from a dream.
But after some thought, Lin Yutang realized that while claiming the old man taught her skills might be believable, suddenly appearing and disappearing or pulling out all sorts of strange new items would be much harder to explain.
“Sis, don’t be afraid. Let me explain,” Lin Yutang said softly, worried that physical contact might frighten Lin Zhi even more. She walked to the table and sat down before continuing.
“That Taoist priest was right. I’ve been missing a part of my soul since birth, but that part of me ended up in another dimension—a world completely different from ours, with many strange and advanced things. I lived there for many years until a certain opportunity brought me here. (No way I’m telling her I died by falling down the stairs because I wasn’t watching my step while drinking soda!)”
As Lin Zhi listened, she gradually calmed down. Her younger sister was someone she’d watched grow up! As long as she was still her sister, even if… even if she were a monster, she would accept her!
“It’s just that I’ve gained some unusual abilities. For example, I can disappear and reappear suddenly. There’s also a multi-story building in my mind—taller than the highest restaurant in our county—filled with food, drinks, and items that don’t exist in our world. And I can take them out whenever I want.”
Lin Zhi was astonished, her eyes wide with disbelief. But Lin Yutang’s sudden appearance out of thin air was proof enough!
She clenched her fists, then slowly relaxed them. Walking over to Lin Yutang, she could see her sister waiting nervously for her judgment, tense and afraid.
If her sister couldn’t accept her, she would understand. She would leave without causing any trouble.
Lin Zhi hugged Lin Yutang, who was trembling slightly from nervousness, and said softly, “I believe you. No matter what you become, you would never hurt me, right?”
Lin Yutang nearly burst into tears. In this era of closed-mindedness and backward thinking, Lin Zhi had discovered her secret yet still chose to accept her.
She didn’t want to lie—one lie would require countless more to cover it up, and she couldn’t bear that. So, she had chosen to confess everything.
“Sis, I would never harm you, and I would never harm anyone. I just want to live a peaceful life with you,” Lin Yutang murmured, holding Lin Zhi tightly.
“You silly girl, you’ll have to marry someday. You can’t spend your whole life with your sister,” Lin Zhi said, gently patting Lin Yutang’s head. Though she was only two years older, their parents had passed away early, and she had long taken on the responsibility of caring for her younger sister.
“Alright, I’ll go get you another bowl of wild vegetable porridge. Let’s eat our fill first, and then we can talk,” Lin Zhi said, turning to leave.
But Lin Yutang stopped her. Now that everything was out in the open, why bother with wild vegetable porridge?
“Sis, we don’t need that. I’ll give you something different to eat!” Lin Yutang slipped into her space and entered the department store. The layout was just as she remembered, though there were no cashiers or staff around.
She headed straight for the prepared foods section and chose some golden, crispy fried chicken and an Orleans-style chicken burger she often bought before. Then, she went to the drinks aisle and picked two small beverages—a sparkling water and a fruit juice—worried that Lin Zhi might not be used to carbonated drinks on her first try.
That should be enough for now. She wasn’t sure if the space could keep things fresh or automatically restock items—she’d have to explore that later.
When she emerged from the space, she saw Lin Zhi pacing anxiously around the room. Lin Zhi relaxed visibly upon seeing her.
Lin Yutang brought out a tray laden with food. Instantly, the irresistible aroma of fried chicken filled the entire room.
Gulp. Lin Zhi unconsciously swallowed. It smelled incredible!
Lin Yutang walked to the table and called out to Lin Zhi, who was standing there dumbfounded. “Sis, don’t just stand there. Come and eat!”
Lin Zhi wanted to maintain some composure, but the rich, savory scent was too overpowering!
“What… is all this?” Lin Zhi stared blankly at the strangely shaped items on the tray. What were they, and how did one eat them? The golden-brown thing looked like some kind of poultry?
The round, tall thing looked quite appetizing, with what seemed to be meat and vegetables inside. And then there were two long containers, one black and one orange—what were those?!
Lin Yutang pointed to the fried chicken. “This is a chicken, but it’s cooked by frying.”
“This is a hamburger. The top and bottom are bread—sort of like our steamed buns—and in between, there’s meat and vegetables. You have to take a big bite—the texture is amazing!”
“These two are drinks—basically delicious water. Since it’s your first time, try this orange juice first,” she said, unscrewing the cap and handing the bottle to Lin Zhi.
Lin Zhi mimicked her sister’s drinking motion and took a sip. She was instantly hooked—sweet and tangy, with such a strong orange flavor it was like eating an actual orange!
Seeing the sparkle in Lin Zhi’s eyes, Lin Yutang knew she was pleased and urged her to try the other items. The fried chicken was incredibly crispy on the outside, yet the meat inside remained tender and juicy!
As for the thing called a hamburger—the texture was truly fantastic! The bun was soft, the vegetables fresh and crisp, and the meat savory and tender. It was absolutely divine!
Lin Zhi and Lin Yutang ate and chatted, stuffing themselves until they were full and satisfied. It was truly a wonderful meal!
