Ordinary acid rain is odorless, but during natural disasters, the acid levels are too high. This has caused the deaths of survivors and the corrosion of various materials, and it filled the air with unpleasant smells.
Jiang Ning disinfected her home and then turned on the air purifier.
Since they couldn’t go outside, she reviewed and absorbed the knowledge she had acquired during this time, and she didn’t forget to teach Doudou some medical knowledge.
The dog did not understand, but it may have regarded itself as a human. It squatted next to Doudou and was unwilling to leave, even though it was drowsy.
One is responsible for knowledge training, and the other for physical training. For them, who have survived seven or eight years in the apocalypse, life isn’t particularly difficult.
The neighbor next door was so idle and bored that he occasionally spoke on the walkie-talkie, “Brother Huo, Sister-in-law, do you need another sibling?”
Jiang Ning readily agrees, “Sure, if you can find a way to get here.”
The acid rain continued for several days without any signs of clearing up.
Who would have known that Qin Chuan actually came over, and the protective clothing on his body was the same brand as theirs.
Well, he’s truly the king of copying in the universe.
Not only the father and son from the Qin family, but also Rong Sanshao unexpectedly came over, “Sis, got any food?”
This was even more impressive: not only did he have the highest-end protective suit for himself, but even the dog did, and it was obviously custom-made.
Ah Ben walked strangely in the protective clothing, but he was still willing to brave the acid rain just to see his elder brother.
The two dogs were playing downstairs, while Doudou and Qin Mu were boxing on the rooftop.
While for them, they were addicted to Mahjong and played until it was pitch dark and did not even have the mood to cook.
Jiang Ning casually said, “How about some expired instant noodles?”
Rong Sanshao no longer had high expectations, “As long as it won’t kill me.”
“You’ll only find out after eating if it kills you.”
She’s not lying. It was really expired. It was taken out of the space and placed in the villa a year ago.
Without seasoning packets, they just threw in some things, they added dried shiitake mushrooms, wood ears, beef tendon balls, fried eggs, etc., and everyone had a big bowl full of food.
Rong Sanshao never eats low-end junk food, but now he thinks it is a human world delicacy and wants to swallow his tongue. “Sister, I have to follow you to have delicious food.”
Jiang Ning glanced at him, “Your family has a farm; so, making homemade instant noodles and seasoning shouldn’t be difficult.”
It was true that the Rong family had a farm, and they even managed to build a greenhouse, but who knew the acid rain would come so fiercely and contaminate the soil sooner or later.
These damn days were simply unbearable.
As they ate and discussed, they are wondering when the acid rain would stop.
Jiang Ning shook her head. “Who knows? It seems to have its own intelligence and is deliberately tormenting people to death.”
Living in a disaster, if you don’t have a little fear, you will definitely die the quickest.
If the rain had been acidic from the beginning, maybe not so many people would have died. Instead, it forced them to drop their guard before pouring down suddenly.
Rong Sanshao didn’t even waste the last drop of instant noodle soup, “Who says it isn’t. It was deliberately playing trick with us.”
Just as they were about to continue playing Mahjong, sunlight suddenly shone through the window.
The acid rain had stopped, and the sun was out.
The rainbow after the rain was exceptionally beautiful and dazzling, like something out of a fairy tale that captivates people’s minds and enchants them.
“The sun’s out!”
Suddenly, there were cheers on the villa’s rooftop.
Not just one person, but several people rushed to their rooftops one after another and jumped happily.
Rong Sanshao wasn’t happy, picking up the walkie-talkie to curse, “Are all your heads made of butts? Wasn’t the lesson from last time enough? Have dogs eaten your brains? If you don’t believe it, another wave of acid rain will melt your bones right away.”
“Woof!”
Ah Ben protested; it didn’t want brains as stupid as that.
Ever since he took over as the chairman of the property committee, Rong Sanshao’s temper has become increasingly irritable, and curses come out of his mouth easily.
Those who were so excited they lost their reason might have felt unconvinced, but no one dared to openly contradict him.
Soon, they quieted down and obediently went downstairs.
Not half an hour later, acid rain swept in again, in a sudden shower.
Jiang Ning felt somewhat surprised; it seems like the second generation of slippers had grown up.
If he hadn’t stopped it in time, they might have been sent away by the acid rain again.
The community was safe, but as for outside… it was difficult to reason with those damned ghosts.
The authorities had long issued warnings that acid rain might recur, so even when the weather cleared, they shouldn’t rush outside but wait for updates from relevant departments.
Unfortunately, humans are inherently rebellious.
With intermittent acid rain, the community soon faced a new problem—water shortage.
Despite using the water sparingly, it still depleted quickly. Even if they left it unused, it would spoil. Boiling it didn’t make it safe to drink, as it could still cause severe diarrhea.
After years of natural disasters, clean water tablets had long been gone, and long-term water storage was impossible.
Many people started borrowing water on the community channel.
But water means life, and who would give it away? Even if someone had it, they could only remain silent; the water sources were contaminated. Helping others also had its limits—who would risk their life for another?
No one spoke up, those with thick skin could only be named one by one.
Finally, everyone pretended to be dead and went offline.
Jiang Ning also pretended to be dead.
Fortunately, the authorities soon came up with a plan: starting the day after tomorrow, there would be water distribution at the municipal square, and residents in need could collect water.
People cheered, but soon they became worried again—how would they bring the water back?
There was lively discussion on the channel, but Jiang Ning, who was sleeping and wrapped in a blanket, had no idea. Until someone decided to disturb her.
Rong Sanshao came knocking and even brought Qin Chuan along, “Sis, brother-in-law, can we borrow your protective suits?”
Jiang Ning was surprised, “You still lack the protective suits?”
The landlord’s family didn’t have any surplus food. Besides, even if there was, Rong Sanshao couldn’t be allowed to squander it. Old man Rong only promised to give 2 sets.
If they didn’t solve the water source problem soon, people in the community would eventually die of thirst.
Rong Sanshao had his own plans; the authorities distributed two 100-liters of polyethylene plastic barrels per community unit that could resist acid rain.
“Sis, if your family lends out protective suits, other owners can take turns carrying water back.”
If the protective suits were out, there would be no need for labor. After a little thought, Jiang Ning agreed, “My family has only two sets of protective suits; we can only lend out one.”
There were still suits left in her space, but even though it had been so many years since the end of the world, it couldn’t be easily exposed.
Rong Sanshao had no objections; building 49 and 50 each had one set, plus two sets from the Rong family, with four people going out each day to get water, making three trips back and forth a day, and each household could barely avoid dying of thirst.
That’s how the happy decision was made.
The owners who got the news were delighted and followed Rong Sanshao’s arrangements one after another.
However, they soon deeply regretted it. The protective suits were incredibly heavy, and one liter of water weighed two pounds. Carrying 200 pounds of water between two people, they were nearly in tears from exhaustion.
They stumbled all the way; fortunately, the plastic barrels issued by the authorities had lids; otherwise, they would have spilled everything halfway.
When they returned, they had to distribute the water from door to door. After one trip, they were exhausted, their shoulders bruised and swollen.
But even so, the instinct to survive remained, and no one was willing to give up easily.
Moreover, with owners taking turns, it took several days to rotate once.
Alas, a ton of gold couldn’t buy foresight; if they had protective suits themselves, they could just stay home and wait for others to bring water to their doorsteps.
