Zhuang Zi temporarily stayed at the Shen family’s house, sleeping in the same room as before.
After taking a shower, she couldn’t sleep, so she walked to the balcony to look at the night view outside.
The night was quiet and serene, with the bright moon hanging above the treetops, casting a soft, pale glow.
She stood there silently for a while, thinking about her upcoming plans.
After a while, she heard the sound of a car engine from downstairs. Looking down, she saw that Si Hang was about to leave.
Driving from here to the police station would take half an hour, even longer if there was traffic. So, unless it was important, he only came over on weekends to avoid wasting time on the road.
The car drove out of the villa’s gate, and the red taillights quickly disappeared behind the flowing rock garden.
Zhuang Zi pulled the curtains and returned to the room. She took out her sister’s belongings from her suitcase, sat cross-legged on the bed, and began to go through them one by one.
Many of her sister’s things were either burned or thrown away when she passed away. The remaining items were those with sentimental value.
She took out her sister Zhuang Yao’s old mobile phone. It had been off for a long time due to disuse, so Zhuang Zi found her own charging cable and plugged it in.
There was also a white Hetian jade peony pendant in the box, smooth and beautiful. It was a birthday gift she had given her sister on her 30th birthday.
Her sister had congenital urticaria, inherited from their mother, and was severely allergic to pollen. So, she never gave her real flowers. Even after her sister passed away, she never brought real flowers to her grave.
Furthermore, the forensic report from the car accident indicated that Zhuang Yao likely had an asthma attack triggered by her allergy, which caused the accident. The surveillance footage showed that before the car flipped down the mountain, Zhuang Yao had been coughing continuously.
Zhuang Zi slowly leaned back against the headboard, staring at the ceiling.
The soft light from the lamp highlighted her delicate face, making her skin look translucent like jade.
She stared into space, and at one moment, her brows furrowed tightly.
Why did her sister suddenly have such a severe asthma attack on the day of the accident?
Could it be that she ate something wrong or accidentally came into contact with an allergen?
At that moment, the phone vibrated as it powered on, interrupting her thoughts.
The phone number had been disconnected for months due to unpaid bills.
The phone screen didn’t have a password, so she went directly to the contact list. What she saw made her sit up abruptly.
All the records in the phone had been wiped clean, nothing remained.
She stared at the phone in shock, frowning, and instinctively suspected Jiang Zhihao.
Even though the police had ruled out his involvement, there was no evidence proving he had nothing to do with her sister’s accident, right?
Perhaps he wasn’t the one who harmed her sister, but given that he had emotionally betrayed her, who could guarantee he didn’t do something more sinister?
Besides, why would he delete her phone contacts for no reason? This clearly indicated something was wrong.
Moreover, her sister’s belongings had been in his possession. If not him, then who else?
These suspicions all pointed towards him.
Zhuang Zi thought calmly for a moment and decided not to call him directly to ask, as it might alert him.
However, without her sister’s ID card, the service center wouldn’t print the call records for her.
What should she do?
…
Si Hang was driving halfway when he received a call.
He glanced at the number, recalling that he had seen it before but had forgotten to save it.
He put on his Bluetooth headset. “What’s up?”
If it wasn’t absolutely necessary, Zhuang Zi didn’t want to trouble him.
But now she had no one else to turn to. Since she had asked for his help, she adopted a polite and requesting tone. “I’d like to ask you for a favor.”
“Go ahead.”
“It’s like this. I got my sister’s phone today, but all the data has been erased. I really need to see her previous call records. Can you help me with that?”
Si Hang asked calmly, “What do you need them for?”
“It’s very important, possibly related to my sister’s accident.”
“Hasn’t the case been closed?”
“It has, but…” She hesitated for a few seconds, trying not to show that she doubted the police’s conclusion, “I’m worried that my sister might have had a conflict with someone before the accident, which led to it.”
There was silence for two seconds.
Then he said, “If it’s not a criminal case, the police don’t have the authority to check citizens’ call records. Since your sister’s car accident case is closed, even if I wanted to help, we’d need to go through some formal procedures. It’s quite troublesome.”
Zhuang Zi felt a bit disheartened and was silent for a few seconds.
He wasn’t obligated to help her, and she didn’t want to cause him trouble. After all, he had just told her that morning that he was extremely busy and still had to take care of her. She had already inconvenienced him enough and didn’t want to ask for more.
Since he said it was troublesome, she decided to give up tactfully. “If it’s inconvenient, then never mind.”
Sensing her disappointment, Si Hang cleared his throat and added, “However, I can help you apply for it, but I can’t guarantee the time.”
Zhuang Zi was taken aback, and upon realizing what he meant, she was pleasantly surprised but quickly questioned him, “Really?”
“Yes.”
Zhuang Zi had always been very self-aware, knowing that others weren’t obliged to agree to her requests. Considering his busy work schedule, she hadn’t had high hopes before calling. But since she was determined to find the truth for her sister, she had to try every possible lead. Now that he agreed, she felt deeply grateful.
So, when she spoke again, her voice carried a hint of relieved laughter. “Thank you.”
It was the first time she had laughed while talking to him, even though it was over the phone. But her clearly happy voice felt like a refreshing breeze, unexpectedly stirring ripples in his calm heart.
Listening to her soft voice, Si Hang was momentarily dazed for two seconds.
When he snapped back to reality, he replied indifferently, “Mm,” and hung up the phone.
As the car continued steadily on the road, he recalled her gentle tone when she asked for help and couldn’t help but scoff lightly. Yet, the next moment, he unconsciously smiled a bit.
