Jiang Ning sat up and found a pair of eyes staring at her.
She rubbed the corners of her eyes and made sure it was Huo Yishen.
The two looked at each other, and neither was willing to look away.
“Anning, am I dreaming?” The voice was extremely hoarse.
Jiang Ning smiled, but it was uglier than crying. “Huo Yishen, do you want to die?”
Huo Yishen was still dazed; it took him a while to come to his senses.
He held Jiang Ning’s hand, and this time he managed to hold it, and it was extremely warm.
Jiang Ning stroked his thin and pale face. “Why are you so stupid and give the medicine to Coke?”
Huo Yishen covered her hand and said after a long time, “Coke is what you care about the most. I want it to come back alive to accompany you and stay with you for me.”
If he wasn’t sick, Jiang Ning really wanted to slap him. “Huo Yishen, you should love yourself the most. If you don’t even love yourself, how can you love others?”
Huo Yishen didn’t refute her but just looked at her quietly, unwilling to look away.
Jiang Ning gently leaned on his chest. “Promise me, don’t be so stupid next time.”
“Okay.”
“Remember to love yourself.”
“Mm, I’ll listen to you.”
The two hugged each other gently and were reluctant to separate for a moment.
Feeling her cry, Huo Yishen rubbed Jiang Ning’s head. “How did you find me?”
“It was Coke.” Jiang Ning snuggled on his shoulder. “It saw the fireworks I set off and came here through many obstacles.”
After getting a nutrient injection and drinking some nourishing soup, Jiang Ning saw that he seemed a little better and asked, “What happened between you and Coke?”
Huo Yishen’s memories flashed back. He didn’t hold his sister’s hand but managed to hug Coke. Unfortunately, the sandstorm was too powerful, and both he and the dog were blown away.
When he woke up, his body was already injured in many places, and Coke’s stomach was scratched by flying stones.
The man and the dog were knocked around several times while avoiding the storm, and his thigh was scratched. He stumbled and fumbled around to look for shelter. He doesn’t know how long he walked before he found a cave.
What happened next was pretty much what Jiang Ning had guessed.
The sandstorms continued, and there were not enough first aid supplies for one man and one dog, so he sewed up the dog’s wounds and gave up most of the food and water.
As more and more survivors took refuge in the shelter they found, they began to target Coke.
He killed a few, but later the infection in his wounds worsened, and he could no longer hold on.
Huo Yishen persisted until the sandstorm stopped, but his body could no longer move, so he had to let Coke go.
Unexpectedly, Coke did not leave but instead guarded him.
What happened later, the unconscious Huo Yishen had no idea.
He did not expect that Coke would not only guard him but would even find a way to save him.
Perhaps this was destined; if he had not seen the fireworks, Huo Yishen would never have woken up again.
Huo Yishen stroked the dog’s head. “Good dog.”
The dog suddenly broke down and whimpered.
After comforting the dog, Huo Yishen tried to sit up and asked nervously, “Where’s Doudou?”
“Don’t worry about Doudou; she’s a volunteer in the settlement camp and will take good care of herself.”
Jiang Ning also wanted to rush back, but he and the dog were too weak, and it would be difficult to take care of them with so many people around. Especially with a dog, they would become everyone’s target.
They had been in her space for three days without realizing it, but Jiang Ning was still quite confident in Doudou. “She is very sensible and won’t run around.”
She reminded her before leaving that she shouldn’t worry too much even if she didn’t come back for a few days.
She promised Doudou that she would bring Huo Yishen back.
“Don’t worry; it won’t be too late to go back after you and Coke’s injuries have healed better.”
He had to endure more than ten days without medical care, medicine, or food. Even a strong body could not bear it.
Jiang Ning took good care of him, paying attention to his condition and adjusting the medication in time.
Due to his weakness, she couldn’t provide strong supplements; fruits and meals were balanced, and milk and eggs were essential.
After two days of care, Huo Yishen was really worried about Doudou. Jiang Ning had no choice but to take him and the dog out of her space.
Even with masks, the cave was still stinking, and there were rotting corpses all around.
The three of them covered their mouths and noses tightly and cautiously crawled out.
Huo Yishen not only injured his thigh but also sprained his waist, and he couldn’t walk at all. After the sandstorms and heavy rains, it was unrealistic to drive the undamaged car back.
Returning with Huo Yishen and Coke might involve dangers along the way.
Jiang Ning found a secluded place, hid Huo Yishen and Coke, and left food, water, and weapons. “Wait here; I’ll go get Doudou.”
Huo Yishen’s injury is no joke, and it will take a long time to recover. He warned, “Anning, be careful on the road.”
After being away for five days, Jiang Ning was also worried about Doudou and hurried back all the way. The rain stopped, the sun came out, and the road was much easier to walk on than before.
Her legs were too slow, so she found a rusty bicycle from the space and pedaled hard to rush to the settlement camp. It was very bumpy along the way, but she finally arrived.
The settlement camp was being dismantled, and many survivors had already left.
Jiang Ning then learned that the rescue mission in Guancheng had been officially terminated a few days ago, and these few days were for the survivors to recuperate. The rescue mission was completed, and they had to go home.
The Guancheng government was only responsible for humanitarian rescue. As for the follow-up of the survivors, they had to make their own decisions, and no one could make decisions for them.
Unexpectedly, many people refused to leave and even quarreled with the staff. Those who did not find their relatives wanted the staff to continue to help find them.
If even the settlement camp was withdrawn, where would they wait?
Some who were left alone had no way to survive on their own. If the camp stayed, they at least had two wild vegetable buns a day.
Crying, shouting, and fighting intertwined into a tragic scene, and some even attempted suicide right there; it was chaotic.
Jiang Ning looked in the crowd. The shadows of Doudou and Zheng Weili came into view, followed by the injured Zhang Chao and Lu Yu.
Especially Zhang Chao, his foot seemed to be sprained; Ding Qi was holding him beside him.
Despite the natural disaster, the four people were still alive, which was a thing to be happy about.
Jiang Ning was about to come over, but who knew that a boy in camouflage clothes suddenly blocked the way of several people and reached out to grab Doudou.
Zheng Weili didn’t even blink and punched him, “You were born with a good life, and you think it’s endless, huh?”
The boy’s mouth was twisted, and blood oozed from the corner of his mouth. The next moment, he took out a gun from his pocket, pointed it at Zheng Weili’s head, and shouted arrogantly, “Don’t be shameless; believe it or not, I will blow your head off.”
Several followers swarmed up and surrounded everyone. Jiang Ning narrowed her eyes, and the arrogant boy looked familiar, as if she had seen him somewhere.
She quickly remembered—it was the guy who had harassed survivors by the river last time, trying to teach her a lesson before the speedboat was punctured.
He didn’t drown?
Good people don’t live long, but evil people live for thousands of years.
As the son of a disaster relief leader, he not only failed to set an example, but his attitude is so arrogant and domineering.
What a terrible son.
Jiang Ning walked over calmly.

Please bear with me if I didn’t update right away 😅. I was either buried in work 💼… or buried in rereading the book 📖. (P.S. Most of the time I’m rereading it 🤭—so you know just how good the story is! 🌟)
