The Little Widow Cannon Fodder In The ’70 Chapter 79.1

Chapter 79.1

Feng Mei arrived three days later, on a Sunday, coinciding with Lu Yu’s day off.

Lu Yu drove the military’s car to pick up Sister Feng and her family from the train station. They stood at the exit. Jiang Nian being short, had to tiptoe to see through the crowded heads. Lu Yu, tall with long legs, spotted Feng Mei carrying a large military green bag on her back, holding hands with Song Xiangdong on her left and Song Xianghong on her right, making their way towards the exit, squeezing through the crowd.

Lu Yu said, “Sister-in-law Feng is here.”

“Where?”

Jiang Nian stood on tiptoe and caught sight of Feng Mei emerging from the crowd.

Song Xiangdong and Song Xianghong also saw Jiang Nian. They smiled and greeted, ” Aunt Jiang, Uncle Lu.”

“Jiang Nian.”

Feng Mei ran over to Jiang Nian as if meeting a close relative, hugged her and said, “I’ve missed you so much. Can you believe it’s only been two months apart? It feels like forever.”

Jiang Nian’s heart trembled, hesitating for a moment before hugging Feng Mei back. She had thought Feng Mei might be distant when she arrived, questioning her thoughts, but instead, Feng Mei warmly embraced her without saying a word.

“Sister Feng, I’ve missed you too.”

Jiang Nian smiled. Feng Mei’s bag was heavy. Lu Yu took it and carried it in one hand, lifting Song Xianghong with the other. He asked, “Where’s your dad?”

Song Xianghong said, “Dad went to a meeting. He asked Mom to bring us over.”

His speech was much clearer than two years ago. Song Xiangdong walked beside Lu Yu, looking up at his tall figure. “Uncle Lu, Dad also bought a bottle of good wine for you. It’s in Mom’s bag.”

Lu Yu smiled, “I’ll check it out when we get back.”

As Feng Mei and Jiang Nian walked behind, the initial excitement of their reunion settled. Feng Mei tugged on Jiang Nian’s sleeve, watching Lu Yu’s back, and clicked her tongue.

Then she turned to Jiang Nian and said, “When Lu Yu sent us a telegram saying you two were getting married, I thought Old Song had made a mistake in reading, and Old Song thought the telegraph operator had made a mistake too. He even sent another telegram to confirm that you two were really married.”

Jiang Nian lowered her head, smiling softly. “It’s true.”

“And you two—”

Feng Mei paused for a moment, unsure where to start. After thinking for a while, she finally asked, “When did you two hit it off? We’ve been living together for so long, and I never noticed. Last time you and Lu Yu came to Dongshi City, I still thought of you two as brother-in-law and sister-in-law. How did you get married just two months later?”

Feng Mei rambled on with a lot of questions.

She was genuinely curious. Lu Yu and Jiang Nian were not blood-related brother  and sister-in-law, so there was no problem with them being together. But when did they get together? They didn’t seem to have shown any hints.

Jiang Nian glanced at Lu Yu walking ahead and hesitated, deciding to pass the question to Lu Yu. “Sister Feng, you can ask Lu Yu about it when we get back.”

After saying that, she grabbed Feng Mei and ran towards the car.

Feng Mei: …

Hey, aren’t they going to tell her?

Song Xiangdong and Song Xianghong sat in the back of the car. Song Xianghong happily said, “I’m riding in the car just like Dad.”

Commander Song is now the deputy division commander. Sometimes when he goes out, there are drivers to pick him up. Song Xianghong and Song Xiangdong have seen Commander Song often being driven around, so they’ve been wanting to ride in a car too.

However, military district cars used for official business aren’t something they can just casually ride in. The two children had been looking forward to it for a long time. Even Feng Mei was happily touching the seats.

“I never expected to not benefit from Old Song’s influence but to benefit from Commander Lu’s success instead.”

Lu Yu glanced at Feng Mei in the rearview mirror. He then asked, “How has Deputy Division Commander Song been lately?”

Feng Mei replied, “He’s still the same.”

“Oh, right.” Feng Mei suddenly remembered something else and shifted forward a bit to face Lu Yu.

“There’s something I really need to thank you for. If you hadn’t gone up the mountain to hunt and called Old Song away, he would have gone to Donggou County. Who knows, he might not have made it back now.”

Feng Mei shuddered at the thought.

Lu Yu turned the steering wheel slightly and looked ahead. “What happened in Donggou County?”

Jiang Nian glanced at Lu Yu, then turned to Feng Mei with curiosity and confusion. “What happened over there?”

Feng Mei patted her chest and said, “There was an earthquake the next day. I’m not sure about the details, but I heard it was quite serious. If Old Song had gone, I was afraid he wouldn’t have come back. Old Song even told me it was fate, that heaven didn’t want him to go this time.”

Jiang Nian smiled and looked ahead at the road.

After a while, she glanced again at Lu Yu driving, and suddenly a question popped into her mind. Regardless of whether Sun Ying was reborn or not, she seemed to know something from her previous life, though Jiang Nian didn’t know how she knew.

So what about Lu Yu?

As the male lead, did he have memories from his past life?

Jiang Nian found her own whimsical thoughts amusing. If Lu Yu had memories from his past life, he would have been with the original female lead, Sun Ying, long ago. Where would she fit into that?

“Jiang Nian, your eyes are practically glued to Commander Lu.”

Feng Mei pushed Jiang Nian’s shoulder. Seeing her stunned expression, Feng Mei blushed on Jiang Nian’s behalf. Even though she was married, staring so directly at her own man with others around wasn’t appropriate.

Song Xianghong watched Jiang Nian and then giggled while covering his mouth. “Aunt Jiang is peeking at Uncle Lu.”

Lu Yu laughed out loud.

Jiang Nian blushed and quickly averted her gaze, changing the subject to something else.

Back at the military base, Lu Yu dropped Jiang Nian and the others off and drove the car back.

Feng Mei immediately unpacked her bag upon entering the house, taking out many things.

“These mushrooms were picked by Old Song and his friends from the mountain, as well as Sichuan peppercorns, mushrooms…” She brought out a lot of items, and finally there was a bottle of wine.

Song Xiangdong ran over to hug the bottle and said, “This is what Dad sent to Uncle Lu.”

“You little brat, what do you know,” Feng Mei scolded, pulling Song Xiangdong away and grabbing the bottle to place it on the table. “Wait for Commander Lu to come back before giving it to him. Don’t break it, or your dad will scold you.”

“Oh,” Song Xiangdong replied, and he and Song Xianghong wandered around the house. They looked but didn’t touch the things on the table and cabinets.

Feng Mei was sweating all over and wiped her forehead. “It’s warm over here. I’m wearing too much. It’s so hot.”

After saying that, she took off her coat and hung it on the hook on the wall.

Hearing the commotion, He Yue ran over. Seeing Feng Mei, she was stunned and only learned from Jiang Nian that she had come here to visit relatives.

He Yue’s son is a year older than Song Xiangdong. They live opposite each other, and Fang Guo heard the voices of Song Xiangdong and his brother and ran over to play.

Lu Yu returned just as it was getting dark. He brought back a pound of meat, a fish, and some vegetables.

He Yue took her child home, and dinner was cooked by Jiang Nian with Feng Mei assisting. Jiang Nian smiled and said, “Sister Feng, you sit down. I’ll handle it.”

Feng Mei replied, “I can’t sit still. I’d rather be here talking to you. Hey, do you remember the couple who live across from my house?”

Jiang Nian said, “I remember. The man couldn’t have children.”

Feng Mei snorted. “Those two are divorced now.” Seeing Jiang Nian’s confusion, she continued, “The woman didn’t want to live with her husband anymore, saying she couldn’t be a mother for life. They argued and got divorced, and it’s been half a month since then.”

After the meal was ready, several people sat at the table. Feng Mei then asked Lu Yu, “When did you and Jiang Nian get together?”

Jiang Nian paused her actions and glanced vaguely at Lu Yu. She actually didn’t dare to say, afraid that revealing it too early would make Feng Mei think she and Lu Yu had deceived everyone. At that time, Feng Mei was still single-mindedly trying to match her with Song Bai.

Lu Yu also thought of this and said to Feng Mei, “Around the Lunar New Year at the hospital.”

This time wasn’t too early or too late. It was exactly half a year after Lu Yu left and came back. Feng Mei was stunned for a moment, then quietly ate a piece of meat. Song Xianghong didn’t understand what it meant, but Song Xiangdong did. He kept his head down and said nothing.

After a while, Feng Mei slapped her leg, pushed Jiang Nian’s hand, and said, “You ungrateful girl, why didn’t you tell me so early? You didn’t tell me you were getting married in advance. I came late, and where do we drink the wedding wine?”

Jiang Nian breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, “It’s not too late to drink now.”

“Here’s the wine.”

This time it was Song Xianghong who took the bottle from the cabinet and handed it to Jiang Nian. Jiang Nian took the bottle and frowned in confusion. Feng Mei explained, “Old Song knew you two were getting married and specially sent this to you.”

She looked at Lu Yu as she spoke, “Deer antler wine[1]Deer-antler wine, known as Lurongjiu, is also said to enhance sexual potency in men and to have a warming effect, aiding the joints.. It’s quite valuable.”

“Cough, cough—”

Jiang Nian choked on her chicken soup just after taking a sip, placing the bottle on the table and drinking a glass of water.

Lu Yu: …

He cleared his throat lightly, got up, and put the wine back in the cabinet. “Let’s eat.”

At night, Lu Yu went back to the dormitory to sleep, arranging for Feng Mei to share a room with Jiang Nian, and the two children to sleep in another room. By the time Feng Mei arrived, it was already afternoon, and after they finished with the day’s tasks, it was dark. Knowing that Lan Hui and Commander He were nearby, Feng Mei had Jiang Nian take her to Sister Lan’s house right after breakfast the next morning.

Lan Hui was at the literacy class, and they missed her.

Jiang Nian then took Feng Mei to the literacy class. Lan Hui and Feng Mei hadn’t seen each other in three or four years. When they first met, they didn’t even recognize each other and only became happy after saying their names.

At noon, they ate at Lan Hui’s house. Lan Hui also has two sons, about the same age as Song Xiangdong and Song Xianghong. The four children went back to the room to play, leaving Jiang Nian and the others alone in the living room.

Lan Hui tied on an apron and chopped vegetables in the kitchen, chatting with Feng Mei about the past few years. She then asked, “I see you’re quite familiar with Jiang Nian. Did you two know each other before?”

Feng Mei: …

How should she respond?

She glanced at Jiang Nian subconsciously. Jiang Nian blinked, looked up at Feng Mei, and heard Feng Mei say, “Ah, we, we’ve met before…” Did they not know each other? She anxiously looked at Jiang Nian, hoping she would quickly come up with something.

Jiang Nian: …

She picked up where Feng Mei left off, saying, “I used to work at the embroidery shop over there and often visited the military base to see Lu Yu. Over time, I got acquainted with Sister Feng.”

Lan Hui smiled, “I see.”

Feng Mei quickly nodded, “Yes, yes, that’s right.” Then she looked at Jiang Nian, “You’re right.”

Jiang Nian: …
