Chapter 117: I’ll Supervise You
This failure made Yu Xiangnian too lazy to bother creating opportunities. Instead of wasting time, she thought it would be better to focus on making money!
The next day, Cheng Jingmo was recalled to the army. It was unclear what was so important, as his sick leave hadn’t even ended yet, but he was called back.
Fortunately, he wasn’t assigned to any tasks and was working regular hours.
By early November, the temperature in Nancheng had dropped noticeably, with a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings.
One day, while Yu Xiangnian was working at home, Cheng Jingmo hurriedly returned.
“Yu Xiangnian, the military district needs your help!”
Yu Xiangnian looked up from her book, still wondering what help she could provide, when Cheng Jingmo continued.
“But everything you see and hear in the next few days must be kept confidential!” he said seriously.
Seeing his stern expression, Yu Xiangnian became serious as well, “What can I help with?”
“Just come with me, and we’ll talk on the way!”
They closed the door and walked quickly towards the military district. Cheng Jingmo quietly explained the details as they went.
Nancheng, located near the mountains and the sea, is an important military strategic area. With increasing international interactions in recent years, the military has also been trying to exchange and cooperate.
For the next three days, some military leaders from a neighboring country’s army would be visiting the Southern Theater Army headquarters for an exchange program. The military district had been preparing for this exchange for over half a month.
The translation department had been established for just over a year, and the staff had never been abroad. Although the preliminary translation materials were well-prepared, their actual communication with foreigners was still awkward, often requiring pauses to translate each sentence correctly.
There had even been two instances where translators didn’t understand and had to ask the other party to repeat themselves.
Such occasions were crucial for showcasing the good image of the Chinese military, and any flaw was unacceptable.
While these guests were visiting the Honor Hall, the military district leaders discussed finding two interpreters.
However, finding such professionals in this era was no easy task.
Cheng Jingmo suggested after some thought, “We could have Yu Xiangnian do the translation.”
The military district leaders were astonished!
They only knew that Yu Xiangnian had studied a bit more than others and were unaware of her experience abroad.
Cheng Jingmo added, “Her skills should be fine, but she’s not a soldier.”
All the content for these days was classified, and only the leaders, four members of the translation department, and seven selected outstanding soldiers, including Cheng Jingmo, were involved in this task.
The leaders were hesitant to decide, and Yu Jiashun also considered for a while before agreeing, “Call Yu Xiangnian! Have her sign a confidentiality agreement. I’ll guarantee it! If she leaks anything, I’ll be the first to deal with her!”
Initially, Yu Jiashun didn’t believe that Yu Xiangnian had the skills, but he trusted that Cheng Jingmo wouldn’t take on an uncertain task.
Yu Xiangnian stopped in her tracks, glancing sideways at Cheng Jingmo, “Aren’t you just setting me up?”
Cheng Jingmo stopped as well, “You won’t leak anything! Hurry up!”
Yu Xiangnian thought for a moment, then continued walking, “I won’t leak anything intentionally, but what if I happen to talk in my sleep?”
Cheng Jingmo walked beside her, “Not even in your dreams!”
“How can I control that?!” Yu Xiangnian said. “How about this, you supervise me while I sleep!”
“How would I supervise?” Cheng Jingmo asked, and as soon as he did, he thought of the answer, his ears turning red. “Yu Xiangnian, be serious! The upcoming situation is very important!”
Yu Xiangnian stopped again, acting petulant, “Then I’m not going! If I’m not careful, I might lose my life!”
Cheng Jingmo: “…”
Yu Xiangnian complained again, “Originally, I was trying to help you guys and ended up sacrificing myself. It’s such a bad deal for me! And besides, you want my dad to get involved personally—won’t that just make things worse for him…”
“I’ll supervise you!” Cheng Jingmo’s ears were red, but he looked at Yu Xiangnian with a determined gaze. “Starting today, I’ll supervise you and make sure you don’t leak any information.”
Yu Xiangnian forced herself to keep a straight face and said reluctantly, “That’s more like it. Let’s go!”
When they arrived at the site, the guests were still in the exhibition hall.
Yu Jiashun said with a serious expression, “Yu Xiangnian, I’m giving you one more chance to reconsider. If you don’t think you’re up to it, leave immediately. But if you take on this task and something goes wrong, you’ll have to face the consequences!”
Listen! Yu Xiangnian didn’t even flinch!
Yu Xiangnian couldn’t guarantee that there wouldn’t be any issues, so she said, “Commander Yu, I’ll do my best! If something goes wrong, then hold Cheng Jingmo responsible. He’s the one who suggested I come!”
Cheng Jingmo: “…” He really married a good wife!
However, he’d rather be held accountable than put Yu Xiangnian in a difficult position!
Seeing Yu Jiashun and Cheng Jingmo’s stunned expressions, Yu Xiangnian reassured him, “Commander Yu, relax. Let me tell you a secret—these people are just putting on a serious front in front of you. Foreign armies aren’t as strict with discipline as yours. They’re quite relaxed in their daily routine, unlike you guys who stand as straight as pine trees no matter where you are.”
“Don’t waste time. Show me the materials that are urgently needed today so I can prepare,” Yu Xiangnian added.
Yu Xiangnian quietly sat at a table, reviewing the materials. She read quickly and attentively, occasionally making notes.
The challenge in this translation was the technical jargon, especially the weaponry terms she had never heard of before.
As she made notes, she memorized the terms.
Cheng Jingmo watched her focused profile from afar. It felt like a beam of light shining into his heart, warming him and filling him with hope and brightness.
Yu Jiashun, on the other hand, felt both gratified and heartbroken.
He hadn’t expected that his daughter, who always troubled him, would help him at such a crucial moment, contributing to the military he had devoted his life to.
He remembered how he had cut off all her financial support and even threatened to break her legs to force her back to the country!
But if she hadn’t sneaked out, there wouldn’t be today!
In the meeting room, the interpretation work was left to Yu Xiangnian.
This was Cheng Jingmo’s first time witnessing live translation.
Yu Xiangnian sat slightly behind and to the side of Yu Jiashun, her head slightly lowered, holding a notebook and a pen.
She had come in a hurry and hadn’t done any grooming.
Wearing a simple white long-sleeve shirt with black pants, no makeup on her face, and her hair loosely tied back.
When she was thinking, her lips were tightly pressed, and her brows slightly furrowed.
As the other party spoke, she quickly wrote down notes. As soon as they finished speaking, she was able to deliver the translated content.
When the speaker talked for a long time, Yu Xiangnian’s lips pressed even tighter, and her pen moved rapidly.
Within four to five seconds after the other party finished speaking, she could deliver the translation.
Cheng Jingmo didn’t know if her translations were correct, but he felt that she was amazing and captivating!
