Chapter 128: I Like You
That evening, Xiao Jie, being very self-aware, went to bed early. Before falling asleep, he urged Cheng Jingmo twice to go and apologize to Yu Xiangnian as soon as possible.
Cheng Jingmo looked at Yu Xiangnian, who was still working, and felt a warm sensation in his heart.
Finally, the day had come when they could talk things through.
After Xiao Jie went to sleep, Cheng Jingmo pushed open Yu Xiangnian’s bedroom door.
It had been a long time since he had entered this room, and the feeling was both strange and familiar.
Scenes of their previous embraces and kisses in this room flashed through his mind.
Yu Xiangnian was still sitting on a chair, working. During the time spent caring for Xiao Jie at the hospital, although she could still work, her progress had fallen behind.
Hearing Cheng Jingmo close the door and enter, she kept her attention on the book and said, “We’ll talk later.”
Cheng Jingmo quietly sat on the edge of the bed and looked at Yu Xiangnian’s profile.
She had her head slightly lowered, reading the book, with her curled lashes fluttering. Her red lips were pressed together tightly—a sign she was deep in thought.
Cheng Jingmo sat there motionless for nearly twenty minutes, mesmerized by how captivating Yu Xiangnian looked when focused.
After finishing her task for the evening, Yu Xiangnian put down her pen and closed the book.
Cheng Jingmo quickly shifted his gaze, looking at the bedroom door and then at the ceiling light, pretending not to be watching Yu Xiangnian.
Yu Xiangnian turned her neck and looked at Cheng Jingmo, saying, “You go first.”
Cheng Jingmo’s gaze returned to her. His expression wasn’t as serious as Yu Xiangnian had imagined.
“Besides medical skills, what else can you do?” He added, “Not including cooking or laundry. I mean skills that you shouldn’t normally have.”
Yu Xiangnian answered without hesitation, “Nothing.”
Cheng Jingmo studied her eyes, trying to determine if she was lying. Yu Xiangnian met his gaze honestly.
After a moment, Cheng Jingmo said, “Then you promise you won’t do anything to harm the country or its people.”
Yu Xiangnian nonchalantly asked, “Why would I do such things?”
Cheng Jingmo said seriously, “Yu Xiangnian, you promise!”
Seeing Cheng Jingmo’s earnestness, Yu Xiangnian raised her right hand, “I promise! I will never do anything to harm the country or its people!”
Cheng Jingmo seamlessly continued, “If you do, regardless of who you are, I will not cover for you. I will hand you over for investigation.”
Yu Xiangnian nodded repeatedly, “Yes, yes, yes!”
Even if she were bored, she wouldn’t do such things.
Cheng Jingmo said, “I don’t have any other questions. It’s your turn to ask.”
“Huh?!” Yu Xiangnian’s mouth twitched involuntarily.
She had prepared herself for a relentless interrogation by Cheng Jingmo, but he had only asked one question and stopped.
Was he not going to hand her over for investigation?
“Cheng Jingmo, after thinking for so long, don’t you have anything else to ask?” she said incredulously.
Cheng Jingmo replied, “No.”
At the beginning, there had indeed been many questions—dozens of them—in his mind that urgently needed answers.
Thanks to Yu Xiangnian’s suggestion for them to take some time to calm down.
The more he thought calmly, the fewer questions he had.
He realized clearly that he liked Yu Xiangnian—liked her to the extent that he couldn’t be without her!
As long as she was Yu Xiangnian and didn’t do anything bad, what else mattered?
The only question he asked was just to know what other skills Yu Xiangnian had, so he could be prepared in case something happened in the future.
Yu Xiangnian still found it hard to believe and asked, “You’re not planning to send me for investigation, are you?!”
Cheng Jingmo replied, “No.”
He had never considered such a thing.
Yu Xiangnian looked at Cheng Jingmo with suspicion and said, “You make me feel anxious like this.”
Cheng Jingmo earnestly said, “Yu Xiangnian, don’t worry. I won’t hand you over.”
“Oh…” Yu Xiangnian felt a sense of relief.
After a pause, she said, “Cheng Jingmo, let’s get a divorce.”
She said it half-seriously.
If something were to happen to her, Cheng Jingmo would inevitably be implicated, and his future would be uncertain. She didn’t want to drag him down.
While they weren’t yet at the stage where love was inseparable, it was better to part ways and let each other find peace.
The other half was to test Cheng Jingmo’s attitude.
Cheng Jingmo had definitely considered this issue—how would he choose between his future and her?
“Huh?!” Now it was Cheng Jingmo’s turn to be in disbelief.
He had been waiting for them to reconcile tonight, but Yu Xiangnian was asking for a divorce?!
Cheng Jingmo’s throat felt blocked, and it took him a while to find his voice. “W-Why do you want a divorce?”
Yu Xiangnian presented her theory: about his promising future, how she didn’t want to drag him down, and so on.
After listening, Cheng Jingmo lowered his eyes.
In this matter, he had already set aside his own future.
In the past, he had worked hard and strived for a good future, aiming to provide the best life possible for Yu Xiangnian.
But if Yu Xiangnian were to get into trouble…
He had said before that he wouldn’t let her be lonely and afraid.
Seeing Cheng Jingmo with his head bowed in thought, Yu Xiangnian thought he was hesitating.
This was within her expectations; any man would first consider his own future.
But she was still somewhat disappointed.
Suppressing her feelings of disappointment, she continued, “Look, marrying me was originally arranged by our families. It was only because I actively pursued you during this time that you developed some feelings for me. Since this relationship is not deep, let’s part ways. You should find someone you like and marry them to live a good life.”
Her heartfelt words made it seem to Cheng Jingmo that Yu Xiangnian was indeed serious about the divorce.
Cheng Jingmo kept his head bowed and remained silent for a long time.
Yu Xiangnian moved from disappointment to despair.
As the saying goes: “I hope I’m not the result of your weighing pros and cons, but a firm choice.”
Cheng Jingmo’s prolonged deliberation made any choice he made irrelevant.
Yu Xiangnian was now truly considering divorce.
“Let’s do it this way. We’ll go get the divorce certificate when we find the time,” Yu Xiangnian said with a detached tone. “It’s late now. You should go out and rest.”
“No divorce!” Cheng Jingmo’s eyelids lifted, and he stared at Yu Xiangnian.
Yu Xiangnian saw that his eyes were red.
“I won’t fall in love with anyone else,” he said.
Yu Xiangnian dismissed this as nonsense. “Go rest. We’ll find time to get divorced.”
Every couple who breaks up often believes they will never love anyone else again, but within a year, they usually find someone else.
Such words are just talk—taking them seriously means losing.
“No divorce!” Cheng Jingmo, seeing Yu Xiangnian’s impatient expression, had even redder eyes. “Yu Xiangnian, I’ve liked you for a long time… I’ve always liked you!”
