Chapter 24.2

Unexpectedly, Wen Yue nodded and agreed with a bright smile, “Sure, you feed me.”

Zhou Yao: “?”

Did she just take the bait?

He laughed, quickly peeling the egg and bringing the smooth, tender, round egg to Wen Yue’s mouth. With a lazy, low, and magnetic voice, he said, “Alright, I’ll serve you. Open your mouth.”

Seeing the slightly teasing smile on Zhou Yao’s face, Wen Yue felt a bit embarrassed.

Zhou Yao nudged her full, beautiful lips with the egg, “Open your mouth, eat.”

Wen Yue: “…” What a suggestive conversation.

“I’ll just do it myself,” she said, not having the thick skin for this. She took the now-cooled egg from Zhou Yao’s hand and started taking small bites.

Zhou Yao clicked his tongue again.

After breakfast, the two locked the door and walked out. It was still very dark, making it hard to see the road. Zhou Yao turned on his flashlight to light the way ahead and reminded Wen Yue to watch her step.

She still vividly remembered tripping and falling flat on her face after returning from the hospital.

“Got it, got it,” Wen Yue replied softly, feeling that Zhou Yao was a bit nagging.

They walked along the field path to the village entrance, where two figures stood—one tall, one short. It was Ren Yeliang and Fang Shitao.

“Sister-in-law, Brother!” They greeted, their eyes simultaneously landing on Zhou Yao as if discovering a new continent, exclaiming, “Brother, when did you get new clothes? They look great!”

Zhou Yao’s thin lips curled upward, carrying a hint of pride as he casually explained, “Oh, this shirt? It was personally made by your sister-in-law.” He emphasized the words “personally made” as he raised his hand to smooth out some wrinkles in the shirt.

Ren Yeliang and Fang Shitao were genuinely envious and jealous.

“Sister-in-law! My dear sister-in-law!” Ren Yeliang’s eyes showed longing, “I also want…”

Zhou Yao cut him off with a black face, “What are you thinking? Get lost, if you want one, find yourself a wife to make it for you.”

What was he thinking? This is his wife. No other man is allowed to have clothes made by her! Even his younger brother is not an exception!

Ren Yeliang could only swallow his words with tears.

Damn, Brother Yao is really stingy! But this shirt does look good—very good. Brother Yao looks so handsome in it—not like a rural person at all, more like a city scholar… Oh, that’s if he doesn’t speak. Once he opens his mouth, his true nature is exposed, and all the elegance is gone.

Ren Yeliang’s eyes fell on Wen Yue, noticing she was also wearing a loose white shirt today. The shirt was a bit large, with the hem tucked into the waistband of her wide-legged jeans, making her legs look long. Her thick, dark hair was tied into a full bun at the back of her head, making her already small face look even smaller. Standing next to Zhou Yao, they matched perfectly, like the golden boy and jade girl under the Goddess of Mercy.

“Brother, sister-in-law, your clothes look similar today. It’s clear you’re a couple,” Ren Yeliang complimented with a laugh. “One handsome, one pretty. What’s that term? Golden boy and jade girl, a match made in heaven!” Wow, he even knew idioms!

Zhou Yao felt thoroughly pleased, giving him a sidelong glance, “You’re good with words. You two haven’t had breakfast, right? I cooked some extra eggs before leaving, take them to fill your stomachs.”

“Just knew brother is good to us,” Ren Yeliang said, taking the eggs and splitting them with Fang Shitao.

Fang Shitao thanked awkwardly, “Thank you, Brother Yao.”

Zhou Yao didn’t respond.

Wen Yue stood by with a light smile, watching their interaction. Her gaze lingered on Zhou Yao’s face for a moment. He might seem annoyed with Ren Yeliang and Fang Shitao, but he actually treated them very well—a man who says one thing and means another.

“Eat while walking, don’t waste time.”

The four of them walked along the bumpy dirt road outside the village.

It was still very early. Usually, tricycle drivers wouldn’t come this early, but luck was on their side today. After walking a few minutes, they saw a tricycle at the intersection ahead, with a few people scattered in the back.

Zhou Yao helped them get on.

The back of the tricycle was high. Wen Yue stepped on the footrest and was pulled up by Zhou Yao.

He had Wen Yue sit on the outermost spot, pressing himself close to her. His strong arm reached around her to grip the iron handrail. The compartment was made of bamboo, steel bars, and thick fabric, looking quite simple. The seats were hard wooden boards, uncomfortable to sit on.

In this position, it seemed like Wen Yue was snuggled into Zhou Yao’s arms.

She didn’t think much of it, but the tricycle looked somewhat unsafe, making her nervous as she clutched Zhou Yao’s wrist.

It didn’t take long for the tricycle to start, driving over the bumpy dirt road, jostling them around. Wen Yue felt like her butt was going to be split into four, frowning in discomfort.

Zhou Yao sat steadily, looking at her sideways and asking in a low voice, “What’s wrong? Is there a needle under your seat?”

“Uncomfortable,” Wen Yue pouted. “The wooden board is too hard; it hurts with all the bumps.”

Zhou Yao didn’t say anything, loosening his grip on the handrail behind her and placing his hand on Wen Yue’s waist. With a slight exertion, he lifted her onto his spread right thigh, “Then sit on my leg.”

The warmth from his palm seeped through the thin fabric, heating her skin, her butt pressed tightly against his firm thigh.

Wen Yue froze, sitting up straight, her hands placed properly on her lap, not moving an inch.

But she had to admit, Zhou Yao’s thigh was indeed much more comfortable than the wooden board seat of the tricycle.

At first, Wen Yue was a bit uncomfortable, but as time passed, her stiff body gradually relaxed, even adjusting to a comfortable position and leaning back against Zhou Yao’s arm.

Zhou Yao, however, dared not move at all.

The soft and delicate body against him made him inexplicably nervous, his heart in turmoil, worried that holding her too tightly might hurt her but too loose, and she might bounce off. When they reached the county town and got off the tricycle, his arm and leg were completely numb.

“Are your legs numb?” Wen Yue asked, feeling a bit embarrassed.

Zhou Yao pursed his lips, shook his head, and smiled, “With your weight, it’s like nothing at all.”

Wen Yue touched her face, “I must have gained a few pounds.”
