Chapter 187: Vicious
Cheng Shuan locked, smiling nonchalantly, “Still, sister-in-law is generous! Helping Dong Ju with water and dealing with her man. Sister-in-law, if you say Brother Jianwa is kind-hearted, why does he only help Dong Ju among so many people?”
Yu Xiangnian sneered, “If he helped someone else, you’d say he should help others too, not just this person.”
“I can’t argue with you. Fine then!” Cheng Shuan locked said indignantly, “If something really happens, just don’t cry!”
Yu Xiangnian trusted Cheng Jingmo. Even if something did happen, she wouldn’t be the one crying.
She disdainfully said, “If something really happens, I definitely won’t be the one crying!”
She wanted Cheng Jingmo to be the one crying and regretting his actions!
That night, when everyone at home had gone to bed, voices calling “Uncle Jianwa, Auntie” came from outside.
Cheng Jingmo and Yu Xiangnian were also preparing to sleep. Hearing the voices, they were both surprised.
Yu Xiangnian asked, “Who is it? The voice sounds familiar,” but she couldn’t recall who it was.
“It’s Houzi,” Cheng Jingmo said, who had a good memory. He got up, dressed, and went outside. “You go to sleep. I’ll go check.”
Yu Xiangnian heard the conversation between Houzi and Cheng Jingmo.
Houzi said, “Uncle Jianwa, I came to ask Auntie to remove some stitches.”
Cheng Jingmo replied, “It’s dark at night. If you can’t see well, come back tomorrow.”
Yu Xiangnian called from the room, “Cheng Jingmo, let him in.”
Houzi must have been very busy during the day to come so late.
Cheng Jingmo lit an oil lamp and waited with Houzi in the main room.
Yu Xiangnian dressed, opened the door, and went to the main room. “Cheng Jingmo, find me a pair of scissors.”
Cheng Jingmo said, “Without good lighting, I’m worried you might hurt the wound.”
Yu Xiangnian retorted, “You think so little of me?”
“Not at all.”
Cheng Jingmo held the oil lamp over Houzi’s head while Yu Xiangnian took the scissors from him. Grabbing one end of the suture, she cut and pulled, and the stitch was removed.
The whole process took less than ten seconds, and Cheng Jingmo was stunned.
He knew Yu Xiangnian was skilled in medicine; she could perform surgeries that others couldn’t.
But knowing is one thing, seeing it in person is another.
His wife was so capable!
Houzi was also surprised at how quickly it was done. Seeing the stitches in Yu Xiangnian’s hand, he asked, “Auntie, it’s already done?”
Yu Xiangnian replied, “It’s done. Just remember to keep the wound dry and clean.”
Houzi scratched his head. “Thanks.”
Yu Xiangnian said, “No need to be polite. Go back quickly.”
Houzi then turned to Cheng Jingmo and said, “Uncle, come out with me for a moment. I need to tell you something.”
Cheng Jingmo didn’t return for quite a while.
He got back into bed, held Yu Xiangnian tightly, and whispered in her ear, “The fish has taken the bait.”
Yu Xiangnian was both delighted and a bit worried. “How did Houzi find out?”
“He heard it by accident when he went to feed the cows at the production team’s barn tonight.”
Yu Xiangnian sighed in relief. “So he’s worried about you and came to tell us so late?”
Cheng Jingmo kissed her face. “Yes, this is the good result of your kindness.”
Yu Xiangnian pushed him away. “You must think I’m very ruthless!”
“No,” Cheng Jingmo said. “They reap what they sow.”
Actually, when Yu Xiangnian proposed her idea that night, Cheng Jingmo was indeed startled.
It wasn’t exactly ruthless; it was more of an unconventional approach.
But given how difficult divorce was and their lack of time to stay here, it was undoubtedly the best solution.
Yu Xiangnian asked again, disbelieving, “Really not?”
“Guaranteed not,” Cheng Jingmo said, “You’re smarter than me to come up with such a method.”
“That’s good to know,” Yu Xiangnian warned him, “In the future, if you wrong me, expect a similar outcome.”
Cheng Jingmo replied, “I wouldn’t dare.”
Two days later.
After lunch, Dong Ju came over and invited Cheng Jingmo and Yu Xiangnian to her home for dinner.
Yu Xiangnian and Cheng Jingmo exchanged glances, showing some hesitation. “Dong Ju, is it convenient for you?”
Dong Ju shook her head repeatedly. “No, no, it’s not inconvenient. Dong Xingwang asked me to invite you. Also, my mother has been talking about it for a while, saying that Brother Jianwa’s visit is rare, and she’s been wanting to invite you over for a meal!”
Cheng Jingmo said, “I have some things to do this afternoon, so we might arrive a bit later. Please delay dinner a bit.”
Dong Ju happily nodded. “It’s fine, just that you can come is enough!”
When going to someone’s home for a meal, it’s customary to bring something.
Yu Xiangnian prepared to bring some dried seafood she had brought from South City.
During their time at home, they hadn’t had any seafood. They had eaten half during the meal preparation and gave some to Uncle San, so there should still be quite a bit left.
But despite searching the kitchen, she couldn’t find any.
It was obvious that Mu Huanzhen had put it away to keep for later.
Cheng Jingmo bought 30 pounds of flour, some brown sugar, and eggs from the supply and marketing cooperative.
If Yu Xiangnian hadn’t stopped him, he would have bought more.
“Bringing too many things makes Dong Ju’s family uncomfortable, as if they invited you just for your gifts.”
Cheng Jingmo just wanted to repay the kindness from years ago.
After everyone at home had finished their afternoon meal, Cheng Jingmo and Yu Xiangnian set off, not bringing Xiao Jie with them.
By the time they arrived at Dong Ju’s house, the sun had already set, and it would be dark soon.
Dong Ju’s mother complained, “Brother Jianwa, you’re just coming over for a meal. Why did you bring so many things?”
Yu Xiangnian smiled and said, “Auntie, it was me who bought them. I didn’t know the customs here and might have bought things that aren’t suitable. Please don’t mind.”
Dong Ju’s mother said, “That’s not what I meant. How could I let you spend so much?”
Yu Xiangnian said, “These things aren’t expensive. Don’t worry about it.”
Dong Xingwang didn’t want to see them exchanging pleasantries and pushed Cheng Jingmo’s arm. “Come on! Let’s eat! The meal has been ready for a while, just waiting for you.”
Everyone took their seats, and Dong Xingwang started pouring wine.
Yu Xiangnian noticed that Dong Ju, her mother, and her children were all looking nervous.
Maybe they were reacting to seeing Dong Xingwang drink!
Cheng Jingmo said, “My wife doesn’t drink, and I can’t hold my liquor. Pour less for me.”
Dong Xingwang placed a large glass of wine in front of Cheng Jingmo. “Men should drink heartily and eat meat!”
“Come on, let’s have a toast!” Dong Xingwang raised his glass.
Cheng Jingmo raised his glass and clinked it with Dong Xingwang’s, taking a small sip.
After the meal, it was completely dark.
Cheng Jingmo and Dong Xingwang had finished their third glass of wine. After consuming six or seven liang of baijiu, both were somewhat drunk.
When Dong Xingwang poured the fourth glass of wine, Yu Xiangnian said, “Cheng Jingmo, it’s late. We should go home!”
Cheng Jingmo, already tipsy, waved his hand. “We’re not going back! I haven’t had a proper chat with Auntie yet!”
Yu Xiangnian frowned. “At this hour, everyone is going to sleep. You’re disturbing Dong Ju’s family!”
Cheng Jingmo’s face also fell. “If you want to go, go alone!”
Yu Xiangnian stood up abruptly.
