Chapter 16: “Can I Wear Your Pajamas?”
Once back in the room, the two of them separated.
Fu Jianzhi said with a hint of mockery, “Madam, you are truly clever.”
“Thank you, thank you,” Mu Ruo pretended not to catch his meaning. “It’s innate.”
Fu Jianzhi was almost amused to the point of laughing at her.
Mu Ruo had never been the type to easily endure humiliation.
Under someone’s roof, one has to lower their head.
For the wealthy Fu General who provided her with money, Mu Ruo reluctantly lowered her head.
For the unfamiliar Zhou Niannian, Mu Ruo certainly did not want to endure her anger.
What could be more infuriating than flirting with Fu Jianzhi in front of Zhou Niannian?
Nothing, absolutely nothing.
During dinner that evening, Fu Jianzhi’s two younger uncles arrived.
Fu Jianzhi’s second uncle, Fu Quan, had a slick appearance, while his third uncle, Fu Zheng, wore glasses and looked much more refined.
These two men were younger than Fu Jianzhi; Fu’s elderly father had these two sons late in life and cherished them dearly.
Zhou Yanhui loved her two sons even more.
She regarded Fu Jianzhi as a thorn in her side and wished he would disappear quickly so her two precious sons could inherit everything from the Fu family.
Unfortunately, because of Fu Jianzhi’s father, Fu’s elderly father felt guilty toward Fu Jianzhi.
Over the years, the Fu family had never lacked material support for Fu Jianzhi.
Fu’s elderly father did not particularly like Mu Ruo.
To him, Mu Ruo’s humble background was not worthy of Fu Jianzhi.
In other respects, Fu’s elderly father dared to impose on Fu Jianzhi.
Given the previous issues in the Fu family, Fu’s elderly father would never force Fu Jianzhi in matters of the heart.
“You and Jianzhi should be good to each other,” Fu’s elderly father seriously advised Mu Ruo. “Have a child soon to give the Fu family an heir.”
Mu Ruo nodded.
Fu’s elderly father was somewhat pleased to see that she did not argue or resist his words.
Zhou Yanhui did not want Fu’s elderly father’s attention to remain focused on Mu Ruo and Fu Jianzhi.
Fu Quan and Fu Zheng were both eloquent and humorous. They sat next to Fu’s elderly father, talking about fresh and interesting things that made him laugh heartily.
Zhou Yanhui listened with a smile and occasionally served them dishes.
With Fu’s elderly father’s attention drawn to his younger sons, he no longer paid any attention to Fu Jianzhi.
Mu Ruo: “…”
For some reason, although this was Fu Jianzhi’s home, Mu Ruo felt that Fu Jianzhi seemed like an outsider here.
The maid had mentioned during the day that Fu Jianzhi lost his parents when he was very young.
Did that mean Fu Jianzhi had been living alone like this for over twenty years?
Long-term neglect and lack of care can easily make a person become introverted.
However, Fu Jianzhi was polite to women, charming in conversations, and appeared to have no psychological issues.
One can imagine how exceptional the psychological state of a successful person must be.
…No wonder he is a successful individual.
Mu Ruo’s mind wandered as she watched Zhou Yanhui continuously serve her two sons. She also served a mushroom to Fu Jianzhi.
Fu Jianzhi glanced at her but did not eat the mushroom she served.
Mu Ruo: “…”
She used serving chopsticks, so it wasn’t a matter of Fu Jianzhi finding her unclean.
Mu Ruo thought he was quite picky and served him a shrimp instead.
This time, Fu Jianzhi ate it.
From start to finish, Fu Jianzhi said not a word.
After dinner, Mu Ruo followed Fu Jianzhi back to the room.
Having spent the previous night in the same hotel room, Mu Ruo was no longer surprised by sharing a room again today. However, unlike last night when Fu Jianzhi slept in the bed and she only briefly dozed off when she saw he was alright at dawn, Mu Ruo knew she might not handle another restless night well.
“Um…” Mu Ruo said, “Can I sleep in the bed tonight? It looks quite spacious.”
Fu Jianzhi lit a cigarette, his lean, handsome face appearing somewhat gloomy amidst the smoke. This was in stark contrast to the gentle image she had of him when they first met.
For some reason, Mu Ruo felt that there was a hint of cruelty and restlessness in Fu Jianzhi’s eyes, making him seem a bit dangerous and frightening.
It was only for a moment.
As the cigarette was extinguished, he put on a warm mask and showed a faint smile. “Sure.”
Mu Ruo felt she must have misinterpreted his earlier look.
She cautiously asked, “Mr. Fu, are you okay?”
“Miss Mu,” Fu Jianzhi said lightly, “For your own safety, don’t try to concern yourself with me or get to know me.”
Mu Ruo replied, “Why? Is the world going to end?”
Fu Jianzhi was amused by her question and opened the bathroom door. “The world won’t end, but you might.”
When he returned from the shower, he had changed into a set of black silk pajamas.
Perhaps handsome men look good in black, and Fu Jianzhi was no exception.
With his deep features, he looked somewhat gentle when he smiled, but when not smiling, his presence was aloof and unapproachable.
While Fu Jianzhi was showering, Mu Ruo thought about his earlier words.
Fu Jianzhi was undoubtedly dangerous.
Sometimes, those who appear mild-mannered are actually the masterminds behind everything.
It was also clear that Fu Jianzhi disliked women.
He was an attractive man, aware of his superiority, and surrounded by countless women, which even made him feel annoyed.
His earlier comment was likely a warning to prevent Mu Ruo from becoming entangled with him like Zhou Niannian and other admirers.
Mu Ruo explained, “Well, I have someone I care about.”
Fu Jianzhi’s narrow eyes coldly fixed on her, making it hard to discern his thoughts.
Mu Ruo continued, “You know, I really love Lu Beichen… I could never fall for someone else, so you don’t need to worry about me pursuing you. Also… I don’t have pajamas. It’s not good to sleep without them. Can I borrow one of yours?”
“Absolutely not—”
Mu Ruo had anticipated his refusal. “I’ve already looked through your wardrobe. This black top seems nice; I can use it as a nightgown.”
— Of course, it was nice.
His wardrobe was full of black clothing, including his underwear.
With the boss’s nod, Mu Ruo took the clothes and went into the bathroom.
Fu Jianzhi’s bathroom was larger than the bedroom she had stayed in before. She quickly took a shower, dried her hair, and emerged.
At 1.88 meters tall, Fu Jianzhi’s shirt was more than sufficient as a nightgown for her.
Fu Jianzhi was sitting on the bed with a laptop, likely handling emails.
Exhausted from a restless night and a full day’s activities, Mu Ruo didn’t even glance at Fu Jianzhi. She fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
