Chapter 35
Xu Zhilu paused, staring at the message. Before she could reply, another message came in.
Shen Siyan: So, I can’t comment on the others.
Xu Zhilu lowered her eyes, stunned for a moment. Before she could react, Tang Meng next to her screamed, “Ahhhhhhhh Zhilu!!! How could your friend be so good! He’s flirting with you, can’t you see?”
“Oh my god! That’s so sweet!!!”
Xu Zhilu came back to her senses, stared at Shen Siyan’s messages for a moment, and asked in confusion, “Isn’t it too vulgar?”
Tang Meng stared at her with wide eyes. “What did you say?”
Xu Zhilu: “That’s right. It’s too greasy.”
Tang Meng choked. She stared at Xu Zhilu suspiciously for a while, then reached out and pinched her face. “Do you really think so?”
Xu Zhilu nodded.
Tang Meng was speechless. She was silent for a moment, not knowing what to say. She looked at her phone interface and said, “Let’s not talk about whether this is greasy or not. I think your classmate is definitely interested in you.”
She looked at Xu Zhilu with burning eyes, expressing her meaning with her most sincere eyes. “Really, you have to believe me.”
Xu Zhilu was quiet, not knowing what to say. “I don’t think so.” She was still denying herself. “I think it’s because he only knows me, so he only watched my performance.”
Tang Meng looked at her in disbelief, as if she were a caveman. “Zhilu, what species are you?” She was surprised. “Why don’t you believe that your friend likes you?”
Xu Zhilu didn’t know how to explain. She remained silent and looked at Tang Meng. “I don’t know how to put it, but it’s just impossible.”
Tang Meng rolled her eyes. “I suddenly feel a little sympathetic towards the person who is pursuing you.”
Xu Zhilu: “…”
After Tang Meng left, Xu Zhilu stared at the message sent by Shen Siyan for a long time, wanting to reply to something, but in the end, she didn’t reply at all. She really didn’t know how to respond.
Shen Siyan sent a question mark.
Xu Zhilu pretended not to see it.
He continued.
Shen Siyan: ? Why don’t you ask?
Xu Zhilu was speechless and then found an excuse. What are you asking? My dance classmate asked me to ask you.
Shen Siyan: Oh, I thought you wanted to know.
Xu Zhilu: I don’t want to know.
Shen Siyan looked at the message on his phone and could probably imagine the expression on her face when she typed this sentence. He laughed silently and stopped teasing her.
Shen Siyan: Are you almost done eating? Call me when you’re done.
Xu Zhilu: Not that fast.
She didn’t chat with Shen Siyan anymore and continued to blend into the dinner environment. There were acquaintances and strangers. Xu Zhilu didn’t like communicating with strangers. Except for occasionally saying a few words to classmates and teachers in the dance studio, she basically ate quietly alone.
When the celebration banquet was about to end, Tang Meng came over and whispered to her, “Do you want to take a taxi back with everyone else?”
Xu Zhilu was about to nod when she suddenly remembered an important point. “I have to send a message to my friend.”
Hearing this, Tang Meng looked at her teasingly. “Ha Ha Ha! Is your friend coming to pick you up?”
“No way.” Xu Zhilu said. “This place is a bit far from the hotel we are staying at.”
Tang Meng turned and looked at her. “How about we make a bet?”
Xu Zhilu looked at her in surprise. “What are you betting on?”
“What do you think about betting that your friend will come and pick you up in person?”
Xu Zhilu: …There’s no point in betting; he definitely won’t come.”
Tang Meng snorted twice. “Don’t worry about whether it’s interesting or not, just tell me whether you want to bet or not.”
Xu Zhilu looked at Tang Meng’s confident expression, then thought about her understanding of Shen Siyan. “Bet.” She smiled. “I bet he won’t come. It’s too far from here.”
“I bet he’ll come, so call now. I’m leaving soon.”
“Oh.”
Xu Zhilu slipped out of the room and went to the corner to call Shen Siyan.
“Is it over?” Shen Siyan’s clear voice came through, especially in the night.
Xu Zhilu touched her ear and hummed softly. “It’s almost over. Why did you ask me to call you?” She asked, “Have you returned to the hotel for dinner? Do you want me to bring you some takeout?”
Hearing this, Shen Siyan chuckled. “No need.”
He paused. “How are you getting back to the hotel?”
“I’ll take a taxi with everyone.”
Shen Siyan understood. “Is it safe?”
“The teachers are all here. It’s safe. What’s going on?”
Shen Siyan was silent for a few seconds. “Do you need me to come over?”
Xu Zhilu was startled. “Where would you come? Here?”
“Yes.”
Xu Zhilu looked up at the dark sky. There were no stars in the big city, and even the moon wasn’t very clear. She felt the cool evening breeze and was silent for a few seconds before saying, “No, the hotel is too far. I can go back with them.”
Shen Siyan didn’t force it. “Then get in the car and share your location with me.”
Xu Zhilu pouted. “Okay.”
After hanging up the phone, she walked back inside.
Tang Meng looked at her. “How did it go?”
Xu Zhilu smiled and stretched out her hand. “Come on, you lose.”
Tang Meng’s eyes widened. “How is that possible? Did I guess wrong?”
“Yes.”
Xu Zhilu said, “I told you he wouldn’t come to pick me up. It’s too far.” She raised her eyebrows and looked at Tang Meng. “I know him.”
Tang Meng stroked her chin and looked at her. “Did you stop him from coming?”
“No.”
“Didn’t he ask you if you wanted him to pick you up?”
Xu Zhilu was silent.
Seeing Xu Zhilu’s expression, Tang Meng knew she had guessed right. “Did I guess right?” She asked in surprise. “He asked, and you refused?”
Xu Zhilu nodded helplessly. “But he just asked casually.”
Tang Meng shook her head. “But if you had said you needed him, he would have come. So you lose, and I win.”
Xu Zhilu was speechless for a moment. She stared at Tang Meng for a while and muttered, “Why don’t you stop dancing and become a fortune teller instead?”
Tang Meng burst out laughing, hooked her shoulder, and said, “It’s not possible for others, but yours is too obvious. Anyone with a normal mind can guess it.”
Hearing this, Xu Zhilu understood a little and pointed at herself. “You mean… my thinking is not normal?”
Tang Meng nodded. “Didn’t you notice that you’re very resistant to this matter?” She lowered her head and looked at Xu Zhilu. “Have you ever suffered a serious emotional injury? It seems like you don’t like talking about relationships.”
Xu Zhilu was silent. The two looked at each other for a while, and she said seriously, “You could really make money by going into fortune-telling.”
Tang Meng: “…”
The two chatted for a while. After the celebration, they took a taxi back with their teacher and classmates. Along the way, Tang Meng never stopped her divergent thinking and kept guessing for various reasons. In the end, Xu Zhilu ignored her.
Tang Meng looked at her and smiled. After entering the hotel elevator, she whispered, “Zhilu, I think you should seriously consider it. For some things, you have to think about them before you can get results.”
Xu Zhilu did not deny this. She nodded and looked at Tang Meng. “I understand, Sister Tang Meng.”
Their rooms were not far apart, just next door to each other. After entering the room, Xu Zhilu sent a message to Shen Siyan, saying that they had arrived. Shen Siyan replied immediately.
In the next few days, the two maintained a lukewarm contact. Xu Zhilu followed her teacher to another city, but Shen Siyan did not follow her this time. He went home. He did go back, but for the entire summer, he was always present in Xu Zhilu’s life.
He would send messages to Xu Zhilu every day and chat with her about daily life, such as how Shen Man was complaining about him again, saying she regretted having a son like him, and asking when the dance performance would end.
Although Xu Zhilu felt puzzled, she also enjoyed the communication and interaction with Shen Siyan. She couldn’t say why, but it felt quite comfortable. She didn’t want too much and just let things flow, getting along harmoniously. She thought this was good enough. She didn’t ask for too much and didn’t guess what the future would be like.
Throughout the summer vacation, besides dancing, Xu Zhilu also participated in a national English speech competition. She felt busy and fulfilled. She was lucky and won second place in the national English speaking competition. She didn’t get the 10,000 yuan prize, but she still got 8,000 yuan, which was enough.
