Yuanying left after the conversation without mentioning the Imperial Censor. Chengqian heard about their little meeting and was curious to know the advice that Xiao Deyan gave young uncle.
To his surprise, he got to know that Li Yuanying didn’t ask for any solution.
“That’s surprising. I thought he would ask you for tips on how to write a satisfactory report for his Majesty.”
“A satisfactory report in the eyes of the Emperor, His Highness Prince Teng might already know how to do it.” It is not that Li Yuanying didn’t know what to write, but more of him not wanting to do it. All Yuanying needed to do is write what the public wants to hear and then all would be forgiven. After all, an Imperial Censor shouldn’t be nitpicking on people’s faults. But Li Yuanying disagrees that he had done something wrong and so is not willing to lower his head.
Li Chengqian was quiet.
Yuanying went home and started on his article again. While he was writing, tears started forming in his eyes and he started wiping them away. Huang Ying and Huang Li were concern but they didn’t dare disturb the Prince. One person stayed by his side silently, while another ran looking for Lady Liu.
Lady Liu was alarmed and felt horrible so she stepped forward to comfort the boy.
“What’s the matter my child?”
Yuanying sees mother’s worried face and quickly wiped away the tears. “It’s nothing. I became emotional while doing my homework. Brother wants me to work hard on this and I became too engrossed in it.”
Lady Liu hug her child and comforted, “If the Jishi exam is too difficult then let’s not do it. You’re the Emperor’s brother, why do you need to take exams.”
“It’s nothing to do with the exams.” Yuanying quickly finish up his work, comforted his mom and went to deliver his homework to the Emperor with red eyes.
Li Er didn’t meet the boy and only asked for the article to be receive.
Yuanying made two circles outside the meeting hall and left for his residence to read more books. He still need to prepare for his exams!
“This humble servant saw Prince Teng with red eyes while he delivered this.”
Li Er scrunched his eyebrows.
This brat, when did he become a cry baby?
The Emperor read the letter. Yuanying no longer mention anything about the incident with the Imperial Censor but instead wrote about a story.
In this story, two brother lost their parents early in childhood. The younger sibling was raised by his brother and they had a prosperous business that needed many staffs in management. Everything was proceeding smoothly and in proper order. Within the management office there were good staffs and bad ones. There were some who like to criticize the younger brother and some even accused him of trying to steal what’s precious to the older brother and tried to sabotage their relationship.
The brothers were supposed to be closed and family, why should this relationship become strained because of outsiders?
Even more hateful is the children in the family were also all criticized over little things like eating too much or being wasteful over ordering 2 extra set of clothing or the occasional hunting. They are so pitiful. Do those who criticize them not eat or spend money or have hobbies? Why do they pick on children who have lost their mothers?
The pair of pitiful brothers who have no one to defend them. All they can do is endure the scoldings hurled at them.
Why are people so mean that they bully these orphaned brothers?
The Emperor’s forehead twitched. As long as you’re not stupid, you know who the subject of the story is about.
Credit must be given to Li Yuanying for writing the piece well. His descriptions were lively and the plot smooth. Li Er felt a sense of sadness and anger reading it. He’s right, why are people bully them? When it comes to Country affairs not many contribute bold ideas but when it comes to petty issues related to the Royal family they make a big fuss out of it. Why are people even picking on Li Yuanying for asking 2 servants to do work? Did the imperial court set up the Censorate just to let people gain fame from stepping on the royal family?!
Yuanying asked the same question in his article. Then Yuanying changed his tone and wrote a proposal that shocked His Majesty: Since many are keeping an eye on the private affairs of the royal family, for the sake of fairness, the royal family should also establish a special supervision division to keep an eye on the private affairs of the ministers and to expose and publicize any private affairs. You are all important ministers so how can family affairs be considered private affairs? What if someone uses personal connections to buy positions or collude with officials or businessmen?
Therefore, for the sake of the citizens we should tightly govern the officials too! It is best to separate reporting and evidence collection. Let’s set up an agency specifically to verify the content of the report. They will be responsible for searching for evidence with a warrant. That way it is fair and just. We will not let any corrupt official go, and will not wrongly blame any loyal minister!
Finally, Yuanying wrote that he had deeply reflected on his mistakes and accepted the ideology. He just felt that it should be done fairly and everyone should be subjected to the same intensity of supervision. Next time if I accuse you of harassing your brother’s wife, you should accept an investigation obediently, and shouldn’t blame me for talking nonsense.
Yuanying wrote several thousand words and even listed down the structure and functions of his proposed supervision agency in detail. His Majesty was so angry that veins popped out of his forehead. He wanted to summon Li Yuanying to scold him, but he felt powerless and didn’t know how to start.
Of course, if there is a need, the Emperor has the ability to set up such a task force. After all, this is how he receives secret reports. No one had so bluntly put it into words as it would be too shameless to do so.
When the water is too clear, there will be no fish!
Li Er closed his eyes and summon the censor that Li Yuanying had offended.
Compared to the embarrassing look he had yesterday, the censor is neatly dressed but still had a bad expression. He’s feeling bad because the Emperor did not reprimand Li Yuanying and he lost face among his colleagues! He was the first censor to be treated like this. If the Emperor won’t punish Li Yuanying, how will he gain a foothold in the Censorate moving forward!
The censor was thinking about whether to hit the pillar or resign, but the Emperor did not give him any chance to do so. He show him Li Yuanying’s article.
The censor’s plans was interrupted and he was dissatisfied, but he didn’t dare to disobey. The censor wanted to vomit blood after reading the first half of the article. He always knew that Li Yuanying was shameless, but he did not expect him to be so shameless. The two brothers had enjoyed everything in life but he wrote them as pitiful little cabbages?! They are lonely people? ! Don’t they have dozen of people serving them? Does the Emperor have few concubines? He has more than a dozen children but he still has the nerve claim that he is lonely?!
If the censor read the first half with nausea, the second half gave him chills. Is this monitoring mechanism written by Li Yuanying?
This is proposing a royal hawk!
Who doesn’t have some dirty deeds? If such an institution is allowed to exist, His Majesty can confiscate the property of the courtiers he dislikes with a single order. As for evidence? Evidence can always be supplemented. What’s wrong with getting rid of a household? Who can dare claim that they are squeaky clean?
The censor was sweating profusely.
As soon as he saw the regulations, he knew that plan was well written and good enough for swift execution. The more he read, the more frightened he became. He even felt that this was not written by Li Yuanying but by His Majesty. The Emperor wants it himself!
Such a Royal hawk must not appear!
Especially not over a dispute between him and Li Yuanying. Otherwise, he would be hated by all and even go down in history with a bad name. Due to this censor’s groundless impeachment, the lives of all officials in the Tang Dynasty became miserable from then on…
The censor closed the article and held it tightly without intending to return it to His Majesty. The Emperor summoned him alone to show him this so he naturally understood what it meant.
“Your Majesty, I think I was wrong first. We should not be pursue it further. I will apologize to His Royal Highness Prince Teng, and I will definitely make peace with him.”
Li Er did not stop him.
Under the terrible threat of being infamous, the censor implemented the precious spirit of “knowing one’s mistakes and being able to correct them is the greatest”. He found Li Yuanying and sincerely apologized to him, saying that he should not have made groundless accusations.
In the following days, the censor diligently clarified with everyone that there was no conflict between him and Li Yuanying. They were just joking and everything was a misunderstanding.
Facing the contemptuous eyes of others, he secretly thought in his heart: You don’t know they sacrifices I am making! I’m throwing away my integrity, but I’m defending the happiness of all officials!
Relying on such self-hypnosis, the censor returned to his colleagues with his head held high.
