Chapter 405: I Return to a Scene of Carnage (2nd Update)
Priest Wang had no idea about the romantic history of Celestial Master Zhong’s chosen Grandmaster. When he saw the Valley Master personally call out for Ye Wenxin, Priest Wang said even more excitedly, “The Valley Master is calling for you, Grandmaster.”
For a moment, Ye Wenxin considered having Priest Wang impersonate her and handle the situation with the Valley Master. However, Priest Wang’s words caught the Valley Master’s attention.
The Valley Master’s gaze briefly rested on Ye Wenxin for 0.1 seconds before shifting to Xiao Zhang next to her. Smiling, he said to Xiao Zhang, “You must be Miss Ye, correct?”
Xiao Zhang was momentarily taken aback. She smiled at the Valley Master and replied, “I’m not Ye Wenxin. She is.”
Xiao Zhang took a slight step back. Only then did the Valley Master fully notice Ye Wenxin. Their eyes met, and both looked particularly awkward. The Valley Master scrutinized Ye Wenxin, looked her over several times, and finally couldn’t help but ask, “Are you the Wenxin my son spoke of?”
Ye Wenxin responded politely, momentarily recalling a scene from the past, when she had wiped the floor with the previous Valley Master. Unfortunately, that old Valley Master had retired from the Martial World due to her actions. Ye Wenxin never expected that this new Valley Master would have such bad vision, making her regret not having rubbed his father’s nose in it a bit more.
“Answer him, Grandmaster.”
Ye Wenxin’s prolonged silence prompted Priest Wang to speak up. Ye Wenxin snapped back to reality and respectfully made a fist-to-palm gesture towards the Valley Master. “If Big Brother Ling has not met many young ladies named Wenxin, then it should be this junior.”
The Valley Master smiled and said, “With such talent at just fourteen years old, you surpass even men. Haha, my son had made an excellent choice, taking in a gifted disciple like you.”
Ye Wenxin was puzzled, unsure whether the Valley Master was trying to cover for his mistake, or if she had somehow become Ling Jue’s disciple, prompting the Valley Master to come see her for himself.
As if realizing he might have been too enthusiastic, the Valley Master smiled awkwardly and said, “Bring out the pills and distribute them.”
The initially bored crowd brightened up at the mention of Medicine King Valley distributing pills, and were eager to grab some. However, the Medicine King Valley disciples, accustomed to such chaos, quickly organized everyone into an orderly line.
When other immortal sect members heard that the Valley Master had come personally, they also came forward, and everyone engaged in a round of formalities. Ye Wenxin took this opportunity to step away from the crowd and noticed a male disciple dressed in Medicine King Valley robes beckoning to her. He had a mysterious expression, as if he had some secret to discuss with her.
Ye Wenxin immediately recognized that this person was Ling Jue’s confidant. She said her goodbyes to Xiao Zhang and walked over alone.
“Miss Wenxin, Young Master Ling sent me to deliver this letter to you.” The disciple took out an envelope from his bag of holding. Ye Wenxin immediately recognized the handwriting as Ling Jue’s.
Since Ye Wenxin had been traveling recently, this Medicine King Valley disciple had spent quite some time locating her. Once he learned she was in Yangzhou City, he rushed over. He had initially planned to warn Ye Wenxin ahead of time and have her avoid the Valley Master, but it seemed that Ling Jue’s concerns had come to pass.
The letter ended abruptly at this point. Ye Wenxin thanked the disciple and took the letter back to her tent. There, she took out several herbs from her bag of holding, mixed them together, and ground them into a liquid, which she then poured over the letter.
In an instant, the previously missing content reappeared, revealing the follow up regarding this matter.
Ling Jue’s father was very concerned about Ye Wenxin, so Ling Jue had to lie, claiming that Ye Wenxin was an honorary disciple for whom she was providing guidance. However, Ling Jue’s father unexpectedly showed even greater interest. After learning that Ye Wenxin was an advanced alchemist, he became even more eager to recruit her, even considering making her a concubine to strengthen the family line.
Ye Wenxin fumed. Although she knew that the Valley Master was biased towards men, which had led Ling Jue to disguise herself as a man, she hadn’t expected that Ling Jue’s sacrifice wouldn’t change the Valley Master’s mindset but instead make it worse.
Recalling the Valley Master’s actions earlier, she finally understood why the Valley Master noticed Xiao Zhang first. Compared to her, Xiao Zhang seemed more in line with his preferences.
Realizing this, Ye Wenxin felt even more displeased. However, Ling Jue had anticipated her anger, and wrote various comforting words in the letter, advising her not to be impulsive or feel wronged. They were just words, yet Ye Wenxin found herself somewhat soothed, and even ended up smiling as she read the final parts of the letter.
[When the mountain flowers are in full bloom, I will come to marry you.]
These words were written in large characters, and clearly reflected Ling Jue’s ambitious and eager intentions.
“She’s truly dedicated. Unfortunately, who knows if we’ll still be in the same world when that day arrives.” Ye Wenxin toyed with the letter in her hand, folding it into a flower shape. With a gentle pinch, she tore the letter into pieces.
After some thought, Ye Wenxin wrote her own letter. In contrast to Ling Jue’s extravagant message, Ye Wenxin merely wrote a single line:
[All is well. Looking forward to meeting you.]
These few words were written without any special herbal ink, just simple and straightforward. Ye Wenxin didn’t understand those overly sentimental love declarations; she was practical, and only hoped that Ling Jue would focus on her work. As for their agreement, Ye Wenxin felt she would have plenty of time to consider it when the day came.
“Alright, please send this letter out for me.” She handed the letter to the Medicine King Valley disciple. The disciple nodded and quickly disappeared from Ye Wenxin’s view.
Ye Wenxin made sure no one had seen what happened before returning to the tent, where a lively scene awaited her.
Xiao Zhang and Gu Xiangsi were looking at each other, each trying to vie for a place beside Ye Wenxin. Ye Wenxin pretended not to notice and exaggerated a big yawn before going to bed…
The next day, without any incidents with Gu Xiangsi’s buns, Ye Wenxin slept surprisingly well and couldn’t help but praise Long Qingyue’s brilliant planning in her heart.
Starting today, Xiao Zhang accompanied Ye Wenxin constantly. Under Long Qingyue’s orders, Xiao Zhang would stay with Ye Wenxin until the situation in Yangzhou City was resolved.
Xiao Zhang was very tactful and had leadership qualities. In no time, everyone began to call her ‘Sister Zhang’. Xiao Zhang didn’t dare proclaim herself as such, but still earned everyone’s respect and favor.
Thanks to Xiao Zhang’s presence, the day went by smoothly, and Ye Wenxin didn’t even have to think much most of the time. Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Gu Xiangsi, who had lost her source of affection, was filled with grievances. In desperation, she sent a carrier pigeon, begging Jin Xiaoqin to come quickly and deal with Xiao Zhang, this thirty-year-old demoness.
