Chapter 189: The Hero’s Twilight
The clear river water flowed gently over the cracked land, with pebble-paved riverbanks on both sides, and lush trees stood like orderly soldiers guarding the area nearby.
After resting, a group of knights clad in golden armor mounted their warhorses and rode away.
“Stop! There is movement.”
Ahead, Samuel signaled the team to halt, and suddenly a dark cloud appeared in the otherwise clear sky, blocking the sun and casting a large shadow on the ground.
Immediately, a strong and sinister force surged from the distance, causing the grass and trees on the ground to wither, filling the air with a sense of death.
The warhorses neighed restlessly, their hooves trampling wildly, as the knights struggled to control them. They nervously scanned their surroundings when a cold wind swept through, causing the temperature to drop sharply and a chilling sensation to rise from the depths of their hearts.
“You all return to the city first; I have matters to attend to,” Samuel said in a deep voice, his expression somewhat grave.
Behind him were Dante and Locke, both of whom had experienced extraordinary growth in strength and could sense the extremely dangerous aura ahead.
The two exchanged glances, and Dante said, “Grandfather, could it be that the Four Heavenly Kings of the Demon Clan have appeared? I should stay as well; with my strength, I won’t hold you back.”
Samuel sternly replied, “You are the heir of the Empire; there is no need for you to take risks. Return with the team.”
“But you are the pillar of the Empire; you cannot be left alone,” Dante hurriedly insisted.
“I am old now and no longer the pillar of the Empire. With Charles here, the Empire will not fall. You can leave with peace of mind; I can handle this.”
Over the past year, Samuel had been leading the knights to sweep away hidden threats within the Empire, preventing these dangers from disrupting the Empire from within during the impending war with the Demon Clan.
However, to others, he was actually avoiding suspicion. As the former emperor and a renowned hero, even the current emperor Charles did not have as much prestige as he did. To avoid affecting the normal operation of the Empire, he had not set foot in the imperial palace under the pretext of carrying out missions.
“I understand; please be careful,” Dante said after a moment of hesitation, and he and the knights left.
Watching them gradually disappear, Samuel let out a sigh of relief.
Not long after, a young figure emerged from the demonic mist, wearing a sinister smile.
“The Demon King Garfield!”
Samuel’s expression darkened. “I didn’t expect you to dare to appear right after your resurrection. Aren’t you afraid I will slay you again?”
“Can you do it?” The Demon King scoffed, “There is no one else here to help you. It’s time for you, old man, to rest in peace. I have come to send you on your way.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a surge of overwhelming power erupted from the Demon King, causing the winds and clouds to change dramatically. The black and red evil energy intertwined, like lightning darting chaotically through the space.
“You have broken through that class?” Samuel’s expression changed slightly.
“I’m still a bit short, but as long as I kill you, it will be enough,” the Demon King said with a confident smile.
“Hahaha!” Samuel leaped off his warhorse and laughed heartily, “Good! The gods truly do not disappoint me. I, Samuel, should not die in bed; dying in battle is my rightful end.”
A golden might was released from his body, engulfing him in golden flames that scorched the space around him.
The black and golden auras clashed, standing against each other, dividing the world into two parts: gold and black. The powerful forces caused the space to tremble slightly, whipping up a whirlwind that swept through the surroundings, scattering grass and trees and raising clouds of dust.
Samuel let out a muffled groan, forcing himself to take a deep breath, and his aura expanded once more.
Boom!!!
The two charged at each other simultaneously. Samuel’s sword struck the Demon King’s fist, and a blinding light radiated from the point of contact. Following that, a violent semicircular wave of energy erupted, lifting a layer of yellow earth from the ground and leaving a barren patch behind.
Dante was galloping on his horse, a bad premonition rising in his heart, and he immediately stopped. “You all return first; I will go help Grandfather.”
After saying that, he turned his horse around and raced back.
“Prince Dante, we will go with you!”
The knights could not rest easy; their loyalty would not allow them to abandon their lord and leave like this, so they followed closely behind, leaving only Locke, who also chased after them.
“Go!”
Dante felt extremely anxious, his eyes fixed ahead as his warhorse galloped like the wind, racing across the ground.
Boom boom boom!
From a distance, the sounds of explosions could be heard, as violent thunder and lightning, along with scorching flames, engulfed the entire space, and the uncontrollable terrifying power devastated everything around.
Suddenly, the commotion ahead ceased.
Dante’s heart raced, and he quickened his pace again, but his warhorse could not withstand the intense physical strain and was growing increasingly fatigued.
Dante passed through thick smoke and saw a figure in the dense fog ahead.
“Cough cough!”
Samuel knelt on one knee, a massive blood hole appearing on his body, large patches of blood staining the ground. Beside him lay the broken sword of Valuida.
The Demon King stood next to Samuel, his entire arm stained red with blood.
In the next moment, Samuel’s eyes dimmed, and he fell heavily to the ground.
“No!!!”
Dante, who had rushed over, caught sight of this scene, and his pupils dilated, his eyes nearly bursting with rage, as a heart-wrenching sound escaped his throat.
The sorrowful emotions piled up in his heart, with nowhere to vent, transforming into a mournful cry that pierced the sky like an arrow.
Dante rushed forward, sparks flying around him, landing on his skin and causing a sharp pain, as if needles were stabbing his heart. The gray smoke covered the space, bringing a choking sensation, like a large hand tightening around his throat, suffocating him.
“Just in time! I won’t have to search for you anymore.”
The Demon King grinned wickedly as he gradually approached Dante.
Suddenly, he stopped, frowning.
Thump thump thump!
A violent heartbeat echoed, like a great drum resounding through the heavens and earth, deafening like thunder.
A blood moon slowly rose, its bloody light dyeing the earth a deep red. Then, a scarlet lightning bolt fell from the sky, striking Dante.
Dante raised his head, revealing a pair of blood-red eyes that reflected the blood moon in the sky, releasing a terrifying aura.
Behind Dante, a strange scene unfolded, as countless skeletons crawled out from a grave filled with broken swords, a mountain of corpses spread out, and a desolate, withered aura permeated the air.
The Demon King looked on in astonishment, unable to believe what he was seeing.
“Ah!!!”
Dante let out a painful roar, a violent force surging wildly within him, as if his body were being torn apart, releasing a thick blood aura and demonic energy that claimed the space.
A blood-red halo spread, and the heavens and earth resonated with a funeral song, as if mourning, while blood rain fell, and all was silent, bidding farewell to the hero.
“I will kill you!”
A voice filled with extreme hatred erupted from Dante’s mouth, his blood-red gaze locking onto the Demon King, as thick blood flames ignited on his body, shooting up into the sky.
