Chapter 237: Hidden Agendas
After Wu Peiling finished cooking, she saw her husband Yao Chengxuan with a ugly expression. She knew that Yao Chengxuan was upset with Lili and probably also with her. However, it wasn’t that she didn’t want to stop Lili, it’s just that Luo Qiao stopped her from intervening.
After all, Lili was her daughter, she couldn’t just beat her harshly. Moreover, Luo Qiao was quite unyielding today. While Lili was wrong, it wasn’t right to have her sign that receipt in front of so many people.
She didn’t dare to go out this afternoon, feeling like people were gossiping about their family, which left her feeling uncomfortable.
So, when she saw Yao Chengxuan, she didn’t mention what happened in the afternoon. She had already heard him scolding Lili. Lili was indeed at fault, but once she had been reprimanded, it was enough. She couldn’t ignore her daughter’s feelings over someone else’s issues.
She knew well that today’s incident wasn’t Luo Qiao’s fault but it was all Lili’s greed. However, Luo Qiao also acted a little too decisively. After all, the couple had protected her quite a bit over the years.
At night, Yao Chengxuan waited for Wu Peiling to come in and asked, “Why didn’t you stop Lili today?”
Wu Peiling was also irritated, and replied, “I did try to stop her, but Luo Qiao kept insisting I shouldn’t interfere. She said it’s better to settle it now to avoid Lili bringing up the farm issues again in the future.”
Yao Chengxuan looked at his wife and said, “You know well that apart from protecting Luo Qiao a bit, she hardly ate much of our food at the farm. Why did you let Lili act like that?”
Wu Peiling’s eyes reddened, “I did want to take care of it, but Luo Qiao kept holding me back, saying she didn’t want to keep dealing with such things. She said it was better to settle it now. What could I say?”
Yao Chengxuan sighed, “I shouldn’t have asked you like this. But you should know, if we hadn’t been good to Luo Qiao back then, Old Man Yuan wouldn’t have protected us so much.
In truth, Luo Qiao indirectly helped us. The food she brought from the Yuan and Yang families far exceeded the few bowls of wild vegetable porridge we gave her. Lili’s actions today must have hurt Luo Qiao. Go to sleep.”
As Yao Chengxuan lay down with his eyes closed, he thought about how Old Man Yuan and the Yang couple in the capital would view today’s events. People who are old and wise can easily see through such petty schemes.
Early the next morning, Luo Qiao boiled a large pot of tea eggs in her space before heading outside to tend to the backyard vegetables. She harvested all the crops that were ready and stored them in her space warehouse.
There’s one advantage of this courtyard, that is, whether it’s the front or the back, the walls are higher than those of other houses, so whatever she did inside couldn’t be seen by others.
After harvesting some vegetables, she replanted seeds, watered the garden, and didn’t forget to sprinkle water from the space. After tidying up, she drank a bowl of porridge, ate a tea egg, and locked the door securely. She then headed towards the train station.
By the time she arrived, the ticket inspections had already begun. Not far in front of her, a woman was struggling with a large bundle on her back, holding a child in one arm, and with two large bags beside her. She had to stop and rest every few steps.
Luo Qiao stepped forward and said, “Sister, let me help you with your bags.”
The woman gratefully smiled and said, “Thank you so much, I didn’t know what to do.”
Luo Qiao replied, “No problem, let’s go. We shouldn’t delay boarding.”
Because there’s only one train parked on the platform, Luo Qiao picked up the bags and walked forward.
After confirming the woman’s train carriage number, Luo Qiao took her things to her seat. She intended to leave after setting down the bags but noticed that the woman was still holding her child.
So, Luo Qiao helped arrange the bags and then said, “Sister, I’m going ahead. My seat isn’t in this carriage.”
The woman took Luo Qiao’s hand and thanked her repeatedly, explaining that she was traveling with the military. Her husband was supposed to pick her up, but he had an urgent matter and couldn’t make it back.
Also, all the tickets were sold out and she had only learned in the city that her husband didn’t return on the night train as planned but had been called away on a mission. Her family could only send her off on the train, and today she was just changing trains here.
