Chapter 20.1
“Old Xie, you’re really inconsiderate!”
Xu Zhu was furious and wanted to curse.
He had known Xie Yanzhao was a scoundrel, but he didn’t expect him to be this much of one.
Xie Yanzhao ignored him, lighting a cigarette but not smoking it.
“Did Commander Xie call for you?”
Seeing Xie Yanzhao’s demeanor, Xu Zhu knew something was up.
As a brother, he understood him best.
Xie Yanzhao usually didn’t smoke unless he was dealing with troubling people or situations. Since they were on leave and there was nothing to worry about in the military, it must be related to Xie Yanzhao’s family matters.
“He knows about me and Ruan Mingfu,” Xie Yanzhao said, his eyes dark and serious as he looked at Xu Zhu.
Even he, with his thick skin, felt a bit uneasy.
“I… I just mentioned it to the old leader, and I didn’t expect him to remember and spread it around the whole military district…”
Xu Zhu, who had let the information slip, also felt a bit guilty.
“I wasn’t wrong though. Isn’t your relationship with Ruan Mingfu a good thing?”
Xie Yanzhao shot him a glance.
Xu Zhu rubbed his nose. “What did Commander Xie want to say to you?”
“What else?” Xie Yanzhao sighed his expression one of sarcasm. “When he heard about my engagement, some people couldn’t sit still.”
Xu Zhu sighed.
Compared to his brother, Xu Zhu felt like he had grown up in a honeypot.
“Does Commander Xie disapprove of your marriage to Ruan Mingfu?” Xu Zhu frowned. “Will he use his connections to block your marriage report?”
Xie Yanzhao looked scornful. “It’s too late for that.”
Xu Zhu looked at him.
“After he made that call, I immediately submitted the marriage report and even called the old leader personally.”
“Impressive, truly impressive!”
The grievances between Xie Yanzhao and Commander Xie were so extensive they could be talked about for days and nights. Everyone in the military district knew that the father-son relationship was strained. Xie Yanzhao had joined the military at sixteen and had never returned home since.
Xu Zhu didn’t have much sympathy for Commander Xie.
The rift between father and son was largely due to Commander Xie’s own failings.
Xu Zhu felt pity for his brother.
To have such a father…
Xu Zhu suddenly realized.
“Old Xie, you really are something!”
He wondered why their relationship had progressed so quickly. Despite having asked Xie Yanzhao about his feelings before, the scoundrel had just claimed disinterest, yet here he was, deciding to marry her.
It was evidently due to Commander Xie.
“Old Xie, even though your relationship with Commander Xie isn’t good, marriage is a big deal and should be carefully considered. You shouldn’t ruin your life just to spite him.”
Ruan Mingfu had just finished a thorough bath and was feeling great, now a fragrant little fairy again.
However, as she reached the door, she overheard something about ruining one’s life.
Her beautiful brows furrowed as she stood behind the door, eager to hear more.
Outside the door, Xu Zhu, with a tone full of concern, was completely unaware of the trouble he had stirred up. “Old Xie, are you deciding to marry Ruan Mingfu just to spite Commander Xie? That’s not fair to her.”
“What’s unfair about it?” Xie Yanzhao shot him a glance. “She wants to marry, and I just happen to want to marry her. How is that unfair?”
Xu Zhu: “…”
He felt like he was a worrywart by nature.
Xie Yanzhao not getting married made him anxious, and now that Xie Yanzhao was planning to marry, he was even more anxious.
Inside the room, Ruan Mingfu’s pretty face darkened.
That scoundrel! No wonder he so readily agreed to marry her. She had thought he was enchanted by her charm.
How frustrating!
Ruan Mingfu fumed for a while, then had a realization.
That scoundrel agreed to marry her just to defy his father. Wasn’t she just entangling him to escape Zhou Peng’s control?
They were equally matched…
Moreover, that scoundrel had saved her today.
She couldn’t stay angry.
Miss Ruan, however, wasn’t an ordinary person. She insisted on being angry!
The scoundrel was being so unreasonable, not clarifying things earlier and making her conscience suffer for half an hour.
He needed to be taught a lesson.
She opened the door to find two large men standing like sentinels, one on each side of the door.
Having just bathed, Ruan Mingfu was still a bit damp, looking even more beautiful than usual, with her hair dripping wet.
Because she was wearing a loose outfit, perhaps due to needing to sleep, she felt a sense of satisfaction as she saw the amazement in the two men’s eyes. However, she didn’t show it on her face.
Xie Yanzhao stepped forward, blocking Xu Zhu’s view.
Xu Zhu, who was watching this scene, said: “…”
He felt hurt.
People shouldn’t be so childish. Besides, he was married.
He loved his wife dearly!
Who are you insulting?
He was definitely not like Old Xie!
As for the claim of disinterest in Ruan Mingfu?
Tch, men…
…..
Back in the ward, Ruan Mingfu looked at the single bed and asked, “Are you going back tonight?”
It was already dark outside, with a pitch-black window.
“Old Xie will stay here with you,” Xu Zhu spoke first, giving Xie Yanzhao a nudge. “I can leave and bring you some things tomorrow.”
Ruan Mingfu: “…”
With only one bed in the ward, did that mean she and the scoundrel would have to share it tonight?
Who said people were conservative in this era?
“I’m leaving now,” Xu Zhu said, turning to go.
Soon, only the two of them were left in the room.
Ruan Mingfu looked at the only bed. “… Where will you sleep?”
Hospital beds were standard-sized, only slightly wider than a single bed. With Xie Yanzhao’s large frame, she wasn’t sure if he would fit…
Did that mean she would have to lie on top of him?
The thought made Ruan Mingfu’s face even redder.
Though she was tempted by the scoundrel’s double doors, this seemed a bit too fast.
After a while, they managed to move another bed into the room and, after setting it up, enthusiastically addressed Xie Yanzhao.
“Commander Xie, if you need anything, just call us!”
“Yes, Commander Xie, no need to be polite with us…”
Ruan Mingfu watched in a daze.
That scoundrel really knew people everywhere.
Xie Yanzhao efficiently made the bed but noticed Ruan Mingfu watching him intently. He fumbled slightly, clearing his throat. “Still not sleeping?”
“I don’t know how to sleep.”
Xie Yanzhao: “…”
He walked over and inspected the bed, “It’s fine, just sleep.”
Ruan Mingfu’s stubbornness resurfaced.
“I’m not used to hospital bed linens. With so many patients, I’m not sure if the linens have been disinfected. What if the last patient was…”
Just thinking about it made Ruan Mingfu even less willing to lie down.
Xie Yanzhao: “…”
Women really are troublesome.
He pointed to the bed he had made. “The sheets here are all new, go to sleep.”
“Oh,” Ruan Mingfu responded, walking over. “Have these been washed before?”
Xie Yanzhao: “…”
If these were his soldiers, he’d make them train until they dropped!
“They’re all clean. Go to sleep.”
Ruan Mingfu reached out and touched the fabric, it was quite soft. She brought it closer and sniffed it; there was no smell of newly unwrapped plastic, only a faint scent of soapberry.
She was satisfied.
The man didn’t stay long and left with the items. Shortly after, he returned, his body covered in steam.
Ruan Mingfu’s eyes flashed with satisfaction.
Not bad, the man also seemed to be a clean fellow.
