Chapter 9 The First Place in the Mathematical Olympiad
Mu Jinghao watched the two people walking out from here. The girl called Wan Wan had her back to him, so he didn’t notice her appearance at first.
However, when the girl turned and walked away, he finally saw her face clearly. But he felt a sense of familiarity with this girl, as if he had seen her somewhere before.
However, that’s not important. What’s important is that he felt that the arguments he had just thought of to debate with them, after this girl left, he didn’t have the chance to say them anymore. Everything was kept inside him, which made him very unhappy.
The boy next to him saw his friend’s expression and jokingly said, “Alright Jinghao, didn’t you say you had something to discuss with me?”
Mu Jinghao looked at his friend, who was teasing him, still feeling a bit aggrieved, and said indignantly, “Zhichen, it’s not that I’m criticizing you, but why did you choose to come to this Second High School instead of staying at the First High School? Look at the kind of people in this Second High School!” Mu Jinghao looked at his friend who had just returned to the country, puzzled.
“I just thought the Second High School was quiet. Besides, the college entrance examination is in less than two weeks. I feel like it’s the same wherever I am!”
Shen Zhichen had just returned to the country a few days ago. According to his family’s arrangement, he was supposed to stay at the First High School for a while before taking the college entrance examination. However, after spending a few years abroad, he found it difficult to fit in immediately with the circle he used to be familiar with, so he decided to stay at the Second High School for a few days.
Seeing his friend say that, Mu Jinghao stopped trying to persuade him. After all, Shen Zhichen was already at the Second High School, and further persuasion would be useless.
So Mu Jinghao started chatting slowly with Shen Zhichen. After all, the two had been childhood friends, but since middle school, Shen Zhichen had gone abroad. If it weren’t for his family forcing him to return to participate in the college entrance examination, he would probably still be abroad now.
The next day, after Su Xiwan entered the school, she heard the class monitor in the front row say, “Su Xiwan, the math teacher wants you to go to her office!”
Upon hearing this, Su Xiwan neatly put down her school bag, thanked the class monitor, and then walked out of the classroom towards the math teacher’s office.
When Su Xiwan arrived at the office door, she lightly knocked, and heard a voice from inside saying, “Come in!”
Su Xiwan gently pushed open the door and saw the math teacher sitting at her desk, looking focused as if she was grading papers.
“Teacher Zhang, did you call for me?”
After hearing Su Xiwan’s voice, Teacher Zhang slowly raised her head and smiled when she saw Su Xiwan, saying, “Xiwan, you’re here? Come, let me tell you, you’ve brought honor to our school this time!” Teacher Zhang’s eyes were full of admiration and pride.
Teacher Zhang looked at Su Xiwan with a smile. When she noticed Su Xiwan’s puzzled look, she continued, “You got first place in the national Mathematical Olympiad competition you participated in a while ago! Wait, let me get your prize money and certificate for you!”
Saying this, Teacher Zhang took out a winning certificate and a thick stack of cash from the drawer.
“This is your first place award certificate, along with a ten thousand yuan scholarship. Take it, and be careful not to lose it!”
Teacher Zhang was worried that Su Xiwan was carrying so much cash, so she advised Su Xiwan to give it to her family when she got home or to deposit it.
Su Xiwan looked at Teacher Zhang’s caring expression and couldn’t help but thank her with a smile! Just as Su Xiwan was about to say goodbye and leave after receiving the certificate and prize money, Teacher Zhang seemed to suddenly remember something. She exclaimed, then said to Su Xiwan, “Xiwan, don’t leave yet, there’s one more important thing I forgot to tell you!”
Upon hearing Teacher Zhang’s words, Su Xiwan smiled and waited earnestly for what Teacher Zhang had to say next:
“Xiwan, the top three winners of this Mathematical Olympiad competition will receive a guaranteed admission to Peking University. So, would you like to take this opportunity for guaranteed admission?”
Upon hearing Teacher Zhang’s words, Su Xiwan lowered her eyes slightly, considered for a moment, and then told Teacher Zhang her decision.
“Teacher Zhang, I still want to take the college entrance examination!” Su Xiwan’s voice was clear and powerful, revealing her inner determination and confidence.
Su Xiwan knew that even though she could get guaranteed admission to Peking University because of her Mathematical Olympiad competition score, the number of majors she could choose from after entering Peking University as a guaranteed admission student was limited. And she was very confident that she could get into Peking University, so this guaranteed admission quota was really not that useful to her.
Teacher Zhang didn’t feel surprised when she heard Su Xiwan’s choice. She looked at this girl who had always been calm and self-disciplined, and felt a sense of awe in her heart.
“Okay then, I’ll tell the school about your choice. There are only ten days left before the college entrance examination. Teacher hopes you can give it your all then, don’t be like your usual exams!”
Seeing Teacher Zhang’s playful smile when she said the last sentence, Su Xiwan also smiled awkwardly and assured Teacher Zhang that she would definitely do her best before leaving the office.
Here, Teacher Zhang watched Su Xiwan’s leaving figure and couldn’t help but think to herself:
“Look, this year, not only did Second High School produce a national first place in the Mathematical Olympiad, but after the college entrance examination results come out, maybe Su Xiwan will also get the top score or be the runner-up!”
Actually, Teacher Zhang had only taken over the class of Senior Three, Class One, when they were in their third year of high school. At the beginning of the school year, she hadn’t paid much attention to Su Xiwan.
After all, this child was always low-key. Except when she asked Su Xiwan questions, and Su Xiwan would stand up to answer, Teacher Zhang hadn’t really seen her speak more than necessary.
Until the first exam, when Su Xiwan’s exam paper was all correct for the questions she had answered, including the last difficult question, she was the only one in the class who got it right.
On the other hand, there were many simple multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions that Su Xiwan had left blank. When Teacher Zhang saw Su Xiwan’s exam paper, her first reaction was anger.
So she called Su Xiwan into her office and questioned her about why she left those simple questions blank. Teacher Zhang still remembers clearly that there was a hint of sadness in Su Xiwan’s clear eyes, but it quickly returned to a calm expression.
Teacher Zhang remembers very clearly that Su Xiwan looked at her and said,
“Teacher Zhang, I have my reasons. Please don’t ask me why anymore. But I promise you that my math score won’t be too low, and I won’t drag down our class’s average score. Also, I won’t leave any questions blank during the college entrance examination. Please rest assured, Teacher.”
After seeing Su Xiwan say this, Teacher Zhang knew that Su Xiwan was a girl with her own mind. She didn’t know why this child did this, maybe she really had her reasons.
So, with Su Xiwan’s assurance, Teacher Zhang never asked Su Xiwan anything again. At the same time, Teacher Zhang also reviewed Su Xiwan’s scores in other subjects. Just like her math exam paper, all the questions that Su Xiwan had answered on her exam papers were correct, while some simple questions were left blank.
At that time, Teacher Zhang was very curious. Logically speaking, with Su Xiwan’s scores, she shouldn’t be in Second High School. These scores would make her a top student even in First High School.
So, when the Mathematical Olympiad competition came around, Teacher Zhang didn’t hesitate to choose Su Xiwan and two other students to participate. And before the competition, the only requirement Teacher Zhang had for Su Xiwan was: to give it her all!
At that time, Su Xiwan hesitated for a moment before agreeing to Teacher Zhang’s request. However, what Teacher Zhang didn’t know was that during that hesitation, Su Xiwan was silently calculating for herself.
Although people from the Xuanmen cannot calculate for themselves, they can sense the dangers and changes in their daily lives.
Although Su Xiwan hadn’t calculated that she would leave the Su family when the Mathematical Olympiad results came out, she could sense that the Mathematical Olympiad results wouldn’t affect her leaving the Su family, so she agreed to Teacher Zhang’s request.
Su Xiwan had always been puzzled. Other parents would hope that their children would achieve good results in their studies, but Fang Qinghui was different towards her. Since Su Xiwan was in first grade, every time Su Xiwan got good results, she wouldn’t get a good face from Fang Qinghui, but instead, would make her angry.
Therefore, Su Xiwan understood from a young age that Fang Qinghui didn’t like her getting good scores. If she got good scores, not only would she not be praised, but she would also be criticized.
So, since elementary school, Su Xiwan would deliberately get some questions wrong on exams. Later, when she grew up, she felt that it was disrespectful to the questions to deliberately get them wrong, so she started leaving some simple questions blank. No matter what, as long as her scores weren’t outstanding, she wouldn’t be criticized by Fang Qinghui.
