Chapter 22.2
The police had a better reputation than the G Committee.
Auntie Wei wasn’t as confrontational as she was with the G Committee, so her tone was less harsh.
“Exactly…”
“Comrades, you can’t wrongfully accuse good people.”
“Right… if anyone should be arrested, it should be the other person!”
The G Committee members, seeing the police arrive, sighed in relief. They hurriedly slipped away, not daring to stay any longer.
The leader gave a bitter smile.
He didn’t want to come here, but the evidence presented by the Zhou family was irrefutable.
“Comrade Xie, I’m sorry…”
“You did well,” Xie Yanzhao said, patting his shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ll go with you.”
Ruan Mingfu, anxious, tugged at his sleeve and frowned, “No, you can’t go.”
“Right,” Auntie Wei chimed in, “…it’s easy to get in, but hard to get out.”
The police officer on the side: “…”
“We’re only asking Comrade Xie… well, Comrade Xie, to clarify the situation, not to arrest him.”
Ruan Mingfu pressed her lips together, her pretty face hesitating for a few seconds before saying to Xie Yanzhao, “If you’re going, I’m going too.”
If that man leaves, the county hospital won’t be safe. She could handle the first and second waves, but what if the Zhou family sent more people later?
What would she do then?
The Public Security Bureau is different.
The police chief there was a comrade of that man and was clearly on their side. Besides, once they were there, Zhou Dahu would have to think twice before making any moves.
Auntie Wei hurriedly advised, “Girl, don’t be foolish. I know you have feelings for Xiao Xie, but you need to think of yourself.”
Ruan Mingfu: “…”
Where did Auntie Wei get the idea that she and Xie Yanzhao had feelings for each other?
Besides, she was only going to the police station to protect herself.
The police felt a pang of sympathy upon hearing this.
The sister clearly cared deeply for Xie. He hoped to find a wife who would care for him like that.
Xie Yanzhao glanced at Ruan Mingfu and said noncommittally, “Let’s go together.”
The group quickly departed.
Auntie Wei stared at their retreating figures, stunned, “Wait, you’re really going?”
She looked around at the crowd, “…So what are we going to do?”
“Go report Zhou Dahu to the leaders!”
As soon as the words were out, everyone eagerly responded.
Auntie Wei waved her hand, “Alright, let’s go find the leaders.”
The righteous onlookers, no longer concerned about anything else, followed suit.
An elegantly dressed, refined elderly woman at the back of the crowd watched them leave, shook her head, and then entered one of the hospital rooms.
Seeing someone inside reading a newspaper, she gave him a reproachful look.
“I told you to rest properly. Why are you reading the newspaper again?”
Her surname was Lin, with the single name Shu.
Lin Shu was older, with strands of silver in her black hair, which she had neatly arranged and coiled at the back of her head.
“Alright, stop looking,” she quickly poured a glass of water, “All you think about is your damned job, it’s ruining your health.”
While grumbling, she handed the water to him.
The old man took the cup and pointed to an article in the newspaper with a look of appreciation.
“This article is good, the choice of words is precise and it’s smooth to read, unlike other articles that are so full of jargon it’s exhausting,” the old man said with a smile, “This article describes the scenery here.”
If Ruan Mingfu were here, she would definitely recognize that the article the old man praised was her own work.
If Ruan Mingfu knew her article was being praised like this, she would be overjoyed.
“How can you still talk? You ended up in the hospital as soon as you arrived,” Lin Shu glared at the old man. Despite her displeasure, her eyes showed concern.
“Why dwell on these things…” The old man, looking embarrassed, continued, “I see the scenery here is nice. We should take a proper look around soon.”
Recalling the scene just now, Lin Shu spoke sharply.
“The place may be nice, but I don’t know if the people here are.”
“You’re hinting at something,” the old man said, putting down his cup and adjusting his glasses.
Lin Shu deliberately asked, “Didn’t you hear all the commotion outside?”
There was even a gunshot, she was terrified.
The old man coughed lightly, unable to hide his embarrassment.
Lin Shu gave him a fierce look.
She knew that this old man was not someone who would just listen. Even while sick, he still insisted on working.
He never thought about how exhausted she was.
The old man was deeply focused on his work, and since their hospital room was at the back, the noise had lost its sharpness by the time it reached them.
Lin Shu looked at the old man mysteriously, “Do you know who I just saw?”
“Who did you see?”
Her sudden curiosity made the old man put down his newspaper and look at her.
“Guess.”
“I can’t guess,” the old man said, feeling a bit uncomfortable but holding back a cough to avoid worrying his wife, “Don’t keep me in suspense, just tell me.”
Lin Shu didn’t play games and directly revealed, “It was that kid Xie Yanzhao.”
The old man straightened up, “Why is he here? Did he come specially to find me?”
He thought about Xie Yanzhao’s connections and couldn’t figure out the reason for his visit.
“Really such an old fool, still delusional at his age,” Lin Shu recounted what she had seen, “That kid is in some trouble. Do you want to help him?”
The old man was indifferent, “What trouble could that be? If he can’t handle such a minor issue, then all the effort spent on him was for nothing.”
Although he complained, his eyes showed a loving expression.
“Do you know what else I heard?” Lin Shu looked at the old man with expectation and smiled, “That kid has a significant other and is about to get married.”
The old man smiled.
Despite his graying hair, he still retained a hint of his youthful handsomeness.
“Have you seen his partner? What are they like?” The old man grew more excited and then slapped his thigh, “That kid has finally come to his senses. I can finally relax.”
Lin Shu glanced at him, “You haven’t even met that child yet.”
The old man smiled with relief, “You should trust his judgment.”
…..
Xie Yanzhao and Ruan Mingfu arrived at the police station and saw the plump Director approach, looking apologetic.
“Brother, sorry…”
He was also under pressure.
The station was small and chaotic, and it wasn’t very peaceful.
There was also a deputy chief in the station who was promoted by Zhou Dahu and had always been at odds with him. With the evidence Zhou’s family provided and this guy making things difficult… he had no choice.
Xie Yanzhao remained calm, his dark eyes revealing a sense of control.
“I understand.”
Those three words almost brought tears to the director’s eyes.
As they spoke, Ruan Mingfu observed the place.
It seemed to be a converted old building, with a layout of front and back courtyards, and some areas already showing the beginnings of modern design.
As they were about to enter, two people walked out.
Their size rivaled the director’s, though one was thinner and darker.
Zhou Dahu immediately noticed Ruan Mingfu standing next to Xie Yanzhao.
Like a fairy, she stood there with a graceful presence. Her fair skin and the sunlight made her look almost glowing. Zhou Dahu was momentarily dazzled and finally understood why Zhou Peng was so fixated on her.
Ruan Mingfu felt the sticky gaze and looked up to meet Zhou Dahu’s lecherous eyes. She frowned uncomfortably and shot him a sharp glare.
Zhou Dahu, however, was even more excited.
Beautiful women are best when they’re a little spicy; it makes things more thrilling!
Xie Yanzhao stepped forward, shielding Ruan Mingfu completely, his gaze cutting towards Zhou Dahu like a blade.
Zhou Dahu, however, didn’t take Xie Yanzhao seriously.
In his eyes, Xie Yanzhao was just a young kid. Even if he came from the military, he was merely a battalion commander at most.
How could he possibly compete with him?
“Deputy Director Wu, can we arrest him now that he’s here?”
Ruan Mingfu stepped forward and said sternly, “You have no evidence. On what grounds are you arresting people?”
“Who says I have no evidence?” Zhou Dahu seemed to have anticipated her response and looked toward the room.
Ruan Mingfu frowned as she watched an unexpected person slowly walk out.
