Chapter 37
“Ahem.” Wei Jun nudged his wife with his elbow.
Fang Qiuci had already realized she had misspoken, but having been in business for many years, she was quite composed and quickly apologized, “Sorry, I really like Lu Jiu, and I accidentally spoke my mind.”
If Lu Jiu were here, she would surely be impressed by how her boyfriend inherited his mother’s unique way of apologizing.
Although Fang Wenyi had never met Wei Shian in person, she had seen his photos. Based on the descriptions from her younger daughter and Feng Ming, he seemed to be a mature and reserved person.
She didn’t expect his mother to have such a lively personality.
As for Wei Shian’s father, Fang Wenyi’s gaze discreetly scanned his white police uniform and the insignia with olive branches and two four-pointed stars, which was somewhat surprising.
Of course, she was just an ordinary person. As a mother, the character of her future son-in-law was the most important, but if there was also a solid family background, that would be even better.
Her thoughts were racing, but her expression remained calm.
Fang Wenyi first smiled and introduced herself before replying, “Shian is also a good kid. I admire him for getting injured while saving others. My Peony came early to keep him company. I thought the hospital food lacks nutrition, so I had our aunt prepare some. By the way, Peony is my daughter’s nickname.”
She wasn’t trying to be anonymous for doing good, nor was she looking for anything in return. She just hoped that her Peony would be treated well in the future.
Being quite perceptive, Fang Qiuci immediately understood and didn’t feel that the in-laws had any ulterior motives.
To be blunt, if it weren’t for her future daughter-in-law, she wouldn’t bother to extend warmth to a stranger—what’s the point? Her son was the one benefiting.
But it was all just the heart of a caring mother.
So, she warmly linked arms with her future in-laws and smiled, “Wenyi, you’re too kind. I don’t know how to thank you properly.”
Fang Wenyi patted her, “Don’t mention it, it’s all for the kids.”
Hearing this, Fang Qiuci’s heart, which had been tightly knotted, felt a pang of discomfort and sourness. She couldn’t hold back her tears and her eyes reddened, “Yes, it’s all for the kids. My old man was a policeman all his life and often got injured. Once, he was stabbed seven times by a thug and barely survived. At that time, I had just given birth to our second child, so I named him Shian meaning safety and peace. I didn’t expect him to grow up and become a policeman, and this is not his first injury. My heart…”
“Why say all this?” Wei Jun, who was trying to appear friendly, nudged his wife again to avoid scaring off the daughter-in-law.
Fang Wenyi understood and reassured her, “I see that Shian is capable and will be safe and sound.”
Fang Qiuci quickly wiped her eyes, “I’m sorry, Wenyi. I…”
At that moment, the door to the hospital room suddenly opened.
A middle-aged woman, a stranger to them, entered with a basin holding towels. Seeing several people at the door, she frowned, “Who are you looking for?”
Wei Jun leaned in and saw his son lying with his eyes closed on the innermost bed, probably still asleep. He lowered his voice and explained, “Hello, we’re the family of 328.”
The woman realized and immediately became warm and welcoming, “Oh, you’re Officer Wei’s family! Come in, come in.”
Fang Qiuci smiled and asked, “And you are?”
The woman replied, “My husband is in bed 326.”
At this point, Lu Jiu, who had heard the commotion, came out to greet them.
Although she felt quite embarrassed, after several hours of mentally preparing herself, she managed to appear graceful and said, “Uncle, Auntie, you’re here?”
After greeting them, she smiled at her mother and took the food box from her hand, “How come you both came together?”
Fang Wenyi held her daughter’s hand and explained with a smile, “It was a coincidence. We met in the parking lot.”
Lu Jiu understood and said, “Please come in.”
“Come in, come in, right now.” Surprised by her daughter-in-law’s good looks, Fang Qiuci quickly responded.
In her heart, she exclaimed, Wow, the photos from the New Year don’t compare to her real beauty. No wonder she’s called Peony; she’s stunning.
Her son was indeed very fortunate.
With this thought, even when she reached her son’s bedside, her gaze kept drifting to the beautiful woman.
Wei Shian had gotten used to the impact of his girlfriend’s appearance. He asked his father to help raise the bed, and with a respectful attitude, greeted his future mother-in-law, “Hello, Auntie. I’m really sorry to meet you in such an environment for the first time.”
“It’s nothing. Special circumstances call for special treatment. Don’t feel too burdened. We must have woken you up,” Fang Wenyi waved her hand. Noticing his pale lips, she worriedly asked, “How are you feeling? With the anesthesia gone, it must hurt a lot, right?”
Gunshot wounds indeed hurt more. Wei Shian couldn’t sleep and kept his eyes closed to reassure his girlfriend. He didn’t want to cause worry for his future mother-in-law or parents, so he said, “I’m fine. The injury isn’t too severe. I should be able to leave the hospital in a couple of days.”
Fang Wenyi wasn’t quite convinced. Aside from his paleness, she didn’t see much emotion on his face but believed him: “You’ll need to rest well even after you leave the hospital, right?”
“Yes, the department will grant me leave.”
“I heard you sold your house. Will you stay in the dormitory or go home afterward?”
“I’m still considering it.” For the sake of his health, staying at home would be most convenient. The house has a nanny, so food and drink are no problem, but he was reluctant to be separated from his girlfriend for a month or two.
Fang Wenyi, having been young herself, understood Wei Shian’s hesitation: “You must be hungry. How about having some porridge first?”
After more than six hours of surgery, Wei Shian was indeed a bit hungry: “Thank you, Auntie.”
“No need to be so polite.”
Seeing what was happening, Lu Jiu quickly got up and said, “Mom, let me do it.”
“Alright, I had Lu Jiu make some meat porridge. The doctor said Wei Shian needs to eat easily digestible food for the next couple of days and should have smaller, more frequent meals.”
“I understand.” Lu Jiu opened the thermos and poured out a bowl, then handed it to her boyfriend, “I tested it earlier, and the temperature is just right.”
If it were just the two of them, Wei Shian would definitely let his girlfriend feed him, but for now, he decided to hold the bowl himself.
He was good-looking, articulate, and his demeanor was the kind that could only be cultivated in a wealthy family.
To be specific, the high-quality ice jade bracelet on Peony’s hand alone must be worth over a million.
Her son had never mentioned that his girlfriend came from a rich family.
Fang Qiuci, who had been quietly observing, was pleased and somewhat relieved. Given Peony’s outstanding background, she had been a bit anxious before. But seeing how deeply Peony cared for her son, she gradually relaxed and praised her future in-laws even more.
—
Wei Jun couldn’t stay away from work for too long.
After staying at the hospital for only an hour, he planned to head back.
Of course, his wife had to stay; he couldn’t leave their son with his in-laws: “Qiuci, I’ll take you to the hotel to book a room first.”
Wei Shian frowned, “Dad, you and Mom should go back together. I can manage. I have a nurse, colleagues, and Peony taking care of me.”
Fang Wenyi was also surprised, “Stay in a hotel?”
Fang Qiuci gave her son a look and then smiled at her future in-laws, “Yes, although my son looks fine, how can I truly feel at ease? I need to keep an eye on him.”
As a mother herself, Fang Wenyi understood well. However, staying in a hotel was certainly not as convenient as being at home.
Moreover, considering the relationship between the two kids, it was just a matter of proving it. She directly invited them, “Why stay in a hotel? Is it safe for you to be alone? Come stay at my house.”
“Stay at your house? Wouldn’t that be inconvenient?” Although he was eager to marry Peony, he didn’t want to seem too forward. He still had a gift for the in-laws that he hadn’t had a chance to give.
Fang Wenyi dismissed his concerns, “Don’t be shy. Since you and Qiuci have a good rapport, what’s the harm in staying at our place for a few days?”
Indeed, the friendship between the two mothers had turned into a sisterly bond within just an hour.
Even though they were of similar age, Fang Qiuci was only slightly older.
Fang Qiuci hesitated a bit, feeling it might be a bit too much. She looked at her husband and son.
Considering his wife’s safety, Wei Jun finally nodded to Fang Wenyi, “Then we’ll trouble you.”
Knowing that his mother wouldn’t listen to him, Wei Shian could only look at his future mother-in-law, “Auntie, sorry for the trouble.” In his mind, he planned to send a message to his mother later, asking her to go to the dorm and bring all the carefully prepared gifts.
Fang Wenyi waved her hand, half seriously and half jokingly, “It’s nothing. Just make sure you treat Peony well in the future.”
Wei Shian held his girlfriend’s hand, looking serious, “Don’t worry.”
The elders were all amused by his attitude, while Lu Jiu’s cheeks turned red from embarrassment.
It was the first time for her future in-laws to visit her home.
Lu Jiu felt she couldn’t avoid accompanying them.
Seeing the elders stepping out to the door, she whispered, “You should rest for a bit. I’ll settle Auntie in and come back to keep you company.”
Wei Shian, reluctant to see his girlfriend working so hard, kissed her fingertips and said, “No need. Luo Wei and Vice Captain Wei will take turns staying with me.”
“That’s not acceptable. They are them, and I am me. I plan to stay with you tonight.”
Stay with you?
Watching her say this and then turn to leave, Wei Shian was stunned for a while, feeling as if he were suddenly on fire from the inside out.
Luo Wei, who had just entered, looked nervous, “Boss, what’s wrong? I… I’ll call the doctor.”
Wei Shian closed his eyes and gritted his teeth, “…Come back!”
Lu Jiu had no idea that her simple statement had set off such thoughts in her boyfriend’s mind.
After forty minutes, their group arrived at the Lu family villa.
Fang Wenyi greeted Fang Qiuci and Wei Jun with a smile as they carried large and small bags into the house.
As a junior, Lu Jiu followed behind.
Cotton Candy, hearing the commotion, darted out from the living room and jumped straight at its owner.
Lu Jiu was used to its affectionate nature and immediately hugged it.
Fang Qiuci looked at it curiously and asked, “This is… the one Shian brought back, named Cotton Candy?”
Lu Jiu smiled and turned the cat’s face toward her, “Yes, look at its eyes.”
One blue and one green.
Indeed, Fang Qiuci immediately smiled, “It’s really beautiful. I’m sure you’re very fond of it. The old man only reluctantly let it go when you wanted to keep it.”
Lu Jiu?
Didn’t Officer Wei say it was given to her because there were too many pets and they couldn’t take care of them?
